Hello NOOlers and NOOLerettes,

Well, due to insomnia, you have a new feature on NewOrderOnline. Asked by the Italian Mick, you can now subscribe to threads.

You must ask yourself, "what the hell does it do?", well it's quite simple, you will receive a notification by email each time somebody other than you post in that thread, just like the email notification.

However, I have enhanced both features, you will still receive a link, but the message as well, in HTML, formatted the right way... etc.

Of course you can't reply to it via email, but you can read it...

So basically, this allows you to follow a discussion without visiting the website, hence will diminue bandwidth for specific users, and will offer a new service.. this is the first draft of this service, but eventually it might send 1 email a day or 1 email a week instead of sending a mail at each and every reply.

What's the catch you might say?

There is one! If you screwed up and posted a message, it will be sent to those who subscribed before you could edit it, so be aware of that.

So, the feature works like:

  • Beside the Add Reply button of each thread you didn't start, you'll see the Subscribe button
  • You must be logged on to see the button (been lazy, I know)
  • In the Forum Menu, you can access the list of threads you have subscribed to and access them from there, and unsubscribe to them.

So far, there is no way to toggle HTML/Text e-mails, but I presume 99% of the people here can handle HTML email, but I will eventually add that option.

I hope everyone will enjoy this feature, now, if you find any problem with it, let me know...

Now I can go to sleep ;)

nice...but it seems weird that you can't subscribe to threads that you started...I'd think those would be the ones you'd especially want responses for.

Well, you can ;) When you post your thread, you have the "notification" option, it's just the same....

You can't do it afterwards though, unless you edit the first post of your thread I guess...

Do people really want hundreds of e-mails to tell them that Mike has posted saying Blue Monday is shit, or Greg Parkin's been taken up the arse again, and such like ?

When you subscribe to a thread you are powerless to prevent the arsehole minority clogging up the thread with random stuff, a bit like when you subscribe to Ceremony you get -1 posts.

So what? you want a black list feature? :skeptic:

That exists on some system, you filter all posts from specific people, although replies to their post will be available.

Not such a bad idea, if possible. That way, nobody would get to read my shite !

*It's an option. And you can also unsubscribe afterwards. Spotnick, while you're at it, another very useful option would be the one I saw on an Italian forum, the "send to mail" option. You can E Mail the message to yourself, so you can save it on your hard disk. Great to keep important messages. Many thanks for your hard work.

haven't subscribed to anything yet, but I might give it a try. Anyway, the e-mail notification seems to have gone funny. Just got one saying that Murv (currently in yellow) had replied to a thread: the complete message was in bright, eye-hurting YELLOW ! and I've had more like this: in bold, with bigger fonts, they're all different now

He probably didn't include a END QUOTE to his nickname... (ie [ / yellow ] )
