Do you like it or not?

It took me forever to put it up, so I wanted to know what people think of it before putting the same skin to each and every page of the website.

It might spoil the surprise a little, but since I'm unable to put it online today completly and I tought I would be able to, I prefer to at least put the main page of the website.

Let us know your toughts and what you think about it and if something is wrong on your side.

Forgot to say thanks to those who took a few pictures of what is now and will be on every page ;)

There are currently 70 random pictures, we'll put more, but we need at lease 900 pixels wide to do so...

And hum, forgot to mention that this design is 100% done by WenOrder... not me!

Love it, great feel to it, more energy. At first I though I was at the wrong site, then I was like woh. I like how it more personal, I hope to see more of it. Great job! Maybe you could add a guitar and bass tabs section while your at it?

I thought I was at the wrong site, too! In fact, upon seeing the Monaco album there, I thought I got redirected to Ally's old site!

I do like it though. What's with the inbox and sent messages? It says I have one sent message? :confused2:

Looks great! Took forever to load but we are having a helluva thunderstorm right now.

I love it! wenorder, after seeing some of your sites for other businesses, this design is the best yet :)

i also noticed a message inbox, have not played with it yet, but what is it for/how does it work?

What exactly am I supposed to notice that's different. Looks much the same to. Do I have a dumb computer, or just a 1d10t error?

The front page looks great, I'm sure there are still some things to tweak (like trying to view the profile of the poster in the Latest Posts section). Must've missed the informatin about the blogs though, don't remember seeing anything about them, or the blogs themselves, before today.

what a great intro for a new week!!! really love the front page!!! nice one guys!!! lets alll of us make some picture treatments at this days to get as many as possible pics with over 900 pixels. I can send many pics of Hooky when he was in Thessaloniki for his djing set.

The new homepage I take it. Ok seen it top stuff.

Looks better... Is it possible to have the FAQ /FAC Bar on the home page though?

There's a frontpage?

Very nice! :baby:

I love it. :thumb:

Looks sharp. Spend most of the time on the forum anyway. One gripe is that big section between the page header and the news, could do without that.

It’s a lot better than the old one, that’s for sure. I like it – especially the fact it’s now cantered properly.

Looks good from here-big pat on the back to Wen for all the hard work.

The message center will be enabled shortly, it's actually private messages between members...

Glad to see everybody like it, encourages me to continue... there is obviously something with data gathering on there that I will try to fix, because many people got a server timeout on the page (well, not that many, but still)

Hey, that's not a bad idea, we could have a random FAQ printing over there!

They were advertized a few months ago, but never linked directly, that's why you probably missed it.

The blogs are a little bonus given to the people who have contributed to NOOL...

Oops... I thought I followed the wrong link first... But looks nice.

Nick (& Mike),

Overall a very nice site and so on and so on and so on... :)

You know my general opinion of the new design - I'll live with it.

Here are a few comments from the "alternative" browsers$)A!'' point-of-view:

Firefox 1.0.4 (WinXP):

  • Looks very nice. The menu is not very obvious, but maybe it shouldn't be that anyway.
  • The main "heading"-font (graphic) is not competing well with the fat Arial-font. I think the "heading"-font should be bigger and/or bolder, alternatively making the fat Arial-font smaller.

Opera 7.54 (WinXP):

  • Generally see above.
  • The "Past Updates" headings (e.g., "RAM's new web site is up" and the "Read More" in the Blog entries are very big (14-16 points?) non-fat, non-italic. underlined Arial-font. Not at all the way it appears in Firefox.
  • The menu is not good at all. Same font as in the "Past Updates" headings, plus the font color is dark-blue for non-visited links and purple-red for visited links - probably the default colors in my browser. They lit up nice though when hoovering.

Overall, just minor CSS tweaking.

Good job. /TLV

As my Spanish-speaking friends might say, "muy bien!" :thumb:

I have to say, it was disconcerting for the first few seconds (thought I was on the wrong page), but I like it, it's more "alive" than the previous design. Top-notch job, whoever all was involved!

LOL!

I Didn't even know nic made the front page live yet!!!! Well it's just the first step of a major redesign to the site. I appreciate the comments and many thanks to nic for letting me do another site redesing :)

TLV, I'm testing it in FireFox and Mike on Mac, you're expecting me to install Opera now? ;)

It actually looks better in FireFox IMHO.

Looks good:thumb: Takes a while to load though, will each page take so long?

Server is running slow at the moment, so I don't believe it has much to do with the actual page

No, it might be the upgrade of the data library that causes this, because I get a lot of database timeout.

Will try to fix this when I get home... sorry folks!

And how can I forget the pictures. The random pictures are excellent, always interesting to see a new picture everytime. And I love the blue backgorund picture of Hooky raising his hand.

Very nice work indeed, this design can only be seen as a good thing for neworderonline.com. Please don't let the no-goers persuade you to get rid of it, it's bloody great.

You just need to ask Christy :D

Did I ever tell you I (well, my wife) have all Buffy & Angel DVD boxes?

It's a big, it doesn't save the proper value, I'll fix it when I'll put online the new version of the options/profile, which will be a lot better.

BTW, I just posted the forum index.. everybody is lucky that my home office is the only place with air conditionning in the house... it's so hot and wet in Quebec right now that it's unlivable... 80% humity and 30+ degrees, argh :(

Sorry, but have to say that the forum index looks shit at the moment in this new design. Too cluttered, too much going on around the sides of the page.

The Artwork is nice. But it's not user friendly, because the user has to scroll, if he has a resolution of 1024 x 768 and smaller. These are these days about 75% of the Internet Users after the statistics of my website.

Looks good at first glance, a bit cluttered, but I love the picture banner. Like before, no doubt I'll get used to it and forget what it looked previously. One thing: can you change the line that reads 'if this is your visit to ....' it looks silly without the word 'first'. other than that, keep up the good work.

I knew you didn't like it too much, but "shit" is maybe pushing it a little? :skeptic:

I just checked it at 1024x768 (I'm usually at 1280x1024), and I don't feel it's too cluttered or anything else

Maybe I just don't get what you mean by "too much going on around the sides of the page"... which resolution are you Tim?

If you go into http://www.neworderonline.com/Forums/ at 1024x768, the left hand menu dominates the page and squeezes the forum bits up too much. The compression ruins the font and makes it look amateurish.

As far as I know, we have been given some kind of official status by the band... except they want us to be indie! ie not forced by Warner to do things we don't want to.

We just need to have better communications now... it's not natural for them to send us information... I hope we'll get there someday!

Yepp, looks good in Firefox. In Opera it seems as if "non-standard" characters (like the ones with ASCII-code > 127, e.g., å ä ö ´ etc.) are displayed in a weird way. I'll try to copy/paste:

From CuanaD's signature. Firefox: Steve: "...sometimes we will be writing and I$)A!/ll say; !.we can!/t do that!-It sounds too much like New Order!/ we can end up writing an old song! !0Stop...this was on Low-Life!1. !0Oh yeah!1!/

Opera: Steve: "...sometimes we will be writing and I’ll say; ‘we can’t do that…It sounds too much like New Order’ we can end up writing an old song! “Stop...this was on Low-Life”. “Oh yeah”’

(Though the characters I see in Opera is mostly a square, â, and |. Unless I go to the Swedish forum of course... :) )

The design is overall very cool, though at 800 x 600 it can be a bit confusing:

  • I don't get the blue Hooky background I can see with higher resoloutions.
  • The logo is better with "order" in a different colour.
  • The random image: wonderful! But a bit too wide. It just moves the site in the lower half of the screen! What about placing a cell with the whole menu on the left (say 20%) and then leaving the other cell for the picture? That way the site is still user friendly and the random image is mantained.
  • Yes we have to scroll a lot on lower resolutions. Is it possible to set proportional widths, rather than absolute values? That way the screen could contain the width at any resolution...
  • Blue bar and darker grey menu: very good! This makes these areas more evident.
  • Past updates menu: here there's a little problem because the items are not separated enough. You could put bullets or alternate the colours of each item.
  • I love the Saville colour code at the heigth of the menu with black background.
  • The forum main page is alright, I'd just change the background colour of the personal box with avatar and stats. Also the Mamber Centre column is very useful in the main page, but I hope it won't be repeated on each page of the forum because the pages with the messages would look a bit cluttered... Some things to be revised, but congratulations for the hard work and the wonderful results. :thumb:

There use to be an option for you guys to upload your avatar to NOOL's server, but because of the heavy traffic all around, that was one of the features that was taken off. We are on a dedicated server now, so let see what nic has to say about that.

Ok, maybe you'll notice that the thread list is now uploaded...

Don't hesitate to comment, I already think there should be a separator for the "recent headlines" because they all look too grouped together..

But what else?

Not feeling the new look to the forums. I haven't sifted through all the feedback posts, but I can't seem to get to the previous page containing older threads. All I see is the first page.

The thread list page looks too crowded, with the left-hand side bar taking space away from the actual thread list.

Trust me, it's not LONGER, it's just less wider.

Seems packed maybe, but I feel the right bar will allow people to navigate... too many people on here go directly to the forum.

However, WenOrder *IS* monitoring your comments... I wasn't too sure last night that I liked it when I finished doing it, seems to be missing something, but it's looking nice though.

Yes, Nic, after I made my comment I realized that more width on the actual list wouldn't make it shorter.

looks great, main pages render a bit narrow down the middle in firefox, but not in a way that adversely affects the site.

Stop using f*in Windows Server 2003 Microsoft-IIS/6.0 I'm going to die one day and some moron stistician will work out how much of my life I spent waiting on this bloody site, retyping posts (yes, I'm getting better at remembering to clipboard my more verbose rants), and reading GIBBERISH IIS error pages, that ultimately say "arrrrggggh more than 6 people asked to to do something and I went poo poo in my pants"

I know what your gonna say tho, the whole thing's so deeply embroiled and entwined with FOOKING FP extensions and ASP and activeX and all that other bilge, that NO amount of lobotomizing will allow this site to work on apache without a total ground up recode, and no one expects you to do that, so we're boned. It's a shame really, cos you;ve done a great job on the place, it's become SO successful, that poor old "100 connections limit losedos" can't hack the pace, and there is really is jack you can do about it unless we all stump up for 10 identical servers, and a load balancer.

Of course, one advantage of IIS is that every time the winserver shites itself and reboots, if yer lucky, the site workds really well when it comes back online before everyone realizes it;s back.

you can't force fit them, or script them to the right size ?( I dunno what the windows equiv of imagemagick is, but a simple script to munch all incomming files to standard size ( and damn the aspect ratio) should be easy enough whatever it is.)

I'm testing it with FireFox, and it does look great in it, so I don't see what's so narrow? :confused2:

I can't script the images from outside of here, can't predict the size if it's not hosted here... well, maybe it can, but it would be client script size mostly.

Like I say it COULD be my zoom settings, which are disaggreeing with something you've specified. Which is why I really should try to remember my password and use opera....cos it zooms properly (note to firefox evangelists:fuck off!, no really save your lies, I've used em all, and opera, closed and evil tho it is, works best too as long as you don't ask it to render TOO much ie quality code) only browser I ever seen that can do it....and so fast too.

As for image crushin, I suppose I was hoping for a little too much for a serverside image control lib for DOS. Short of bolting The_gimp into your IIS setup, I don't see it being easy.

Anyway, FWIW, the images look fine here.

I'll take a screener of the narrowness if you like, I'm sure it's down to me pushing text size up, but the frames or tables or whatever the hell, being defined in such a way as to stop them expanding with the text.

Oh it also renders just GORGEOUSLY in Konqueror with my over-riding "ceremony-esque" CSS.

The new design looks good, but it is not very functional. Reading the forum is quite painful because 50% of the screen is "wasted" with design elements and unnecessary information. The actual forum screen is narrowed to 50% of the screen. Reading is not that much fun anymore...

I agree that at least the extreme right and left margins are totally wasted space.

SO I'm not the only one with a sliver of forum and a lot of nice blue stuff then? Feel better now. Oddly, considering the "fluff and eye candy" factor has gone up, I'd SWEAR the site is running better.

PS, see when you;re doing the post page.....remove the "if username=stevcampbell;timeout=14.3seconds" line please :)

Even thogh you may receive a petition to the contrary.

Not all the information is useless information. When coming up with the design, we took in consideration a few things. Most people do not visit the homepage and goes directly to the forums, So we the decision was made to integrate a few elements from the home page in the forums. Second was creating space to fit in advertisements, which is necessary to do now, because it helps the site out. Then I guess you can say some of the rest might be filler, But the space is there for use to do some other add ons in the future with out doing another redesign.

I do see your point that reading the actual thread pages might be a bit cramped. Maybe we can consider removing the left table for those pages and leave it there for the forum index pages.

We knew that doing this drastic design would please some people and might irratate some people, so this is very helpful getting everyones feedback.

When you get down this far on the page, a very large fraction of the total space from left to right is blank.

That's because you have a screen resolution higher than 1024x768 Patrick...

I too have 1280x1024, but we asked people's resolution before doing the redesign and it was quite unanimous that most people were at 1024x768, so we optimised the design for that...

It might need to scroll more, but it's not that bad... is it?

I'm afraid I have no idea what my screen resolution is, Nic. But surely the phenomenon of large blank spaces at right and left will occur at some point when you scroll down, regardless of screen resolution? It's not so bad, no, and I recognize that the portion of the screen where ads appear serves a necessary function. It's really the blank spaces at the extreme right and left that seem unnecessary.

If you are on a PC, then press print screen. It'll save to your clipboard. open a graphics program. Paint on windows is fine. Paste and save.

Mac you press shift, apple, 3. a file saves to your desktop, and you can send that file.

Actually it is seriously bad, because reading the forum becomes a pain in the eye when the actual text is narrowed to 50% of the screen, and a text line contains very little text... Not much fun anymore...

If you can open Word files on your mac, it's easier to ask them to paste into Word ;)

Hi Andy,

I got your screenshot. What your are looking at is the site with your screen setting set to an high resolution. So what look like wasted space to you fits just right for people who has lower resolution than you.

The biggest change on NOOL is going from an expandable table where the forums stretches to fit your screen res to a Fixed table. As I mentioned in my earlier post. Taking out the left table is a consideration so we can possibly increase the area to view the posts.

In other words... the "wasted space" is what most people DON'T see, that's the extra screen space YOU have versus the average user of NOOL...

only thing that confused me at first was the poll icon. i thought it was a mini staircase.

As wementioned previously, we did a poll to get a feel of the average screen resolution, and the most popular choice was 1024x768. Myself, my scressn resolution is over 1900 pixels wide, so the space on the left and right is huge. There is also a lot of people still using 800 x 600 resolution, so they probably won't see the extra space.

We Did put a lot of thought about trying to make everyone happy, but that is tough to do.

Like we said, we read the feedback and take everything in consideration. Nic has been working hard to make this happen.

Andy, you make it clear that you don't like the new set up. We appreciate the feedback, but I dunno if your last comment was a small jab a nic's comment about the average user or I'm just misinterpreting it.

Sorry, maybe I just misinterpreted Nic's comment as a friendly way to tell me to get lost with my opinion about the new design. But that certainly was not his intention. Neither was my intention to bitch around about the new design. So let's be friends again, okay? And Mike, the problem is not, that I don't like the new design, it's just that I can't use it anymore, reading the forum is really no more fun... And now I promise to say nothing more about this issue.

I agree with this. It´s a scary forum. Too much dark colours.

Suggestion: take the colours of the last cd as basic colours. At the moment that is white and orange, perfect!

Gentoo (which can a take a LONG time to install tho it;s not actually HARD to do a such, it compiles everything from scratch for you, so although it takes ages, the system zings and the package manager for installing other software is so easy I thougt they were joking), the window manager is windowmaker.

Not the prettiest desktop on earth, but I like it cos it's very light, doesn't mind running 2 seperate screens at a time (some of the better desktop environments like KDE, try to get involved in the whole dual head thing which I'd rather do without), and can handle 2 or 3 diffent people using it at once, IE, two or more independent logins each with their own 2 desktops. Try that crap with KDe and you'll run out of ram.

The looks are not helped by my preferring to have light text on a dark background, which limits theme choice in thigs like Opera.....not a bad colour match tho between opera theme and the default desktop colours firefox is using.

There's a pic of Konqueror's version up there now too.....I have it set to my "fairlight" colour scheme, possibly also using the ceremony font (if it's oinstalled I'm using it, I just can't remember if I installed it on Linux). I usually try to set up a user theme or CSS on most browsers, but some website will always over-ride it and I get dark text on a dark page. The new version of Konq, caches the page, then hacks the CSS into it somehow....never been overridden yet.

What firefox is doing then is the "expected behaviour", OK-sie....but Opera seems to have worked out what your up to and ignored it, instead rendering it as is, THEN applying it's page zoomer, which apparently has enough smarts to shrink your borders....mad one eh?

Anyway, I assume you used fixed width for a good reason as opposed to "cos you could" and the place does look great. I just use opera for it now not FF.....ahhh dontcha just love freedom of choice.

BTW, regarding slowness (which seems to be response times rather than transfers) IS NOOL hosted on a real server or is it on a virtual server on one machine with 50 others? My bro, a dab hand at this stuff, says he reckons the site will run as is on a suitably altered Apache. Peronally I think he's lying and tranferring to a better server platform would mean a lot of unwelcome work for you.

Remember...even MS use apache when they can, avoiding IIS like the plague.

It's hosted on a real server, all by itself.

And no, I won't change to anything else than IIS, don't even try ;)

The reason why it's slow is because of the statistics calculation routine going on in the morning here (before, it was jamming the site completly, now it's just slow)

And also because the server doesn't have lot of memory for a web server running Windows 2003...

Eventually, when the band's help will be available, we might get a better machine than this celeron server, but this is, however, wonderful to have.

 I'm not getting many errors since NOOL got its own server anyway. Well, the new forum is not bad, a bit darker than the previous maybe (background and icons, though these are definitely clearer now...). I'd just like to have the bar on the right because I have to scroll on the right every time I open a page to be able to read the whole messages. Also I don't like the small Arial font, universally known as the most boring font on the planet. Verdana was much, much more pleasant.

If you're on Windows, you can right click on the desktop background and check the options... there's certainly a tab (in English should be "settings", "options" or something similar) with your resolution. You can also choose to keep an icon in the system tray to easier check your resolution and colur. About the graphic program, you certainly have MSPAINT.EXE, you just have to find it with the search feature in the Start menu. Once you have opened it you can click Printscreen on your keyboard and paste it on Paint, then save it as .jpg It's easier to do than to write, really.

Uhm, couldn't you browse on a lower resolution with normal font size? I think this site should be judged at 1024 x 768 with 100% text size (not 150). I still think it should be able to be correctly viewed at 800 x 600 (replacing absolute widths wuth proportional ones would help, even for higher resolutions), but I admit that the fact I have to scroll horizontally it's just because I have a low res...

I take it that's basically down to the potential hideous workload as opposed to any strange beliefs about apache. I can tell this place uses a lot of MS-ie crp, and for a nice change, uses it well.

What time was that stats routine running before....this site seemed to die in the mid morning UK time for a while, yet there never seemed to be anyone around. I take it the server is remote, at an ISP or server farm? If it were at home, you could add a real junker 486 running some crappy floppy linux distro to do the stats? Perhaps the hosting firm can do that crap for you? Unless of course you mean internal things, like the forums ( how many times certain people have posted nasty threads bout BM, that sort of thing).

Come to think of it, if the machine has too little RAM, apache might not be a great thing on it anyway, linux likes ram, lots of it, not wasteful, just fookin greedy.

Surely we can all chuck a few quid together for a better server. When you says "band's help" you mean them right? not bleedin AOL-time-warner. A back hander from Hooky is cool, getting bought out by "da man" aint so hot :)

I don't know... I've read somewhere the ideal text width on a page is 40 to 60%, because if the text lines are as large as the screen they become annoying, the eye gets tired of reading sooner than if changing line more often. Also the text is not very little because it's true that small Arial is ugly as hell, but it's also true it can contain more words in the same space than Verdana. I think the text ratio is about the same as before... also I remember in the old forum the text was about 50% wide too, the difference was just we had the author+avatar column, the text column, and then a white blank column, while now we have the menu column, the author+avatar one and then the text one, though you get two extra columns on higher resolutions...

Doesn't work that way... I'm renting the server which is somewhere in the USA...

I have a Value Server from APlus, which costs something like 80$/month for a Windows 2003 box (50$ for the basic unix box) click the link and you'll see the configurations they offer.

For the moment, it's sufficient, but eventually, if I can find people to host and have some feedback from the management (one day they'll stop touring!), we might even get something better.

Unless, of course, the activity goes down, which is kind of predictable though... it should get back to normal until the next album pretty soon...
