how long does it take to download these? i've tried downloading shug's glasto DVD and some other things and it's been 20 minutes now and nothing's been downloaded yet.

it can take a wee while for them to start, but 20 mins is pushing it. What torrent client you using? Is it showing seeds and peers for the torrent?

One potential problem is firewalls. BT needs one end of the connetion open. That is to say that if you're torrent ports are closed, you can only connect to people who have them open. People cannot connect to one another if both have their ports closed as neither can initiate the connection.

If you have one of those windows so called "firewalls", just say OK when it asks if your client can be a server.

As for how long....well it's 4GBish, so it'll take however long that would usually take on your connection, provided there are enough seeds to provide that much data.

Because i only have dial-up my BitTorrent is saying it will take 14 days!!! I'll leave it going over night and see how it goes.

You have a point, but i'm new to the world of BiTorrents. The highest i've ever downloaded before is 95MB and that took two or three days. By the way, i still listen to the three remixes of Crystal you did all those years ago.

That was I was thinkin as regards posting DVD images. a 700mb avi woula have done the trick. I can only assume it's a dvd cos you windows unfortunates still have a horrible time making your own from avi's?

Anyway, BT's still the best way, saves Nool paying the bandwidth bill for 100 downloads of 4GB, and never knock a 56k modem, they have a nice way of keeping torrents going on busy sites.

ok, now it seems to be downloading. says it's going to take 4 days. are we back in the days of commodore computers?

Remain calm. I think you will need azurues, because it seems this torrent is running "distributed tracking" more often than not, and I am not sure if anything other than azureus supports that. Don't worry bout what it means, just OBEY! :) Seeds: people who have the whole file and who are therefor uploading onlu. Peer: someone who has part of the file and is both uploading and downloading. you may also see the word "leech" used synonymously with Peer, it's not quite true.....a leech is someone who downloads loads and uploads sod all.

If you use a real firewall you'll need to open some ports on it for best performance....UDP port 2234 and a tcp port that eludes me just now. I mention this, beacuase one of those windows "pretend firewalls" like Zonealarm would normally shriek it's nuts off and ask you about any prog that tried to reserve an open port.

I've never seen the win32 of bittorrent itself, I run that in a linux console when I want to use it, so I dunno what it's capable of, but azureus is simillar enough in windows, that I know it'll make life easier for you.

Torrenting is the way forward, son't give up. There's so much torrent trade in TV shows these days that the BBC and others are talking about using it as the best way to distribute the stuff :)

You may want to check out my posting in the main forum. I use Azureus and tried to point out the main things to think about regarding torrents. No how-to details though...

what in god's name is azurues?

I have a complete lack of knowledge when it comes to torrents. What is the quality of the received file? For example if a DVD is copied and passed around, done properly there should be no loss of quality on copying. If a torrent file is downloaded and a DVD is burned from this, what is the comparable quality?

My main point is that if the resulting DVD is of a lesser quality than the weeded version then one of the reasons behind weeding is lost?

this torrent thing sucks. i mean it really sucks. so far i've managed to download 0% of the glasto DVD and i can't figure this damn thing out. even if it did work, i'm not waiting eight days to download something that would take me 2 hours to download on limewire in DVD quality.

i'm throwing in the towel.

I use Shareaza and it's great. The problem exists to everyone. I have 600Kbps ADSL and even so it takes a long time to download a file because SOME @%@#$%@# LIMITS UPLOADS TO 1Kb/s, 5Kb/s.

So, it sucks.

when i try to open shug's glasto DVD, it asks me to 'open a save path' or something. what do i do? when i choose one (although i have no idea which to save it under) it simply kicks me back to the torrent download site with no glasto to be found. then i click on it again and...same thing. even though it's on my desktop.

now it's no longer even under 'my torrents' but under 'seeding rank.' what?

as far as torrent being 'the way of the future,' when we live in a world where people are leaving dial-up in droves for broadband because of the speed, how can something that takes 2-4 days to download be the future for anything?

as far as torrent being 'the way of the future,' when we live in a world where people are leaving dial-up in droves for broadband because of the speed, how can something that takes 2-4 days to download be the future for anything?

If you choose to use Azuerus, go with the latest version (2.3.0.4). Download and install. Before you start downloading any torrents, perform a NAT/Firewall test (under Tools). You want to check to make sure that port 6881 is ok to use for torrents. If the test gives you an Ok - excellent, move on to download a torrent-file. If you do not pass the test, you have to setup port forwarding for your firewall and/or router. The port to forward is 6881. There are a lot of tutorials on the web on how to set it up.

So, you pass the NAT/Firewall test. Excellent. Go to Tools/Configuration Wizard and follow the instructions. Go to Tools/Options/Files and check the box next to "Save to default data directory", and then specify a folder where you want the files saved (and make sure you have the space there).

If you want to you can tweak the up/download-speeds. I have a 512k DSL connection and I specify 40KB as max upload and 0 (ie. unlimited) as max download. If surfing gets slow, I temporarily set max download to a value between 10-40KB. Press save. (All this is found under Tools/Options/Transfer.)

Now, download a torrent-file of your choice, e.g., the DVD one. Click on the folder-icon with a lock on it. Select the torrent-file and the files are created under the folder specified earlier. If you passed the test in the beginning, you should now start to download something after 1-5 minutes. Right-click on the torrent and select "Show Details", there you can see download statistics and other "fun" stuff.

It may take a while to get torrents to work on your computer, and you may not (and don't have to) understand the technical details behind the technology - but believe me, torrent is a very, very efficient way to distribute large files to many users. Much better than previous P2P techniques.

thanks for your help, but i've tried all of this to no avail. i still can't get the DVD to open anywhere and i have no idea how to burn it when it's in so many pieces. azuerus still can't even find the completed DVD for me anyway, so...i'll stick to my speedy and easy P2P!

Bit Torrents are just a nightmare...

If its not configuring your firewall its having to build up this share thingy so you get faster download speeds.

It really requires immense patience and a bit of technical knowledge if you are stuck behind an encrypted firewall

This is strange - turned it on again this morning after having downloaded quite a lot already in the recent torrent, and the message I get is 'Connection Refused'.

Anything wrong?
