Called "cries and whispers" on "substance 1987", but has nothing to do with that song. Has anybody heard it, and what do you think of it?

Sorry about the delay - I've been working when I should be online!
Back in the eighties (83-85) I had an old wreck of an acustic guitar with only the 2 bass strings left (if you tried 2 tune in any more strings it warped the neck!). The one thing I could play on it was the bass line from MESH. Even now when i pick up a guitar the first thing I do is see how it sounds for Mesh! Always was a quality song, good for tenagers when you dont feel at one with the world - like most of the JD & early NO stuff.

Ok, I shall comment. It sounds like a band who didn't really know what they wanted to sound like. Too many of those early songs are a band trying to find their feet again, thankfully they decided not to persevere with this one after early 1981.

Opens with Hooky, always a good sign. Also when that eerie synth kicks in halfway during it.
The guitar work, sounds like Barney was watching some spaghetti Westerns the night before he recorded this
Nothing impressive. You still can't tell where the band was going, Barney undersings it, but maybe that was a good thing.

I really dig Mesh. It's nothing brilliant, but it grows on you. I love the bassline, but Steve's beat is great. The two work so well together. The chaos of the guitarwork, layered over the consistent and pulsating beat, is awesome.

It's on the B-sides of the tape version of Substance. It was one of the first albums I bought back in 1987. It has the line 'We made a contract in a field of snow.' For some reason I always remember that line. It's not a bad song.

Hey! I have tried several times but am trying again right now. It's definitely not a problem wiht my original file; something went wrong during the sending process. I am trying again as I type this - hopefully it will work!

For the sake of the proper rarity that is Mesh, my two cents' worth.
1] Best bit about it: Steve's drumming is ace. Gillian's synths are just beautiful. Hooky's bass is addicting. And Barney's vocals and guitar work is superb.
2] Worst bit about it: It's too damn short! 
Three minutes too short!!
3] Why I love it: Possibly one of the most unique songs that I have ever heard. Just a beautiful, haunting, amazing song.
4] Percentage rating: For the first time since TPK, 100%.

Although if you google "Cries And Whispers lyrics" you get the lyrics to Mesh

This is one of the few NO song I don't have, because it's not on any American release. I used to thnk I have it, then I found out it was really Cries and Whispers.

Wiki lists the version of Hurt as 8:03. How different is that version from the one on Substance?

Unfortunately, no. :( As far as I know, it's not available on any American release. I tried buying it on itunes, and a few of the online stores that sell mp3's via Windows Media Player, and none of them offered Mesh. Well, one offered "Mesh (aka Cries and Whispers)" as if they're the same bloody song, but upon listening to the 30 second clip, it was indeed Cries and Whispers.

The original US release of 1981-1982 EP vinyl had the true "Mesh" (I think so unless I'm totally confused, and also was the first US release of any New Order). But that was probably before some of you were born. The vinyl was dark purple.
Hooky's bass goes "dooo, dooo, dooo, doo-doo-doo-doo, dooo, dooo, dooo, doo-doo-doo-doo..."
