TURN THE HEATER ON

OK peeps, let's have a trawl through New Order's other reggae cover. Available only on the 2nd Peel session recording, this was a cover of a track from Keith Hudson's "Torch of Freedom" 1975 LP. A personal favourite of mine, what y'all think?

No comment! Think it fits in with them "Finding their feet" phase although I cant imagine them doing a whole album of reggae covers ala UB40.

I do find it a strangely interesting track though, you've got to admit that it stands out in their recorded output! ISTR that the peels sessions ep this came out on was one of my 1st NO purchases and it certainly seemed to be out of place even in their early recordings.

It was recorded as a tribute to Ian, being one of his favourite songs and also a favourite of John Peel's. Sure, they could have done Ultraviolence, The Village or Leave Me Alone instead, as they were all written at the time of this Peel session, but they decided to do something different. Fair play to them. I don't think it was ever supposed to be anything other than something different, a break from the norm.

1. The it was one of the first songs I ever heard by NO...and it was RAW!!

3. I lke that it was so raw...that they had the balls to do it!! I don't really hate anything about ANY NO song...hate is too strong a word for me.

Correct sir. So, you see, they haven't really been 'afraid' of the covers, but why put em on an album when you've got you're own streak of creativity going? But covers are a nice, fun thing to do live....but this is for another forum.

no no no no! New order are crap at reggae.

I'm not sure how much you can look at Sister Ray and Do The Ostrich as covers really, they are little more than a borrowed riff and liberal doses of potty mouth! When I'm With You was a really interesting one though, I cannot understand why they did it only the once, as it worked really well. Vietnam is a one-off for a charity record, and was chosen really because of its position in their past (as a source of inspiration for Love Vigilantes).

I'm glad they don't do covers with any regularity.

I always really liked "Turn the Heater On", a cool track and a very "warm" emotional song, subtle romantic, very unlike the songs that Barney writes, he would never have the guts to write a song like this ever, but the performance is earnest, it doesnt come off as a one-off joke to me... always make me feel warm inside:)

sure, as a reggae song the band is pretty naive and hardly "pros"... but then that has always been part of the appeal of the band to me

Don't know if anyone else had this experice. I couldn't listen to it for a long time. It used to send shivers up my spine. That haunting vocal and synth and then that tune used to get stuck in my head for days on end. I guess that song still scares me a bit.

5. The fact that they need to focus on their own recording is reason enough....apart from live jams at the end of gigs, that's ok though

I really like this, it is the most unusual piece of reggae I've ever heard, loads of cool dub touches. I can imagine Horace Andy singing along to this, it reminds me a bit of some of the Massive Attack stuff on Protection, maybe they heard this and nicked some of the ideas?

I like to listen to this song. Well, it sounds reggae, but FACTORY reggae, which makes a big difference.

I do not know if I am the only one to feel that, but one mix of Blue Monday (remixes from the extra record included with the rest of) sounds reggae too.

( I don't think they did it but i might be wrong ...) PS:is there ( somewhere) a recording of JD playing Luoie Louie ? as they did on an old ( an early) Factory'night ?

I only recently realized what a great cover this. NO playing reggae ! I wonder whose idea this was to cover TTHO at that particular Peel Session.

I love that song! Didn't realize it was a cover version until 2 or 3 years ago

New Order go reggae! It works better than the Vietnam one...

don't forget "i told you so" which has a reggaeton beat... i believe i remember barney saying in an interview that when he was sailing his yacht in the carribean- he could hear the reggaeton/dancehall stylings playing over the radio and this influenced this song... i found the song kinda weak and definately needed a harder beat for it to have worked...

A brilliant cover. When reggae became digitised around this time, it became a weaker force in my mind. The soulful yearnings/dread preachings of Jah fire never sounded all that potent to me in the 80s because of the flimsy bontempi backing( generalisation I know, Yellowman fans). New Order's cool, glacial and detached sound for this song should have been seen as a direction to follow; I love the synth sound, punctuated by the subtle guitar riffs and I think Barney's singing is judged perfectly. This was at a time when he still seemed to understand restraint and didn't feel the need to rock out and emote. In short, better than anything on the last 2 Lps.

TTHO " monte un peu le chauffage" A famous'Ian'favourite song by Keith Hudson. I don't think i've ever heard the Keith Hudson'version, yet. I only know this cover which is one of the best NO 'covers. Sister Ray or AITUK are not very satisfying if we consider their musical "traitement"...- the musical aspects.... The way the band played these both songs is more funny than anything else. Things are obviously different with this one. There's something deep with the song, a real approach. I've never really heard ( seriously) their Sparks cover, when i'm with u, that they used to play in early eighties. I think i've the song, somewhere on an old bootleg - maybe live in Bologna ??? i don't remember. It was one of the first signs of their interest in dance music. Thought i was listening to TTHO the other night (shuffle on mp3 player) turned out to be a the BM remix you speak of!

just dug the vinyl version out,,sounds prety good.years since ive played it

its ace - sounds really raw and wrong but I love it

I like this song but unfortunatelly exists only on the Peel Sessions of New Order ....

I actually enjoy this song, and it once again shows the diversity of NO.
