3. I just love it - love the way it tells a story, love the tune, love Barneys singing on it

It's one of my favourite songs of all time - the original version that is (not the crappy Best Of edit), although the Arthur Baker 5.05 mins remix in the cut-out box that was issued in 1995 is also a good version.

Just love the song. It's extremely moving, and the end part - near the fade - gives me goosebumps in a way The Perfect Kiss and Bizarre Love Triangle before it did.

So 98% then.

One of my all time faves: 1/ Best bit- The intro, i love the drums and the synth line is one of the most haunting melodies i've ever heard. The lyrics are some of barneys best as well. 2/ Worst bit- the fact that it has to end! 3/ It's one of those songs that stays with you, the lyrics make you ponder hidden meanings, and the music is perfect 4/ A very respectable 95%

I love 1963, everything about it is wonderful! To me it is a sad story with a lot of different meanings to it! I have always thought that in a way it was a tribute to Ian Curtis( I think it hidden in the lyrics.) I think the song is about losing his friend and maybe even a love in his life. I could be wrong, but that is my interpretation. :D

Beautifully written, wonderful music and Barney's beautiful vocals and adorable self.....what more could you ask for?!?!

This is one of those weird ones that I really disliked with a passion when I first heard it (still don't like the other side "True Faith" much even to this day - how's that for treading on toes??!!), but for some strange reason it's really grown on me over the years. If anything the rerelease of it in 1995 was even better - the one Arthur Baker did and made more "guitary". So, here's the breakdown:

1. The ending where Barney is almost pleading to his assailant, it's quite moving actually...
2. Not enough Hooky's bass (even on the 95 version)
3. Like I said it grew on me over time and it's one of those narrative New Order lyrics (like All Day Long) that you either love or hate.
4. 75%
5. Most expensive thing I ever own....... other than my three prized Lamborghini/Vespa scooters, my daughter Gemmy....of course!

just realised i was doing true faith & not 1963! d'oh! though 1963 still a top song, possibly my favourite b-side of all time!

I abstain from reviewing 1963 because American history has tainted it for me. Of course, 1963 was the year Kennedy was assassinated...then the song goes on to mention Johnny and the pointing of guns.

I'm not suggesting there's any connection (there pretty obviously isn't, right from the first line), but it does suck that the track carries the baggage of that connotation...kind of like any track about (not by) Elvis...like that godawful "Walking in Memphis." (Note to self: add to Most Hated Songs thread.)

i always thought that this song was very surreal, with the dramatic, almost violent shifts in perspective, but it is ultimately one of the saddest songs i have heard up to this point. the end always gets me choked up when i listen to it.

Middle drum sound reminds me of an angst ridden Spector song from the 60's 80+ Set of Kodak Vanity cameras

Brilliant vocal from Bernard.Great production.Fade out / ending is a back of the neck tingler.Memories of flipping over my brand new 7" of True Faith in July 87 and this awesome track starting up.Also weird for me to listen to as my name is also Johnny.

I have discovered what I think is the next best band in the world next to Coldplay for me. Sorry. I'm a young one at 17. But will someone please please tell me what 1963 is about? This is the most beautiful, haunting, "can't get out of my head" song. Since discovering it 3 months ago. I have been listening to this song at least ONCE a day. HELP!!

On my copy of substance the last minute or so of the song goes a bit funny sort of like high pitched radio sound. Is my copy faulty or is that supposed to happen? The disc is perfect with not a scratch on it.

That's a bit weird. I was going to put something about 1963. Anyway, perhaps one of the best A (True Faith) and B sides ever released. Should have been a classic single on it's own. Apart from the 95 version being a bit shit. But as Royser says the lyrics are great. Barney can do some great stuff when he wants to.

Honestly, as a New Order fan, even I don't exactly know what the song is about. I think you can interpret the song anyway you want to. I know some people (Barney too?) has said that song was about JFK's assasination, but that interpretation doesn't make sense for me. First off, why would he want to kill Jackie? Secondly, JFK's nickname wasn't "Johnny", it was "Jack". Also, if the story is that Bernard's singing from Marilyn's POV and the "Johnny" gave her a "gift" in "January 1963", her "birthday", it wouldn't make sense because Marilyn was dead by January 1963 and her birthday isn't in January. Neither JFK nor Jackie Kennedy were born in January, as well. That's just what I think. I don't really care what others think about this song, and I don't care what Bernard had in mind while writing this song. One thing I know is that it's a beautiful and poignant song that brings me to tears everytime I listen to it.

i agree,they made 1963 '94 short....sucks, the best part was in the ending... but there's 1963 arthur baker mix,its the best version for me.....
