Can somebody tell me about this song? What is it about? I heard it was called 'Thieves Like Us' because it was named after a movie of the same name. But what is the actual song about? Is the song's subject matter based on the story of the movie, or something else?
Also, whats the music video all about? I don't get it..

I love this New Order song! I own it on 12". I think its about love...obviously (Bernard sings the world love a million times :)
No matter what happens in life: love will always be the cure for everything negative in this world.
The point is that we grow up with a set of lies told to us through a variety of people, but that actually nothing is set. We suppose to believe that there are borders, rules, timezones, gods etc. but in fact there is none if you look at the true sense of the word. But: everywhere in the world IS love, if we only were able to make an alliance and accept this as a fact.
That is the main message of the song (which is still a killer) if you ask me.
Together with it's B-side Lonesome Tonight, I think it's New Order's best attempt to a 'love song'.
"Thieves" is arguably the best thing the band have ever done and was a period in the bands history when they could do no wrong. Barneys performance was the best to date and is certainly something the band couldn't create if they were together today.
In this phase Barney was a very interesting front man - he'd found his confidence, was lyrically fascinating and was totally non cliched. Even the TOTP of 'Thieves' was great, though it didn't do the track any favours sales wise. Why Barney eventually started playing and singing in a conventional rock and roll structure and (as Brian Eno would say) play 'unnecessary rhythm guitar' I don't know.
Peter Hook stated on tour that Barney was a great lyricist and front man, but preferred his earlier era of how his vocal style was. Barney always banged on about how he was (still) looking for the perfect beat, but why did he end up creating Bad Lieutenant which as a musical force I find unacceptable and all very Seahorses like - i.e superfluous.
'Thieves' reminds us of the era when the band were untouchable and had a point to prove. Sadly, nothing lasts forever...

Agree with much of this - love is the cure for evil. But the fact that lies exist means that a real truth has to exist too, otherwise they would not be lies. I don't think you can have untruths without Truth. 'Do you believe in truth?' to quote the b-side...
