  1. Best bit - where the bass sequencer kicks in at the start.

  2. Worst bit - can't think of anything really.

  3. Love/hate - it used to be great live. Wish it was still played.

  4. Percentage - 85%

  5. Funny story - I was once mistaken for Paul Trowell at a gig !

I just happened to have a copy of Low Life beside me at work - I always keep one handy, cos you never know :)

Anyway...

  1. Best bit Despite Jeffrey Bernard's protests, it's still possible to hear the "I'm one of the people..." sample at the start. And the "bury your head and silence your cry" line - I love that.

  2. Worst bit The song after it :(

  3. Why you love/hate it It's more restrained and understated than the rest of Low Life, so I suppose because of that it stands out somewhat. Barney's lyrics are well above average here too.

  4. Rating in % Ooooh, low to mid 90s

  5. A funny true story that happened to you The funny ones aren't true and the true ones aren't funny :)

I don't normally weigh into theses SOTW thingies, but with such a great song, I couldn't resist:

  1. The bit where Barn goes "Without you I'd go insaaaaaaaa-aaaane"
  2. No worst bit, it's all class. Pants-free song.
  3. Just a beatiful mixture of the electronic and the played - the version on PFD is awesome.
  4. 98% (very little is perfect, except the Perfect Kiss and Temptation)
  5. Once spotted Al Jarvis at a NO gig. Went and asked him if he was in fact AJ, and when he said "maybe", I said "Hello, I'm Candy the Dog" He said "Oh..". Not that funny in retrospect...

  1. Best bit: All of it!!

  2. Worst bit: None of it!!

  3. Why you love/hate it: It is simply a classic tune from my all time favourite album!!

  4. Rating in %: 95%

  5. A funny true story that happened to you: Walking back from the pub with 4 of my mates, pretty intoxicated, decided to take a short cut over a field, I went on ahead, didn't see the dyke, work out the rest for yourselves!

Nonsense, I'm sure I gave you a big hug you daft apeth.

Agreed on the Sunrise point though. Classic New Order.

  1. Love the instrumentation. Very clean, if that's the right word. Bit too clean perhaps?
  2. The chorus. Bit too much angst for my liking. Oh woe is me, student nonsense. And Hooky's backing vocal cutting in behind it is just rubbish.
  3. I love Low-Life, so love this. But it is New Order by Numbers. It's also over-shadowed by some exemplary tracks on the same album and tends to go unnoticed.
  4. 70% Old Skool New Order.
  5. I threw up on a packed tube on my 23rd birthday around 7pm in the evening. I put my hand over my mouth to avoid too much splatter and it only served to project the vomit in various directions much in the same way as when you place your thumb over the end of a hosepipe. Thankfully I was too drunk to really care, though I wince at the thought now, and the consternation on people's faces.

In a similar scenario to Jarvo's was sick on the train back from the 89 cup final and was arrested for being drunk and incapable and was detained for the duration of the journey some 6-7 hours(whilst comatose) in the mail section.

Erm the song. I like it of the top of my head.

Best bit: "You search your empty brain in vain." All-time best example of classic NO slap-in-your-face lyrics.

best bit- the part about going insane worst bit-it moves just a wee bit too slow love it- cuz it's a classic song by the order... I'll give it something like a 83 % funny story-apparently, I tumbled down the stairs at Chandos, however, I am unable to confirm this fact...any witnesses?

Love the slightly sinister, pounding music, and the lyrics.

Worst bit: not much

Love it cause it's a great song on a great side of an album.

Rating 95%

On my 21st birthday, went to the state fair with some friends and proceeded to both drink myself silly and bet on the horses. Won some money at the track, and drank some more. When I was quite plastered, I ran into some close relatives from California who I hadn't seen in 3 years. I don't think they ever mentioned anything to my grandmother, who would've had a stroke at the thought of that.

 About time we reviewed this song

  1. Opening drum intro, the synth and sequencers, Barney's icy verses and emotional chorus, the multi-layered climactic/anti-climatic ending

  2. Nothing, one of New Order's underrated classics.

  3. All the reasons listed above, plus so much more....although I love TPK, Temptation, Ceremony, Thieves, etc., this is the track that I always blast when it comes on, and sometimes even repeat it.

  4. Rating: 100%

  5. Too tired to think of one, apologies please :spit:

1 The drums, the piano, the lyrics. 2 It could use a few remixes, could have been a single in my opinion. 3 It is just plain powerful, and very melodic. 4 97% 5 Sweet Jesus... Too many stories. But most are perverse, so..

  1. The opening, the lyrics
  2. There isn't any.
  3. The opening of this track just gets me in a mood to dance, but also has a gloomy quality to it. The lyrics probably add to the gloomy effect.

  5. When I was 17, I was helping out at the special olympics, which were being held at my high school. I had to get onto the field to help with setting up chairs, but no one gave me a field pass, so, with a bright idea, I decided to climb over a 6ft fence to get onto the field while no one was looking. However, at the top of the fence, a mental chain-link one with no plastic around the points where the wires met, my pants caught on to one of the points and as I tried getting down, the back of my pants ripped. Now, at the time of the event, I was wearing a shirt that covered up the rip, but when I came home, my mother, in seeing the rip, just began cursing at me in Ukrainian.

  1. the drum beat
  2. nothing, really--except the obligatory strained vocals
  3. it's a haunting, damn catchy little song that fits right into the rest of Low Life. probably the 2nd best song on the album. a bit depressing, but oh well.
  4. 99%
  5. One time I puked on a guy at a Rancid concert (back in the day, before they got all stupid on their new album) because I got really dehydrated from jumping around and then drank a grape soda really fast. Needless to say, the scene turned ugly (and purple) in a hurry.

Its one of the best songs on Low-Life,which is their finest moment. should of kept the pumped full of drugs title and released it as a single,oh the controversy it would have caused.:D

  5. At a birthday party of my friend/classmate back in 1993, after all the ladies left, at around 1:30 AM, we decided to get some sluts to do a strip show for us. When the slut (only one) arrive and is about to take off her clothes in a mini-stage that we've prepared, she requested for some music first before she takes off everything. The host/celebrant got a stereo component from his room and immediately opened the radio to a FM station. He forgot to turn down the volume, so we were greeted by Bette Midler's song "From A Distance" on top volume, with the lines "God is watching us!... From a distance." The host quickly turned off the radio and we all rolled to the floor laughing. After 5 minutes, the show went on!

Indeed!
