PORTSMOUTH fans sing loudest and longest in the Premiership, a survey says.

Passionate Pompey supporters spend an average 58 minutes singing per match — at an ear-splitting 97 decibels.

Newcastle and Liverpool fans clock 96 decibels — the same as a pneumatic drill — but don’t sing for as long.

Nearest are Man United supporters — 55 minutes — who, with 34 different songs a match, are the most inventive.

Top of the league ... Portsmouth are loudest

Charlton fans were found to be quietest — 65 decibels.

They, along with Middlesbrough’s supporters, also sang fewest songs, with six, the survey discovered.

Champions Chelsea set the record for the most foul-mouthed chants, website fanchants.com’s research said.

Its founder, Michael Dennis, said: “We measured the noise generated with a decibel meter.

“It’s an exhaustive study that reflects the true passion of fans.”

The noise levels were recorded at the first five Premiership games of the season — Pompey were unbeaten — and the average was taken.

Michael, a fan of struggling Leeds, is now collating chants from all Championship clubs to establish a league table.

He added: “I’m dreading going to Elland Road. The way it’s been going this season I reckon opening a packet of crisps will make more noise than us.”

DOPEY Portsmouth striker Benjani Mwaruwari, 28, used his BMW’s sat nav to try to reach the club’s Fratton Park ground from London — and ended up in a builder’s yard FIVE MILES away. The £4.1million Zimbabwe star rang the club for directions.

Aye, but they've only got one song! Makes a change for the team to have more points than the fans have got songs.....

Good spot Gem. We are very passionate people here and we do have more than one song Tim. We also sing about all the people we hate which is effectively anyone who was born north of the island of portsea.

Great fans, the whole ground sings i remember the times when we have been five down to Arsenal at home and Henry could not beleive the support he was getting for him to score another goal.

Its been the same for 25 years. I cut my teeth at pompey when we were in the old fourth division and we got 21000 and 24000 in a week. All my life pompey have been crap and this is only our fifth season in the top division in my forty year life, therefore we presently have much to sing about. Ironically the loudest I have ever heard was when we only had about 9000 at a game against stockport. the whole ground and I mean everyone including the directors sang alan balls blue and white army for over 25 minutes. we just escpaed that season.

At times we are nearly as loud as shug and don killing blue monday down the front at gigs but a lot more tunefull
