Rangers get NEW manager

Walter Smith admits he never envisaged returning to Rangers, but concedes it was the only role which would make him quit the Scotland national team job.

The Old Firm giants appointed Smith as Paul Le Guen's replacement on Wednesday, although they have yet to settle on a compensation package with the Scottish Football Association.

Smith was overjoyed to be returning to Ibrox for a second spell as manager, but concedes there was a sense of disappointment at leaving the Scotland post.

"I'm delighted obviously and it's one I never thought I would see again, but you never know in football," said Smith in a press conference on Sky Sports News.

"Obviously there is a little bit of regret leaving the national team, but coming back to Rangers is something I felt I had to do.

"There is a disappointment as not many people get the opportunity to manage at national level and it's disappointing when you have to make that decision to leave."

Reports had suggested Smith could combine both roles, at least until the conclusion of Scotland's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

While Smith would have considered that option, he feels the SFA's reluctance to accept such a compromise is the right decision.

He added: "The SFA said to me that it was one (option) that, despite the articles in the press, they did not think about.

"From my point of view, I was prepared to do whatever was necessary to make the change as smooth as possible.

"From their point of view, they said they didn't think it would work and I think, at the end of the day, that's the right thing."

He'll be out by the end of the season.

If Walter was ever given a half decent sum of money for transfers, I'm sure he'd prove himself a far better manager than his foolish detractors give him credit for; better than Ferguson/Paisley/Shankley etc, at least the equal of Stein. Exactly my point, considering his budget in relation to Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal etc he held his own with a bunch of sub (Stubbs) standard players.

Smith spent about 45-50m at Rangers, this brought domestic success in Scotland granted, ultimately though, Rangers were chasing the European dream all to no avail. His record in Europe (excluding season 92-93) was atrocious.

Jock Stein's Celtic won the European Cup, lost in another final and competed in 4 semi-finals in total. 24 domestic trophies were won in 13 years at a time when Scotland had representatives in the latter stages of European competitions regularly. Rangers won the CWC in '72, Dundee and Kilmarnock reached the semi-finals in the Fairs Cup (Uefa Cup) and Dunfermline and Hibs reached the QF of the Fairs and CWC respectively. Smith won most of his trophies against very mediocre opposition, Celtic were financially on their knees during that period.

Still, the only team this has happened to in the history of the competition. Rangers have competed in European competitions in more seasons than ANY other British club, 46 times as of and including 2006-07.

Most of the Lisbon Lions attribute their win to the team being composed of 11 Glaswegians (they were all born within 30 miles of Glasgow) Jock Stein was just the icing on the cake.

Where did I ever say I'd changed allegiance? NOWHERE! 1st and foremost I ALWAYS have been and remain a Rangers FC supporter.

As a child growing up in Glasgow my pal asked which English team I supported & I said Man City. (As I grew older and was exposed to more English football and saw how crap it was/is/ and forever shall remain, I couldn't really give a shit which crappy English team gets gubbed (just as long as they keep getting thrashed), but I'd still prefer Man City to beat any other English team.

Contrary to your opinion Malcolm, i was over the moon with Scotland's position in the WC qualifiers. Shame Walter baled out before the games in Paris and Bari.

This may be true, meaning Rangers have tried and failed to win the European Cup more than any other team in Europe. Celtic have won more games in Europe than any other Scottish club by the way.

True, the Lions were all born within 30 miles of Celtic Park, Jock Stein however nurtured this team and developed them into the best football team in the whole of Europe.

Johnston left Celtic in '87 and the King of Kings (Henrik Larsson) won a league winner's medal in his first season.

Larson was signed by Celtic manager Wim Jansen in July 1997; the year Rangers won 9 in a Row. In 1988(Celtic's centenary) Celtic won the League by a bawhair: stopping 10 in row-just!

Yes Larsson signed in 1997, but he won the title in his 1st season. (97-98) Our centenary was indeed 1988, but we stopped the 10 in 1998.
