A long four + minutes: West Ham v Spurs

Definitely the longest overrun of announced stoppage time that I've seen........so I'll enjoy it while I can, thankfully my neighbors weren't home this morning, they might've called the cops

After West Ham's strong start in the first half, I was seriously wondering if Spurs could even grab a point, and I was quite glad to have continued watching. I don't blame Tevez for his celebration, even I had to smile at that one.

Aaron Lennon's backheel pass for the equalizer was lovely, I remember thinking "C'mon Teemu...don't waste that superb effort" and thankfully he didn't. Oh, and thank you Paul Stalteri for continuing to make the run and finish the play.

About as nice as the win over Chelsea earlier, and a nice bit of revenge for the last day of the season last year, it was a perfect start for a lovely day.

Putting my refs hat on for a minute, and mainly in response to the TV pundits comments at the end of the games yesterday and on Saturday, the "time added on" as displayed on the board by the 4th official is a MINIMUM time that shall be played as a result of the stoppages that have occurred during the half, it is not a precise amount. Only the referee himself knows what the precise figure will be - and let's face it, can you imagine a board going up that says 4 mins 47 seconds? The ref can't win - if there were to be 4 mins 47 seconds played, he couldn't instruct the 4th official to put up 5 mins, as there would only be 4-47 to play, so he must put up 4 mins.

When you consider that the ref makes this calculation between 87 and 88 mins of normal time, you have to allow some scope for "additional time" over and above the signalled time. Yesterday, for example, Spurs scored their equaliser seconds after the ref had indicated the relevant stoppage time to the 4th official. The effect of them scoring and taking 45 seconds before the game could be restarted (the refereeing clock stops when a goal is scored until the game restarts, it is not the same as when the ball goes out of play for a throw, corner etc) was that the 4 mins indicated was automatically wrong, and needed to be extended by 45 seconds.

Of course you'll never get a manager whose team are 1-0 up to admit that this is the case, but it is!
