a must for all liverpool fans.
Here We go gathering Cups in May. 7 European Cup Finals. 7 Fans. 7 amazing adventures, in which the ingenuity (and pockets) of the fans have been challenged as they set their sights on getting to that final by hook or by crook. Peter Hooton (the Farm) does the 1981 Paris bit.
This is one of the best football books I've ever read. Dead simple, just a bunch of lads following Liverpool through one season ... okay, so half that bunch of lads happen to have been in the Farm, but they're still just regular blokes going about their business. Think I sat and read this in one session.

yeah got that one Al. going back a few years now.
Sampson writes one of the years, 84 or 85 i think, in the Gathering Cups book. some mad stories. fans went to Rome in 1977 with no coat, no fresh undies, and just a bag of butties. that was it. some one told them to put olive oil on their sunburn and some did. classic. when the food ran out on the train, they turned up at this little village in Italy where bread etc hung up on hooks outside the shop. needless to say, that town never forgot who arrived in numbers that day. haha. Hooton sits over from me in this new singing section in the Kop. except never seen him sing. but his was a good chapter.

Talking of Italians, this is excellent as well.
Think the bloke is a Guardian journo or summat, but he got well lucky with this book, especially the ending with Verona clinging on to dear life in Serie A.
Totally alien experience from being an English fan these days though - fans over there seem to be stuck in the 70's!

If you see pics of our win in Rome 77 you'll notice loads of red and white chequred flags. they were bought outside the ground. those flags were being knocked out, outiside the Olympic Stad for the equivalent of £3.50. fuck me. the Eye tie must have retired to a desert island on those takings. Also, everybody had white flary jeans. in the days before Sambas etc. imagine those jeans after 5 days coming back on a train thru Europe. they went to this nightclub in Romania, in the forest. It was rammed with gorgeous babes who wanted to marry them. just funny stories.
loads of boss stories right upto Istanbul. then it got boring. everyone on planes. too dear for a ticket. nice hotels. the Uefa/Platini fuck up etc.

'Amongst the Thugs' by Bill Bufford, an American guy who had no agenda, is the first one I read. I think its probably one of, if not the first, documentary of english footie violence.It started the whole hoolie storie telling gravy train of the 90s and beyond.
Its a great book, and puts some of the, 'we are the top boys' books to shame.
Also, 'Guvnors' by Mickey Francis isn't a bad read.
By the way, anyone seen 'Tashforce'? Documentary spoof about Tash Macdermot' an officer of the law who goes undercover to infultrait a hooligan mob. You can buy the dvd off e-bay and the like, or just youtube it. Quite funny.

Dave Hewitson's book The Liverpool Boys Are In Town 78/82 is a cracking read. Gives adecent insight into the whole football culture. I actually remember doing/having most of the stuff in it when i was a young one.
This was a good read of the non-hoolie variety.
Came out maybe 10 years ago? Bloke basically has to do all 92 league grounds in one season, and writes a small chapter on each.

Nicky Allt did a chapter in Gathering cups. he did this one too.
a lot of these fellas are ex-Annie Road enders. they think they're better than us Breck Road Kopites.
Read both of these on me hols in the summer, lazing by the pool

Yeah, got this a couple of years back, an excellent read. Have you noticed how many of the Hellas players are now top stars in Italy? Camoranesi, Gilardino, Oddo are the first three that spring to mind.
Another good one is Forza Italia by Paddy Agnew.

It's implied in the book that Garrincha probably lost his virginity to a Goat cos all the local boys lost their virginity to goats! It wasn't a taboo subject! All the local girls wanted to keep their virginity so the best the lads could hope for was a bit of oral. They had to go elsewhere for full sex! The farmyard!
Having said that, Garrincha fcuked absolutely everything that moved in later life. He was a bit of a boy!

Think those two are in the couple close on t' subject I've read in the past. Just don't seem to get past the Noo Yoiker. Hard real copy and.. NY online. Its Magazine is also online, The Atlantic etc.s..

the ccs(hibs) book has just came out after much hype and i have someone had the misfortune to be quoted in it about a gig where it kicked off between hibs and motherwell
so depsite never actually being in a fight since i was about 9,i've managed to be mentioned in a hooligan's book
