Saw Newcastle at the peak of their powers under Keegan when they played at Stoke in the mid-90s. They'd just signed Ginola and tore us apart 4-0 at home, though it could easily have been 8 or 9.
I've seen Stoke play the likes Liverpool, ManUre, Arsenal a bunch of times but I've never seen a side like that Newcasle outfit. Just astonishing.
This time, however, Keegan won't last until the summer.
Cant belive Keegans back at Newcastle. The pressure at City got to him, but that will be nothing compared to that currently at Newcastle. Still, whilst at City we were promoted as champions and did play some of the best football ever to grace Maine rd. (and Eastlands) Theres no doubt he is a tragi-comic figure, whos heart & passion are in the right place. (his sleeve)
that was some attacking side back in the mid 90's.

Nice guy with plenty of experience as a player and manager steps in to manage a failing team... They may well wipe the floor with Stoke this time, but it won't be because of Keegan. It will simply be that Newcastle don't want the embarrassment. Keegan is too nice and therefore too ineffectual to last.

I respect the passion of the fans and the new manager, wish we could generate that at chuffin Ewood, but I think they'll go hand in hand together down a slippery slope this time without massive Abramovich style investment. The Prems changed a hell of a lot since he was last involved. It was also a darn sight easier for him to have a massive impact last time out, as they were toward the bottom of the old div2 and it was a no lose situation for him. Coupled with the fact that hes walked from every footie job hes had and unfortunately for the beetroot buttie eaters after the initial hailing of the return of the messiah he'll be gone within 18 month and Shearer can return and rescue them from the basement of the fizzy pop league a la Keegan '92!!

It doesn't matter what you lot, or anyone else, thinks, I'm absolutely thrilled to bits that King Kev is back. Everyone up here is.
Of course the Premier League has changed since last time he was here, you don't need to tell us that, we've played in it for long enough.
Without a doubt it will be more difficult this time around, but Keegan hasn't been out of the game for all that long and he had no mangerial experience at all last time he came in and effectively saved Newcastle United.
Plus, look at Mark Hughes. He had no league managerial experience at all (although obviously had managed Wales), but it didn't stop Blackburn giving him the job.
Special K coming home will raise morale amongst the players, fans and around the city in general. He plays a brand of football that we love up here and with the backing that i'm sure he will have been promised by Mike Ashley, I think better times are just around the corner
As far as i'm concerned, Premier League football is far better for having Kevin Keegan, for all of his passion, flair and charisma. I know Newcastle United is.

What I did find strange was that Keegan had been running a soccer school in Scotland. An ex England international player and manager who's not short of brass teaching kids how to dribble around cones, all in a country that despises English football. Does that not seem odd to anyone else?
But Newcastle are a BIG club, they once won a cup - don't yer know.

We have been playing shite, no doubt about it, but we regularly pull in a crowd of over 50,000 for home matches and sell out our away allocations. We are great fans, considering there has been little return from the team over the years (apart from the best football the Premier League has seen played under Kevin Keegan that is. See my earlier point on KK). No urban myth about it.
Over the life of the Premier League only Man U have a larger average attendance and they've had plenty the cheer. Newcastle fans compare favourably to everyone else in this respect.
Over the last 15 years, the Capacity of St James's Park has increased by approx 15,000 because of the development of the new stands. That was the period that Al referred to when quoting the stats. So yes, the capacity has increased quite a lot and there's still a waiting list for season tickets.
I can't believe that you are all so quick to have a dig at the toon. People in glass houses.....

How can Newcastle have ever played the best football? The best football played in the Premier League has been played by either Man United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal or Chelsea, that is winning football.
This is what annoys me about "The Toon" all this "we played the best football" bullshit. You cant play the best football if you dont win anything. Give me five at the back, a big man upfront and long ball any day at the week, because it'll always be more successful than that "tactics" Newcastle employed in the mid 90's.

We have been playing shite, no doubt about it, but we regularly pull in a crowd of over 50,000 for home matches and sell out our away allocations. We are great fans, considering there has been little return from the team over the years (apart from the best football the Premier League has seen played under Kevin Keegan that is. See my earlier point on KK). No urban myth about it.
Over the life of the Premier League only Man U have a larger average attendance and they've had plenty the cheer. Newcastle fans compare favourably to everyone else in this respect.
Over the last 15 years, the Capacity of St James's Park has increased by approx 15,000 because of the development of the new stands. That was the period that Al referred to when quoting the stats. So yes, the capacity has increased quite a lot and there's still a waiting list for season tickets.

How can Newcastle have ever played the best football? The best football played in the Premier League has been played by either Man United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal or Chelsea, that is winning football.
This is what annoys me about "The Toon" all this "we played the best football" bullshit. You cant play the best football if you dont win anything. Give me five at the back, a big man upfront and long ball any day at the week, because it'll always be more successful than that "tactics" Newcastle employed in the mid 90's.
The winning team doesn't always play the best football Liam, and teams that play the long ball game certainly don't.

You are of course right. I've looked back and you never anywhere mentioned that Boro are a big club...glad we've established they aren't.
Petal does look derogatory in print but I accept that wasn't how it was intended so I will take back what I said about that, it was unfair.
As for sticking to football, I believe I was talking about football aswell and answering the point someone made about the lack of fans being interested in the club in the eighties.
