Proper meaning????? We cant help having more fans than the rest of you lot... And as for that old cliche, the grauniad did a survey pointing out that Utd had the highest proportion of fans living within a 20 mile radius of the ground

What's the Grauniad thing then? You've got more fans living within 20miles of your ground than any other team? Or a higher proportion, or what? That's interesting to hear, though I find it hard to believe. Surely any London club - from West Ham to Spurs, Chelski to Arsenal would have more local fans? I think half my office (I work in the City) who actually take an interest in footie, support either United or Liverpool. You can't imagine someone living well away from London having an interest in a London team though, no? When you Norvern boys start taking an interest in Southern teams however, you know there is something seriously up with football!

I'll try to find a link- possibly from their website- but it's actual numbers of the crowd attending- done on a sample of season ticket holders (which of course is only a sample I realise). However, I presume that Arsenal and Chelski would now be suffering a similar issue with non-local fans snapping up tickets for their games, no?
It's not beyond the realms of possiblity for Northerners to support Southern teams - a good mate of mine is a Spurs fan and there are quite a few youngsters who now sport the colours of Arsenal and Chelsea in and around Manchester- thanks to Sky of course
And those boys in your office - how many actually travel up to Manchester or Liverpool for each game? Are they fans or is it just cool to follow fashion? There are many people who travel to every game and are just as much a fan as anyone else. The bloke who sits behind me travels up from Cornwall for every game- midweekers as well as weekend- getting home at gone 4 the following morning.

Eh? One minute you've got the highest proportion of local fans. Next you're talking about some bloke from Cornwall?
Are we saying he's Cornish, or a relocated Manc? If it's the former, why does a bloke from Cornwall support United? Or indeed, what sort of bloke from Cornwall supports United? There must be 30 or 40 closer clubs closer to him (London is even closer) so why support United from that distance?
Or we simply saying he's a gloryhunter?

I was merely pointing out a counter argument to those tired old cliches noted above. Yes we do have fans all over the world- but so do Celtic, Rangers, Liverpool, Cheslea,AC Milan, Arsenal etc. All the big clubs now have multi national fanbases. However as the Guardian survey noted we also have a strong local base of support. The lad from Cornwall is Cornish but his dad is Mancunian - so what? He shows a fantastic level of support and has been going since 83- hardly halcyon days for us as a club!!!!
That being said, I understand why fans of lower league clubs get hung up on this- it's a matter of survival. I go to watch Bury when we're not at home and it's a struggle - 2,779 there yesterday and it's clear that the club lives hand to mouth. I know that there are more people from Bury who go to United than go to watch their local club - but that's always been the case - I'm sure that Southport, Marine, Tranmere etc, have the same problems with Liverpool and Everton and your London clubs like Brentford and Orient suffer in the same way from the likes of Arsenal,Spurs, Chelsea etc.

Hardly halcyon days? You were in the top flight the entire time. You'd already won the European Cup. How many FA Cup finals were you in over that period too? And how many times did you get into Europe as well?

You won the League cup - what you whinging for?! 
It's true that the bigger clubs have more support worldwide, and also true that the likes of United and Liverpool have more support outside of their hometowns in comparison to say Chelsea, Arsenal and probably a lot of that support is down to the individual clubs success through the years. I have met many folk during my time from London, or from other parts of the world that do support and follow teams outside the big names but they tend to also be top flight clubs!
If support is low in the lower divisions it's always gonna be difficult for those clubs to get much support outside their local town, let alone around the world. Don't forget, media has a big part to play and doesn't lend it's support as it should to lower league clubs. If you're out in Japan or Asia, you're not likely to see a game between Barnet and Exeter or Luton and Carlisle, because they barely make it to the screens here. The only excitement around lower league clubs is around FA cup time when there are some 'Giant' killings on the table.
Big clubs like Arsenal, United, Chelsea, Liverpool do a lot of work in parts of the world, e.g Asia with young kids out there - through the season and during pre-season so this also adds to the recognition of support they receive from such parts of the world.
That said, there are supporters of the bigger clubs that have been lifelong supporters, because of family, because of living locally, because we all went with our mates as kids just like any other team. It's just fortunate that we've had successful teams and have been able to see out teams win big things through the years. That doesn't make us any less credible in our support, though.
I also don't get why some supporters feel the need to harp on about how magnificent their support is, that it's better, bigger and stronger than that of any other team. So what? I only know what I do from following my team. I don’t give a shit about another team’s support. Let’s be frank, in many cases it sinks to levels that are shameful, and if that means being the greatest fans, shove it where the sun don’t shine.
But as we're on the Guardian 'tip' a few weeks ago the latest football survey was an article asking what the average age of today’s football fan is in the Premiership. 38-45 is the answer in this survey, so what does that tell us about top flight football? When I started going in the early 80s the ground was full with kids my age or slightly older. It cost nothing to get in, food was cheap it was a regular day out you could do on your pocket money. That’s just not possible now. Arsenal has a 3,000 capacity for the Junior Gunners but what’s that in comparison to the rest of the ground? Even then it’s pricey. Kids just can’t afford to go and watch the bigger clubs now, that is the truth. The legacy for us fans that have gone our whole lives is going be lost with our kids. It’s only going to be for those that can afford it in the majority that attend – not the young fans or youth. That's why every club now has a different type of fan.
Logged on to Arsenal today and they now do ‘Arsenal’ holidays WTF? It’s complete joke.
My son goes to Arsenal on occasion through the season, but he goes to watch Barnet HOME and AWAY. He has a season ticket that costs 30 quid for the whole season. Barnet are shit – but he loves it, getting on the coach and rocking up at football grounds that look like something out of Mad Max, where the toilet facilities have been the same since 1963.
I would take a guess that in the next 10 years we will see an even bigger decline in ‘proper’ fans going to watch the bigger clubs in the Premiership. I know loads of people from many clubs that have given up their season tickets just because football is simply not the same anymore. The support is not the same.
I would hope that this will be a beneficial advantage and will see a rise in numbers over the coming years (especially of the young people and young fans of football who want to watch live games locally or wider) of support for clubs like Barnet, Orient, Luton, Bury and that they can be better represented as well as giving true football fans a taste of real football grit once again!

But of course! Wembley is WBA's spiritual home, what with their carpet football and life-long ethos of total sporting purity.
What on earth they've been doing spending the last two decades largely playing the likes of Stoke, Luton and Colchester is a mystery to even the greatest minds on the planet. How they've only managed to beat Stoke once in the last 19 years is, frankly, a crime against our glorious game. Quite how the big-hoofing Stoke got promoted as Champions in 1992/1993 from the division formely known as THE TURD is a travesty: it's shit triumphing over beauty.
And quite how Stoke are top of the Championship while the Baggies curl up and lick thir own arses in misery is something that only God in Heaven (read: the Hawthorns) can know.
There is ONLY glory in West Bromich. Oh yes.
