So prickface himself has quit the BBC in protest at their football coverage, because apparently its too formal.

Well FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING DICKHEAD.

He is the biggest tool to have ever been a football pundit. Ever since he was hired, all he went on about was how crap Sven was and how we needed and Englishman in charge. All because he wouoldnt play his adopted son who wasnt even on the Chelsea bench at the time. And when he got his Englishman, looko what happenned. Ian Wright is a fucking dickhead who knows so little about football consideirng he played the game for twenty years.

"Yeah, we need passion" "isnt Sven terrible"

Well get this, he dressed like a fucking court jester. He is one of the reasons why Football on the BBC has been unwatchable for years now.

So fuck to Gladiators, because thats where fucking arseholes and idiots like you belong.

I ain't having this.

The difference between Ian Wright and other pundits is that he's proper football fan, if he had not been a player - he'd have been on the terraces with us.

Sven was shit.

So what if his son is adopted? What point are you making exactly? Of course he wanted his son in the England team, what parent in that position wouldn't? And the only reason he has a real bee in his bonnet about his son, is because of how many times he was looked over as an England player himself. He never got the opportunity in his career to play major England tournaments.

If you really know so much about football, you ain't seriously telling me having an Englishman as England manager, who was shit, was personally down to Ian Wright, surely? The point is completly lost on you.

I love Ian Wright, because he tells it how it is and because he's one of us, and is as flawed.

Now be a good lad and run back to Alan Shearer.

Cock.

Sven was shit? Yeah, because top eight in the world is opbviously not as good as not being in the top 16 in Europe. And topping every qualifying group just isnt good enough is it? As for losing three competitive games in five years, one of which to the World Cup Winners and the other to the reigning European Champions... just terrible. :skeptic:

Ian Wright led the chorus in the media, and especially the BBC, to get rid of Sven and get and English manager in. Despite there being no one good enough to take over. He fucking laid into Sven after every England game during the qualifiers for the 06 World Cup. If England "only" won 1-0, he needed to bring "My Shaun" on. And England would have beated Portugal in the World Cup if "My Shaun" was there. It foes on and on. And when McClaren took over, and picked Shaun Wright Phillips, he couldnt lay enough praise on him. And I seem to remember him being very silent during the highlights programme after England got beat by Croatia away, when "My Shaun" (and Defoe and Downing) came on and did absolutely nothing. And then there was the time, (I think it was before Macedonia game) when he said it was... The previous managers fault!:skeptic:

His role as a BBC pundit was to examine and analyse the field on play. Not to sit there and bitch about his son not being picked. Which is what he did, all the time.

Ian Wright did not tell it how it is. After all his cheerleading for an English Manager, when it all came crumbling down on that glorious night in November, he was, by definition, speechless, he, in his own words "just didnt know what to say"

And as for Shearer, well, you probably didnt see my Facebook Ststus...

Shearer, Wright and Lineker are the main reasons why I've given up watching Football on the BBC and now prefer to follow it on Five Live. Where my favourite pundit is Graham Taylor. A place where you get football coverage provided by people who know what they are talking about, and arent afraid to say it, regardless of whether it be popular or nor. Instead of the jingoistic, nonsensical, populist, ill informed drivel that Shearer, Lineker and Wright have provided us with.

Chip. On. Shoulder.

Li, you telling me Ian brought down Sven as England manager? Nothing to do with getting caught with his dick out once too many time, and a little too close to home (FA) that finally nailed him eventually? Oh, and along with the fact that he just simply couldn't progress the England side? Top 8? England should be achieving much higher than that my friend!

Ian has long been a passionate England fan - way before 'his Shaun' was on the scene. Look at the studio footage from 2001 when England beat Germany? Lineker shit himself with Wrighty jumping on the studio tables. A classic memory in TV football for any football fans.

Granted, he's not a conventional pundit, or even the best - but he's a proper fan, he speaks what many fans are thinking or feeling. You might hate it - but there are plenty of footy fans - from whatever team, who love his passion and his brutal honesty, and the fact he gets proper fucked off when things go tits up, or even if it's personal.

He's not smooth like Hansen, or boring like Shearer - he's just Ian Wright. I know tons of footy fans that laugh and chat to him about football like they would down the pub.

That's the differnce. He's not shit, he's just different. You don't like him - fine. Get the fuck on with it.

I don't respect one thing you say, or you - because of how you say it, and how you talk about people.

That argument you've churned out above is pathetic. How can I take you seriously? I don't.

So which part of my argument was terrible?

Why should England be achieving much higher than 8th? So we won the World Cup once? After that, we got to the semis once, didnt qualify three times, and got to the quarters twice. England dont have the strength in depth to win the major tournmanents. Whehn you've got players like.... oh... Shaun Wright Phillips, who cant put a decent pass together. Players like Jermaine Defoe, who Ian Wright led the chorus of people moaning about him not being in the World Cup squad, conveniently disregarding his record of one goal in twemnty six Internationals at the time and the fact that he was fourth choice at Spurs.

If anything, England overachieved under Sven. When the 2008 qualifying draw was made (before he was sacked), it was a given that England would top the group, and Crotia/Russia/Israel would be fighting for second place. There was also never a chance that England wouldnt qualify for Euro 2004 or the 2006 World Cup. Which is drastically different from anything I can remember in the 90's and when keegan was in charge.

When Sven took over, England were bottom of the group having lost to a god awful german team and drew 0-0 away with Finland. After Sven took over, England qualified as group winners!

So a quick look at history. Euro 2000, 2nd in the group and lucky to go through against Scotland. 1998- topped the Group after Italy drew in georgia. Fair play to Hoddle though, he had a good team for that World Cup. If they'd beaten argentina they wouldnt have beaten Holland in the next round though 1996- Didnt need to qualify. got to the semis after Spain had a perfectly good goal disallowed. 1994- Didnt qualify 1992- top of the group i think. Eliminated in the First Round "Swedes 2 Turnips 1"

Ian Wright can be as passionate fan as he wants to be. And that fine. But he held a very influential position in that chair, having access to god knows how many million people watching at home or in the pub. And he abused that position by not doing what he was paid to do, which is analyse the goings on in the game, but instead used it to undermine the England head coach and promote his sons ambitions. He's not paid to be a "fan". He's not paid to be someone the "real fan" can relate to. He is there to analyse the play, to point out the good and bad points. The only thing he pointed out was how bad the Head Coach was. Despite the fact that England were winning.

If I want tohear the biased views of Passionate fans, then I can (and often do) during 606, or one of the many phone in shows. And I'll tell you what, a lot of these people make a hell of a lot more sense than Ian Wright ever did. Of course, a lot of them dont, but still...

A good pundit explains whats goin on in the game, explains the tactics,, suggests changes that might be made, what the manager and players are trying to do etc etc. Thats why Andy gray is regarded as one of, if not the best. Ian Wirght, never did this (I'll cyut him a bit of slack because only Hansen and Lee Dixon on thr BBC do this). His main suggestion was... to bring "My Shaun" on. Or how great "My Shaun" is. I cannot remember one time he actually contributed anything worthwile to the debate.

If I want to hear the views of a passionate fan, I can ask the person I'm stood next to in the pub, or I can listen to 606.

Really? Why's that then? I don't want to change the course of the thread here but this is a perfect example of England fans thinking their team are much better than they actually are.

After the Croatia game I recall getting shouted down by the Englanders on here who insisted that such a phenomenon didn't exist among the fans, only among the media. Well it does. And here's a good example!

Sven was a victim of the hostility towards foreign coaches which prevails among fans of England, Scotland and practically nowhere else on the footballing planet (certainly not in Eire!).

Berti Vogts got it tight up here from day one yet he took us to within 90 mins of Euro 2004 from a bitch of a qualifying group and after beating Holland 1-0 in the first leg of the Play Off. He also brought through all of the youngsters who now comprise one of the best Scotland teams in years. Yet because he wasn't "one of us" he got a proper doing in the media. Pathetic.

Sven did over-acheive in that he got England to every competition that he was in charge for and (if I'm not mistaken) got them beyond the group stages as well. Putting all rivalries aside that's a better strike rate than he should have been acheiving with the quality of team he had at his disposal. In international terms the England team from 1990 onwards has been, at best, second rate. To qualify for every tournament and get beyond the group stages is a big ask and he managed it. To get out of that group with Argentina, Sweden and Nigeria in the 2002 WC was exceptional.

You can't deny the statistics.

Like all things on tv we have a choice, we either watch or if we don't enjoy it we switch it off a choice you have made by choosing to listen to five live - fair enough. I make you right on the covergae of football on the BBC its poor, john motson should have been hung up to dry in 1978 and Alan Hansen did retire sometime in the mid 90s but appears on bbc (when not soing his bit for morrisons) to run out some old cliches about "shocking defending" that at one time made him a leading pundit. Heres the thing though some people will castigate me for my opinion on John motson because it is alas an opinion and yes obviously I feel mine is more worthy than others because it is mine.

With this in mind you can dislike Ian wright as a tv pundit, but it doesn't take a brain scientist to work out exactly what Wright would be like on tv - he has always been an enthusiastic over the top figure, a player who played on instinct so yes he probably doesn't have the tactical nouse of some "pundits" but I found his laughing at Gallas kicking the ball in anger in the last world cup (check youtube) and his general bias more entertaining than Mark lawrenson rolling out yet another joke he found in his last collection of christmas crackers. Ironically enough you state your disregard for the bbc coverage are you therefore not actually agreeing with Wright that it needs to change?? Your whole he has a responsibilty when sitting in that chair is dubious too, you say you listen to five live because and I quote its "A place where you get football coverage provided by people who know what they are talking about, and arent afraid to say it, regardless of whether it be popular or not." well wasn't Ian wright only expressing his opinions whether popular or not?? The only difference I can find is that you disagree with Wright, but agree with Graham Taylor - a man who I actually like as a pundit, but who did famously utter "do i not like" as england crashed out of qualifying for a world cup not exactly resounding qualifications for knowing alot about football! And yes Wright is a hero of mine a player who in the early nineties became one of the first idols who was able to be proud to be black and a footballer when other great black players before like Barnes had not had the same fortune and been able to be proud in the same way. Ian Wright has always been the same and for some that might be he is a bit of a dick, but if so I suggest you switch off or turn over and at least have some respect for his achivements in the game and the breaking down of barriers he achieved - something that like it or not got him to be more qualified than you or I to be a football pundit on match of the day and gave him a right to have an opinion on his son, the england team and the bbc.

We'll see about Eire if it starts going wring for Trappatoni...

But thats pretty much hit the nail on the head. And who was at the centre of this? Ian Wright, in his newspaper column and on BBC TV. he seemed to be under the impression that it was Svens fault that a number of players, including his own son, were unable to pass the ball effectively, that the majority of players in the England squad cannot kick with both feet, that there wasnt a left sided midfielder. All this, and more, was conveniently brushed under the carpet and blamed on Sven for "lacking passion" every single time.

Well, Ian Wright got his wish, we got passion, we got a man who could shout, and point and move around in the techincal area like no other. And look what it got us? A summer holiday to Trinidad and Tobago. And Ian Wright just didnt know what to say.

England - who are surely currently at an ebb far lower than I can remember in recent years - are still ranked 11th in the World. That's a fact you can't deny.

Watching football under Sven, however, was shite. Bar a brief honeymoon period he didn't exactly do anything to set the world alight. And a lot of his undoing - in my mind - was the pandering to the bigger egos in the camp (Beckham anyone?). McLaren, in general, was just a continuation and should never have got the job. He did give Barry his chance though, and proved once and for all that Heskey & Owen were perfect foils for one another. It's too early to judge Capello but - thus far - I don't really see what he's doing, on-the-pitch at least, which is changing this pattern. His only real plus-points so far appear to have been made in the background - banning the Wags, etc.

We do have some class players, I can't see how anyone - least of all a Jock - can deny that. We've got as good a selection of central defenders and midfielders as any country on this planet. We just lack any real quality out wide (Lennon, Downing, etc, will never be world class) and we'll always need a fox-in-the-box to complement Rooney. We have plenty of individual talent but don't posses a world-beating 'team'.

Anyways, I resent posting on this. International is basically for benders and window-lickers. Club before country every time. And International friendlies are the ultimate insult to football fans.

Graham Taylor will sit there and explain his reasoning. Ian Wright has never done that. All he did was come out with wild statements which had little logic or forebearing other than to promote his own biased agenda. Lets not forget, this isw the man who went on national television and said that Sven didnt know he was doing for picking OWEN HARGREAVES. Thats afive times Bundesliga winner and Champions League winner with Bayern Munich. And ian Wright didnt want him in the squad.

I have respect for him as a footballer. I have zero respect for him as a pundit. Because he will nto do what he is paid to do and in incomprehensible ramblings have helped ruin football on the BBC.

Agree with you on Motson though. Although Motson can stay as long as he likes if it means he doesnt get succeeded by Johnathan Pearce.

It is only the tabloids who didn't like him , all because he likes the ladies too much. You can't knock Sven's record as an England manager , it wasn't his fault Rooney and Owen were injured for the last world cup. And I doubt we would have won it playing Defoe up front. The World Rankings are a joke. The fact is, England had a easy qualifying group compared to some (Scotland) and fucked it up royally. If England did hang on for the draw and qualify, and gone into the same group as Russia have done (France, Poland and Turkey) they might squeeze through, but it would be inept and they would have got hammered if they'd met anyone decent in the quarter finals.

There is no doubt that England do have good players, buy most of the time they're either limited (Shaun Wright Phillips, Heskey, Owen, Crouch,) havent reached their potential yet (Bentley, Lescott) and might not (Lennon, Defoe). no doubt that Rio, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Rooney are top class players. But there isnt a great deal of depth there. Look at how the defence just cracked when Rio or terry werent there. Thats one of the main problems.

As for Sven. The football England produced in Euro 2004 was probably the best I've seen produced by and England team in my time. Much better than anything produced by El tel, Hoddle, keegan or Mcclaren. Pity they couldnt keep it up..

Steve McClaren , now he is a cock!!

Statiscally, in competetive games, the most successful England Manager of all time.

Statistically, in competitive games, Sir Alf Ramsay is by far and away the most successful England manager of all time.

He won the World Cup.

Second to none.

Which bit are you missing, Liam? You're quoting facts which hold no bearing. If Capello say, wins, his first three competitive games on the trot, and has a 100% record should we then say he's now the most successful manager of all time? Because, statistically, he will be. But, of course, that statement would be utter bollocks.

EDIT: Hold on, where do you get your figures? If you look at THIS webpage - which admittedly doesn't split into competitive or friendly - Ramsay won 61% of his games, compared to Sven's 59%.

Sir Alf never qualified* for a World Cup!

In terms of winning games, Sven is the most successful.

*Well, apart from when England qualified for the 1970 World Cup by virtue of winning in 1966.

Top 8? England should be achieving much higher than that my friend!

I'd like to state that I am no fan of international football it is just my opinion that England had as good a squad as I can remember at the last euros/ world cup and that of course gives them no devine right to win a competition, but should have enabled them to compete and entertain something they did not - I do not contest Sven did a good overall job for England (heated drunken thoughts last night) and i do not have a xenophobic attitude towards foreign coaches, I am after all an Arsenal fan. I'm not interested in entering into a debate over England as I am not fussed how much they achieve club versus country everytime for me. My reasons for posting on this thread were purely on the Wright subject and disagreeing with the vitriol towards him. I do not agree with all that he says I agree what he said over Hargreaves was bollox, but the amount of nonsense that comes from all pundits is huge "you won't win anything with kids" anybody? Yes Wright doesn't back up his opinions with great swathes of persuasion, but he was employed by the bbc to be a fan and opinionated so if you find fault with that direct it at the bbc in general not Wright and some people did like his style others really didn't - that is life.

As a further point the notion that it is only british countries that have grievances over foreign coaches isn't true, england are one of the only supposed big nations who have gone abroad, I can't imagine France ever ever employing a non French coach. I don't have a problem with it as I have stated. In addition Greece won a major tounament without fantastic players in euro 2004 something that i'm sure is in many peoples minds when thinking about England and underachievement - does it really take such great players to win international tounaments? Were Italy man for man so superior than england on paper at the last world cup? That is why english football fans go over the top and keep dreaming of more because in theory it should be possible to achieve more - but for me I don't give a shit i'm going to sit backwith a cup of tea and Watch my sons video of Ian wright dinking it over two everton defenders heads before lifting it over neville Southall.

Fack's sake, there you go, ruining your argument. Graham Taylor is an absolute cunt and anyone who likes him is a proper flid.

Pleat's the man. Sorry, Pleat he da man.

Yeah, well, carry on.

It's the Watford connection what done it, admit it?

It was in various articles when he announced his resignation and after he had left. It was on Football 365 but i think its been taken down now.

I just worked it out myself. I included Home Championship for Sir Alf.

Sven, played 38. Won 26. Win rate of 68% Sir Alf. played 59. Won 32. Win rate of 54%

Any games that finished as a draw after ninety minutes I have counted as a draw.

And before anyone says Venables. I'm not counting The Umbro Cup.

His record is. Played 5. Won 2. Win rate of 40%

Liam, that's really not how football works though, is it?

Sir Alf won the World Cup.

Sven got England to two quarter-finals.

In anyone's book I fail to see how the latter is more successful.

Well, in terms of winning games, Sven is more Successful. In terms of winning trophies its Sir Alf first and Glenn Hoddle second.

Anyway, in the context of this thread, under Sven, England won two out of three games, and this wasnt good enough for Ian Wright, who took every shot at Sven he could to further his own agenda. Access is Power, and Power is influence. And he abused all of his. Hence why i'm delighted he's fucked off.
