Think this is a completely out of context statement to be brutally honest with you Boaty - the geezer was an alcoholic and banged up in prison at the height of his career, for a professional player at that time it couldn't have got much worse for him. Remember the press reports at that time? What were the bets back then that you would have put on him being where he is now?
You can't knock at all that he recovered from this and his addiction and went on to lead Arsenal to Premiership titles and other cup finals and turned his life around completely. Compare that to say Paul Merson who has continued to fall off the wagon or pick up different addictions through the years, or Paul Gascoigne who we continue to see crumble as we open the pages to the tabloid trash press. There is no reason why he would have been any different - except he had the will and determination to put it right.
When he quit Arsenal he went to Middlesex Uni down the road to do a sporting degree - it must have been weird being with people a lot younger than you and who had not had a career or the fame that he had.
He had another chance and he took it - and he's done an amazing job and is an example to all those that try and turn their life around - it ain't no easy shit where addictions are concerened - it ain't pretty either. He's done brilliant, he's done well at Portsmouth and I think he's going to be one of the best managers in this county.
Portsmouth have done good in his appointment, and it's without doubt the right decision and nothing to do with chances whatsoever!
The man was an abject failure as Wycombe Manager! The beginning of the end for Portsmouth methinks.
