Heard Mawhinney describe him as a footballing icon, imagine he was to WH fans, but surely even there he was overshadowed by Bonds, Hurst, Devonshire etc? He was boring!

He scored that goal against Hungary in Budapest in 1981 in a World Cup Qualifier when the ball got stuck in the goal stanction!!!! Er, that's it.
He did get about 50 England caps, and he did score the winning goal in an FA Cup Final!

He's always remained in the public eye though, hasn't he? Bit of a father figure. And genuinely seems to come across as a good old fashioned 'nice' guy, in a time when most people accept professional footballers are just cnuts.
There's a difference between good footballers and icons though isn't there? Gazza was an icon, Brooking was a good footballer. Always thought he got far too many caps anyway. The point I was making with Devonshire was that I don't think Brooking was iconic at national level, so take a step back and go to club level. I'd hazard a guess that West Ham fans would hold Devonshire higher as a club icon than Brooking.
Football stopped producing iconic figures in the eighties and they're all retired now.
Funnily enough,I always liked Brooking for some reason,

No,that was it,it was a written down question because of the pronunciation of Villa
surely by my memory brooking was a a 'good' player not a world class player ?.
