Rangers have been charged by Uefa for the conduct of their supporters during Wednesday night's Champions League encounter with Unirea Urziceni.

Clashes between Rangers fans and stewards during half-time in Romania have led to the action, which will be discussed at a meeting of Uefa's control and disciplinary body next Thursday. Seats were thrown from the Rangers support towards security officials.

"Rangers will be charged over the improper conduct of their supporters," a Uefa spokesman said. Worryingly for the Scottish club, they have already been the victim of Uefa fines twice in the last four years because of their followers' actions at European games.

"Obviously in any inquiry, the background of the club involved is taken into account," added the spokesman.

Unirea have escaped punishment and remain likely to do so, a matter which is sure to infuriate Rangers. The Ibrox club's chief executive, Martin Bain, said in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw that he would complain to Uefa regarding what he perceived as inadequate arrangements for the 2,000-strong visiting support. Eye witness accounts have endorsed Bain's theory.

"Unirea will not be charged," the spokesman said. "We are still waiting for some more information from the match delegate, which could change that, but probably not. It is unlikely."
