Concert Review Chicago 93
This was my first NewOrder concert since I was too young to see them during the 80's and I wasn't disappointed. I took my ex-girlfriend and we had a great time dancing and making out throughout most of the concert.
I originally remember being a little underwhelmed with their opener, "Ruined in a day", but in retrospect, I love that song and appreciate it now much more than I did that day...Things didn't really get moving for me until they played, "Dream Attack". I initially didn't recognize what they were playing, but when Bernard starting singing, I remember instantly kissing my girlfriend and going crazy throughout the song.
Another memory of this gig was when they played, "World", which, at the time, was my favorite song off their "Republic" album. I also remember a camera crew wandering the stage while they performed "World" and thinking that I was witnessing a future video. I also remember the entire crowd gyrating uncontrollably during "World"...What a great song. The only thing that was disappointing, was that I didn't have the closest seat in the house and I could see if they had a backup singer during that song singing, "That's the price of Love..."
Overall, the concert was sublime! I wish I could remember more from that concert, but I was in such a dreamlike state that I could barely remember the setlist after the concert. I do remember being a little disappointed that they didn't play longer, but from talking to the people in the parking lot and listening to the radio, this is not too uncommon for NewOrder to play short gigs.
Barney was wearing the same concert shirt that I had bought before the gig; the shirt with the colored barcode, which was very cool. He also went over to Gillian's synth and played some parts during "Blue Monday"...it seemed like some of what he was playing was almost nonesense, but it was cool nonetheless.
I will never forget this gig, because it has been the first and last time I have seen these guys play live. As far as I know, they have not played Chicago since. I surely hope they visit again.
