Peter Hook: An Evening Of Unknown Pleasures

Peter Hook - legendary bass-slinger with two of the most influential bands in British pop music history, Joy Division and New Order – has always been out there on his own somehow, as an artist, an icon and as the architect of his own oblivion. Having recently reinvented himself as a respected DJ, author and raconteur, Hooky tours intimate UK theatres this April / early May with Howard Marks in a conversational, musical and audience based show that sees the duo open up about their rock and roll shenanigans and pasts. Clutching some cherished memories and rock memorabilia, the celebrated musician, scribe and mouthpiece will be fessing up, pouring forth and telling all to Howard Marks, including the tragi-comic tale of the Manchester nightclub, The Hacienda, and the two seminal groups that paid for it. Hooky will also be playing various bass numbers, be open to a Q&A with audience members and plans to bring along unseen footage of Joy Division, New Order, The Hacienda, various out-takes from Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. A message from Bernard Sumner

"On behalf of the band and management I would like to apologize to all our fans who have been inconvenienced in any way by the cancellation of our US gigs. The band are very upset and surprised by this, as the fans obviously are. I am informed that this was caused by administrative problems with our visa application and at this late stage nothing can be done. We are trying our hardest to reschedule the gigs for spring next year and to add extra shows in the USA." Bernard Sumner.

Bad Lieutenant cancel US tours due to visa issues

From Badlieutenant.net: "It is with frustration and regret that Bad Lieutenant reluctantly announces the cancellation of the band’s four U.S. dates set to commence next week. The more stringent immigration laws and changing visa parameters resulted in an inability to process the necessary paperwork. “We were all so very excited about coming to the States to play our new music for our American fans,” said Bad Lieutenant’s Bernard Sumner, “and are extremely disappointed that on this occasion, we won’t have the opportunity to do so. We plan to reschedule the Chicago and New York shows along with some additional U.S. dates in Spring 2010. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.” The four Bad Lieutenant dates that have been cancelled are: November 18 – Park West (headline), Chicago, IL November 19 – supporting the Pixies in Chicago, IL November 21 – Webster Hall (headline), New York, NY November 23 – supporting the Pixies in New York, NY The concerts were in support of Never Cry Another Tear, Bad Lieutenant’s debut release which arrived in stories on Tuesday, November 10. The band features New Order/Joy Division’s Sumner, newcomer Jake Evans on vocals and guitars as well as guitarist Phil Cunningham and drummer Stephen Morris, musicians who helped make the legendary New Order a multi-Platinum-selling band and one of the most influential forces over the past three decades in the alt/rock/dance genres. New Order’s Sumner Talks Birth of Bad Lieutenant, Plans for U.S. Gigs

Two years ago New Order bassist Peter Hook quit the group and made it clear he wanted the band name retired. “You are no more New Order than I am!” he wrote in an infamous MySpace screed. “You may have two-thirds, but don’t assume you have the rights to do anything ‘New Order-ey,’ because you don’t.” The remaining members (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and New Order touring guitarist Phil Cunningham) took his advice, and re-dubbed themselves Bad Lieutenant. Their debut album Never Cry Another Tear is out October 13th. “The last New Order project was hard work,” Sumner says. “This was a happier atmosphere.” Sumner got the idea for the group’s name at Johnny Marr’s house. “I walked in and he was watching the scene in the movie Bad Lieutenant where Harvey Kietel is shooting the radio,” Sumner says. “I said, ‘What the fuck is this film?’ It was so gross and over the top.”

Never Cry Another Tear: The NOOL Review

As a New Order fan, you have to have mixed feelings when you are about to listen to Bad Lieutenant's first LP Never Cry Another Tear (released in UK on October 5th), you're sure you won't like it because it's not New Order and wish for them to come back, but then you watch the video for Sink or Swim, the album opener and first single off the album (which you can view here and suddenly it looks like it's New Order circa 2005 with the obvious missing bass god. And this is what you get from listening to the album, you find yourself expecting Hooky's bass at specific places in songs and it's nowhere to be found or it's replaced by guitar and you know it would have been amazing featuring Hooky instead. But, we had that feeling earlier with Electronic material, so it's not new for the New Order fan, while Monaco was Hooky's bass, and as close to Bernard Sumner's vocal David Potts can be, he's not Bernard Sumner, and it's nothing against David which I met and talked with when we collaborated on the Community tribute project. Overall, Never Cry Another Tear is exactly like all material coming from Bernard Sumner, you are not sure if you enjoy it, but the more you listen to it, the more you actually enjoy it. It's always hard to detect the input of other band members Phil Cunningham and Jake Evans, as it seems every song in there could have been written by New Order, but that was also the case with Johnny Marr's work with Electronic, we never really how which percentage is Bernard Sumner, but that album has obviously his touch all over it. You can't be a Manchester legend and let the others drive the show! For the New Order fan, if you followed the band on their UK tour like I did in 2006, you will maybe remember Jake Evans from the support band Rambo and Leroy, which was supporting New order in Wolverhampton. Many of us were in the pub at that time sadly.

The Hacienda: How Not To Run A Club - REVIEW

ISBN 978-1-84737-135-5 Release Date: 5th October 2009 Many aspects of this book will be familiar to so many people, from the startling danger tape-design cover, taken from Ben Kelly's Hacienda Club design, to the characters involved in the whole story. Familiar, but certainly not boring. It will be of great interest to fans of the Hacienda, New Order, Factory, the club scene in general... and quite possibly to Greater Manchester Police and HM Inspector of Taxes. If asked three years ago who might have written a book with such a title, you'd probably be thinking of a few names, such as Mick Middles, Paul Morley, Claude Flowers, even David Nolan. Although Claude Flowers was one of those who suggested that the book be written, it was Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order/Revenge/Monaco/Freebass) who was persuaded to take on the task. After reading it from cover to cover, it becomes apparent that he was not only the obvious choice, but also the best. Afterall, Hooky spent more time at the Hacienda and the Dry Bar than most and is therefore better qualified to comment, even if, at his own admission, much of the time spent there was slightly blurred by "overindulgence". http://www.fac51thehacienda.com

Peter Hook's "The Hacienda - How Not To Run A Club"

Peter Hook's "The Hacienda - How Not To Run A Club" and "Hacienda Acid House Classics" compliled and mixed by Hooky released this October with nationwide UK signing tour Oct 3rd to Oct 10th. A superclub before the term even existed, FAC 51 The Hacienda lasted fifteen years as the Mancunian musical institution, forming the epicentre of the city’s dynamic music, clubs and bands scene throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Now, some dozen years after misfortune, misjudgements and misbehaviour caused the ground-breaking Whitworth Street West venue to sadly close its doors on the dream, the characters and culture that created The Hacienda have ensured its legendary status, longevity, and appeal.
