I still have no clue why major record labels have not learned how to make money form Napster et al. Jesus Fucking Christ. The technology exists.

I laughed when I heard this story: On the one hand, the RIAA represents a business, a business that is losing money to illegal downloaders. On the other hand, considering the product they're turning out, it's no wonder people are looking for a different way of obtaining music. it's really a case-by-case thing, but the RIAA is going about it like it has to be one way or another with no middle ground. The answer lies somewhere in the middle between the industry on one side and the bootleggers on the other, but it's silly to think downloading will kill off the industry. Videotapes didn't kill movie theaters in the Eighties, recordable cassette tapes didn't kill record sales either. This "All or Nothing" approach the industry is taking has to be modified to allow for the fact that the technology isn't going away any time soon, but it doesn't have to be an antagonist of the recording industry.

but I can't see all the uproar...downloading tunes has actually encouraged me to purchase music from performers that I wouldn't have...I download a tune, if it's good, I buy the product...if it's crap, I delete the file!!!
It's just desperate action by a desperate industry, that has completely missed the (internet) boat, because they were hanging on to the immense profit margins of CD's.

you're forgetting, the record industry is in an extreme slump and file sharing is the perfect scapegoat.
i wonder why this slump is occurring. is it *really* file-sharing? or is it because people are discovering music out on smaller labels and spreading out their cash to these smaller labels.... ok, that was pretty biased. ;)
like we say in my country. what they´re doing is "covering their eyes to not see the sun". the sun will still be there. they just can´t go after everybody. not because they can´t do it but because it´s a worldwide phenomenon. they can´t go after me in Argentina with the USA laws. and internet doesn´t have a worldwide policy for these, and that´s the main issue. and by the way, this is not a war against downloaders but uploaders.
one more thing. record companies want to get money for records that they don´t even produce anymore!!! so they don´t take the investment risk and they even want to make profit! what´s the crime of downloading a couple of Milli Vanilli songs? are they editing Milli Vanilli´s records? no! so they´re not receiving any money for that anyway. i agree with them about the records that they´re still producing because you have the chance to buy them. but why complaining about out-of-catalogue records?
finally, they just don´t want to face we´re on a different era. we may be the last generation that has some kind of relationship with the object, the source of music (LP, CD, MC or whatever). we like to HAVE the object in our hands, see the sleeve, read the inlays, etc. the new generations don´t have that kind of relationship because they´ve grown in a total different era. any kid around the world may say to us: "why do you keep searching for vinyls and cds when you can download the songs from the net for free?". they don´t care about the object. and if they want to see the sleeves they just download them too. and record companies, instead of understanding this new era and acting to make profit of it, they want to stay where they are and not follow the evolution. they want to keep selling CDs and cassettes because it´s more comfortable and they don´t take any risks. but there´s only one truth: if they don´t evolve they´ll disappear. it has began already.
I think that little 12 year old girl should be thrown in prison for her actions.
I bet she smokes blow as well.
I thought that was really pathetic of them, picking on a little girl like that. Imagine what they'd do to us!
