Substance has it all. then you find out which tracks you liked more and then you search for the album that were released around that time. and then you start with studio albums.

I agree, or try to find the US version of (the best of) as a compilation. Low-life is a good choice for an album, but technique's also another.

Actually, I have to concur with the general sentiment towards Substance as a perfect "first buy". It's got just enough goodies to make you forget that they included "Shellshock" :D

Speaking of classical musicians doing New Order, I saw at Tower, before I left for college, a JD/NO tribute album by a string quartet that basically arranged the singles for such an arrangement. I was curious about its sound, especially BLT for some reason, but bought 316 instead.

I saw the same thing at the Tower in La Jolla; I was about to buy 316, since it was on sale for a dirt cheap price, but i had no money to buy it with :(

The problem with Republic is that after Technique, their best album by far, it took four years to create an album that was enjoyable at times, but mediocre

Although Republic has a few good songs scattered about, the amount of flat-out unlistenable songs (as opposed to just ho-hum songs) is in a higher proportion on this album than on any other, in my opinion.

I like Republic.. my first "new" New Order album...

But it doesn't compare to others, that's true.. but it still ranks high among albums.

It's not "crap", it's still better than any side project album.

even better than Twisted Tenderness? My only gripe with Twisted Tenderness is "Twisted Tenderness": Barney's singing as if he aspires to be the sixth Backstreet Boy.

I just bought Twisted Tenderness and cant stop listening to it....its GREAT!....but then again I like Republic also :shrug:

I started with the Substance 1987 compilation. At the time techno-pop was my thing (and it still is) so I immediately took to "Shellshock," "Thieves Like Us," and "Bizzare Love Triangle." Nice to have some instrumentals too. The older stuff on Substance took some time to grow on me.

My favorite New Order LP is Technique.

You might also like Electronic. My favorite of their albums is Raise the Pressure. I can listen to it over and over. It stays in my car.

Raise the Pressure? sure i has a few good tracks but it cannot compare to either of Electronic's other two albums. I can understand why you like the album, since it was partly produced by one of the members of Kraftwerk, but c'mon Twisted Tenderness is a gem compared to Raise the Pressure

Our difference of opinion is interesting Tristan, since I would easily take Electronic's debut album over Tristed Tenderness. In my opnion, on average, the songs and melodies of Twisted Tenderness aren't as catchy as the other two albums. To each his own.

I like the debut album a lot as well, almost as much as Twisted Tenderness, but Raise the Pressure, to me, seemed mediocre, and when do songs need to be catchy when they sound as great as "Vivid" does. If you want catchy just turn the channel to MTV ;)

Tristan, I do like "Vivid." Nice British pop.

To me what is great about New Order and Electronic is they have these few different styles that they always tend to revisit. The British pop sound, the dance sound, and the alternative rock sound. As with all of us, they have different moods and tastes.

Let me also add a couple points.

1.

One aspect of Raise the Pressure that I enjoy the most is the female harmony singing. Sometimes I think Bernard needs the support.

Moving over to New Order for a minute...I think it all comes down to personal taste but after hearing the update of "Sub-culture" on Substance 1987 (with added harmonies), I have no desire to listen to the original on Low-life. And I know some people do not like New Order to utilize female harmony singers. A friend of mine thinks it's cheesy. I can go on with my thoughts about this but I'm interested in your replies to far.

2.

I think it's all in the way you define "catchy." To someone catchy might equal cheesy or top 40. To me it means a good melody I can follow and enjoy over and over. I understand the difference between the MTV version of catchy and my version. I am here and not on a Matchbox 20 web site. ;)

Very lucky...I was looking for a Erasure CD (shut up Jeff!) and saw the place tag for Electronic.....and it was the only CD there!
