yes, I know it sounds like a good name for a band...but...

okay...so yes, it was Halloween...so maybe this will explain some of the raging stupidity I encountered today...

"Do you work here?"...no, I just thought the red shirt, khaki pants, and the Target name tag would help me pick up women, I hear they dig that kind of thing...

"What do you mean this is all of the Halloween stuff you have left? I need a costume!" Well, it is 9 o'clock on Halloween night, when did you get your first clue that you might want to think about getting a costume???

"Where is your beer and wine" Ma'am, we are in a dry area of Dallas County, that prohibits us from selling beer or wine..."No, I know I have bought it here before. Can I speak to a manager?"...ma'am, I am the Manager..."Are you the store manager?"...no ma'am, store managers do not close on Friday nights..."Well, I know I have purchased wine in this store before!" Okay, well, I have worked at this store since it opened, and I know for a fact that we have never carried beer or wine. Are you sure you aren't thinking of our store in Plano, at Park and the Tollway? "What, I thought I was at Park and the Tollway!" No ma'am, you are at Coit and Campbell...

now do you really think this woman needed anymore beer or wine???

God I love retail!!!

why is it a dry area - is that a religious thing?

Dave, not really sure why the City of Dallas has all these peculiarities as to where beer and wine can be sold. All I know is, it's annoying as can be...having to drive out of my way to pick up beverages...

Ah, the joys of customer-service in the retail field, I know all about the sort of things you're describing, Jeff. My all-time favorite is whenever we have a "2 for the price of 1" sale, someone invariably asks, "Does that mean I can get just one for half the regular price?"..... no, it means you GET 2 FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! You pay for one, and the other's free! :nonono:

Oh, and Sundays we can't sell beer thanks to "blue laws", so it's always fun to have to tell out-of-state tourists (almost all invariably Northerners) that we can't sell them any alcohol. The best part of the job, really makes up for all the shit you gotta go through with "help me find this" and "I thought it was on sale (because I saw a sign that was for another item/out of date, and am too stupid to read)"

Well, only get one then :thumb:

We've been doing this sale recently where you get THREE for the price of one, for some reason our customers haven't hit upon the idea of asking "if I just buy one, is it 1/3 the regular price?" :D

Three is too many...you can keep one if you like.Best i heard ......33p each or 3 for a £1 (100 pence).:D

Southern States nin the US of A can have fucked up booze laws. For example, some counties may be "dry" or not sell cold beer. Fortunately, I live in the Midwest where I can purchase all the cold beer I desire between the hours of 6am and 2 am Sunday through Saturday. I buy drugs between the hours of 2am and 6 am.

This reminds me of my summer job. At Haagen-Dazs, a sundae came with 2 wet toppings (whipped cream and a sauce) and a dry topping, and if you wanted it in a paper cup, it would be cheaper than if you bought it in a waffle-cone bowl type thing. Several customers wouldn't want a dry topping, and they'd ask if they could pay less for it, or else, they'd want something like M&M's, which count as a "wet" topping since they cost more to purchase, instead of ordinary peanuts, which means I'd have to charge them an extra 25 cents, which really annoyed them. Then, there'd be customers who'd want a sundae in the waffle bowl but would want no dry toppings and would want me to charge it as a regular sundae in a paper cup. And, since the manager was never at the store, I'd always have to explain that we can't take off for a sundae just because you don't want a 25-cent topping. Really, I'm so, so, so glad I'm no longer working there.

oi...how did I forget this one?!?!?!

after the store closed, we had to go gather up all the buggies off the parking lot...I opted to go gather up the strays at the remote edges, and as I walked up to one of them, I noticed that the engine of the Blazer that I was approaching was running...then as I come around to the front of the vehicle, I notice the windows are a little foggy...I peer in, and what do I get???

a nice view of a young lady using her mouth to, uhm, well, certainly you get the picture...I take out my keys and knock on the window...

you have never, ever, seen such a look of bewilderment and shock on two faces at the same time...I tell them to get off my parking lot, and well, that was the end of a loverly day...I know there is at least one guy out there that really hates my guts today!!!

Possibly the most memorable run-in I had with offenders of the "dry Sunday" rule were two chicks from California who hadn't heard of our blue laws, and tried to talk the cashier and myself into letting them go ahead and get the beer. Much to our credit, neither I nor the cashier in question relented, and I could tell the girls were getting quite upset. I had been the one to bring up the "no alcohol on Sunday" in the first place (I know this particular cashier would've said something if she'd noticed it first, but alas it was I who spoke up), so I wasn't really surprised when they glared at me when I took the beer back to the shelf. When I returned, the girls were still loading their cart, and I stepped back to let them work out their anger by slamming their purchases into the buggy. The cashier and I described how angry the girls were to our co-workers once the two were out of earshot, and I wondered aloud what the chances were I might be run down if I went out to the parking lot while they were still on the premises (and presumably still pissed at me in particular). So, of course, I was told at that moment by a higher-up who had missed the conflict to retrieve buggies at that moment, and I went about it cautiously, keeping an eye out for the car that they would surely use as their murder weapon. Needless to say, no such vehicular manslaughter took place (I wouldn't be here to talk about it otherwise, right?), but I'm always careful to avoid pissing off idiots trying to buy beer on Sundays....I just wait til they're gone before I laugh about it :thumb:

California chicks have to get their alcohol somewhere. Here they get it from older frat guys or stealing from their yuppie parents' alcohol cabinets

Countless times in my working career, I have thanked God I do not have to deal with customers. Mostly because of reports from people I know who are unfortunate to have to deal with this crap, and also because my first job involved it, albeit only on the phone. There are several examples here which will make me thank Him even more.

The customer's always right? Bollocks, the employees who have to deal with them deserve medals at the very least!

Unless the customer's me, obviously, I'm very.............

appreciative.;)

Indeed, employees deserve medals. This summer, a fight broke out in our store between 2 guys from north new jersey and 2 guys from Philadelphia, and the police, although standing outside, decided not to help us at that point (although after 11:30 curfew they came in to round up teenagers still hanging around). While 3 of my co-workers stood in the back room, my supervisor and I happened to be out front by the ice cream cases, about 3 feet away from the fight, and just to get the four guys out of the store, my supervisor asked to me to get him a broom and he pretty much threatened to beat the crap out of them with it. Of course, he appeared a lot more threatening than I did, considering I'm barely 5'6 and 130lbs and he was over 6 feet and about 100 pounds heavier. Of course, if the police had actually done their job, breaking up fights instead of telling teenagers to go home... then again, Philly cops are notoriously bad.

In Quebec since this year, you can have alchool delivered to your house when you order food... don't know if that is done somewhere else, but still...

And there is that very stupid law where you can't buy alchool after 11pm up to 8am.. I have no idea why it would be illegal to buy beer at midnight when you can buy 200 beers the same day and keep them to drink them after 11pm..

Anyways...

I terms of stupidity, being a clerk in a video store for 8 years tought be you need to keep horny kids off the adult section if you don't wish to clean up stuff in that section.... :\puke:

While your stories are funny, I'm getting a bigger kick out of the fact that you Southerners call shopping carts buggies.
