Granted, Al Sharpton is kinda funny, but this is "stunt casting" written all over it. Does anyone else think the poor, old bastards will realize just what a pathetic shell of its former self "Saturday Night Live" has become? Lorne, baby, you've got more than enough money! Give it a rest already! 
The problem is the awful cast that's still there; when darrel hammond and jimmy fallon are the only half-way decent, funny cast members; there is a serious problem. Also the writing for the recent years has become unbearable.

I've always been ambivalent about SNL, on the one hand I remember the classic years (which for me were the 86-94 cast, and some shows in the late Nineties) and can't outright hate the show for that. But because Lorne Michaels fits the bill as far as "don't know when to quit", the show is a ghost of its former self. The jokes (what few there are) are incredibly lame, the hosts are often 15-minute wonders or "flavor of the month" public figures (is it too much longer before they ask Steve Bartman, the world's most infamous Cubs fan, to be the host?), and I couldn't care less for the alleged "talent" currently on display. Plus, where SNL was once daring and contreversial, now it's just buddying up to whatever sentiment is popular right now. The fact that they seem afraid to piss off the Bush administration (at a time when we NEED comic voices like SNL to question what the hell is going on and why) is a goddam disgrace. 
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong :D
I think having Al Sharpton as host is hysterical. That guy's just a big chubby bowl full of funny.
I love how he is slamming Howard Dean in the debates; damn that hypocrite Dean really irks me, but not as much as Wesley Clark annoys me; c'mon how the f*** is he a Democrat.

I watched the part of the debate last night where Sharpton took him to task for the campaign Dean's running down here (I haven't kept up with what's going on, but apparently Dean's trying to appeal to the "lifelong Republican...well, since 1968, at least" Southern set). He and Edwards ("Who?") made Dean look like a horse's ass, which is good because, while I can't help but fall a little under his "spell", I can't shake the feeling that he's all talk and no show. I wonder if any of the other candidates can emerge to do a better job.
And I'm with you on Clark, he's nothing but a poseur. I think he's sincere in his critique of the mess currently known as "Iraqi War Part II: This Time It's Personnal", but I don't think he's a serious contender (He's a more attractive Dennis Kucinich, in other words :D )
There are debates? All I've seen is the new jailbait video. But you must be right Trev-- how can Wes Clark-- a candidate with actual military experience-- stand a chance in a campaign against the chicken hawk in the White House, whose military experience appears to be limited to photo ops off San Diego?

I haven't seriously watched SNL since Belushi, Murray, Aykroyd, Radner, etc..... except for times when groups like the Pogues are the musical guests, though I how I missed the episode when Fear was on remains a mystery to me.
Whatever reruns of the later years that I can I catch on Comedy Central or E! definitely have their moments, so I'm not gonna totally bash the show. The skit that has made me laugh the most of fairly recent past is the skit where Jerry Seinfeld is a history teacher.
they started showing these on paramount in the uk - saw one with steve martin hosting, belushi, murray, akroyd etc were regulars.
have to say it had not aged at all well, didnt seem that funny at all.
not slagging them off - steve martins films are amongst the funniest ive seen & bill murray is always value, but the show itself was a bit pants

The original SNL was funny, sharp, satirical, and a hell of a lot better than it is now. Maybe you're too young, maybe you're not American...I dunno....but I've watched it since the 1st season and when it's been good it couldn't be touched. It was a different type of humor that didn't suck up to the lowest common denominator. They weren't afraid to have off the wall hosts and they didn't care who they made fun of. Heck....they even had a some of the Pythons on as hosts. To this Python fan it was ecstacy. They even had Kate Bush on as musical guest back then. These days it's the latest 15 minute celebrity as either the host or "musical" guest. I still watch it hoping for something cool but usually I end up watching something else.
Not too young, but not american either.
I'm not saying it wasn't funny back in the day but that the humour has not aged at all well.
