Just a word about the rules, was watching some of Green Bay against er, someone else late last night(it was 0-0 for ages, if you know the game I mean). When a ball is thrown and hits the ground it seems to be deemed dead and yet Favre threw a pass that slipped out of his hands and that was deemed a fumble, so the ball was in play, is that right? Was wondering if only the quaterback can throw the ball and if he has to throw forwards and overarm all the time? Can the ball be passed more than once? Oh and I fell asleep so don't know what the score was but has a game ever ended goalless?

The ball is dead when it hits the ground during a forward pass. If a quarterback drops the ball before his arm starts the forward motion to pass then it is considered a fumble and the ball can be recovered by either team.

The ball can only be passed forward once during a play and the person throwing the ball must be behind the line scrimmage (the point where the ball started from). There is no limit to how many times a ball can passed backwards to another player during a play. I hope this helps you out.

What a shite game. Do they ever play it without all that poncey padding ?

It does not seem to bother us Americans, since American football is the most popular sport by far.

Cheers, so in effect they could develope plays were the ball is moved forward in similar style to rugby? Has anyone ever tried?

The worst competition to watch on tv is NASCAR, then golf, then soccer. That is my trinity of sports boredom

I know that MArtin Johnson (Englands Rugby captain) played with the 49ers on their warm ups (spring something or other they call it) for fun as he is a massive fan. I also know of a few American football players who refused to play rugby as padding wasn't worn & they were fearful of the injuries with the high impacts

mind you they do wear a bit of padding in rugby these days anyway....

there is NOTHING wrong with NASCAR...and come now, surely the most boring thing to watch on TV is when ESPN decides to show us people playing POKER!!!!! :WTF:

That, sir, is the greatness of Texas Stadium. This is the home of the 5 time Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. :D

There would be catastrophic player injury every game if it were not for "all that poncey padding".

The size and strength of the players and the speed at which the game is played always has and always will warrant the use of pads and helmets.

That would be great! However, even if the Cowboys do win the NFC Championship, I think the Chiefs in the AFC will have something to say about the Super Bowl.

I think the Chiefs will come up short; there have been other great Chiefs teams that have choked in the playoffs; I think the Titans are the best in the AFC

You're right of course - I watched some the other day and some of it was frightening....250lbs hitting 250lbs at speed, something has to give.

but doesn't that type of thing happen quite often in Rugby?!?!

Isn't 250 pounds on the smallish side for these guys?

You're not kidding. 250 is getting to be small for a linebacker these days. Heck, it's almost small for a SAFETY!

precisely.

its the equivalent of running into a brick wall at speed according to a recent Times Sports supplement advert

And I just noticed, but Tristan's avatar IS NOT Texas Stadium...the hole in the roof is WAAAAAAAAAAY too large...

Seem to recall that there was one sportstalk host, Papa Joe Chevalier on the old One On One Network, who would call the Cowboys stadium "God's Spitton".

I heard that Papa Joe was known more for his cajun recipes than for his sports takes.

He certainly could be; haven't heard him in a long while, so I don't know for sure. I just remember laughing at him while he ranted about whatever, though he wasn't nearly as obnoxiously funny as the clown who followed him, Arnie Spannier, I think.

You are so right about Arnie. He was just about unlistenable.

Do you like Rome?

I listen to him from time to time, we kind of change the radio stations at work on a near-daily basis, but if something big happened in sports, it's a decent bet that we'll be listening to him. I love his attitude with the Buckeye fans who are clamoring to play in the national championship game, despite not having beaten that team from up north. Until they do, I just don't wanna hear the Suckeyes, errrrr, Buckeye, fans complain about anything (I deal with a motor mouth Buckeye fan twice a week, so it's always fun to trade barbs with him; I still think USC would roll Ohio State straight up).

I'm certainly not a clone, but a lot of his takes are right on, at times though he just seems a bit too full of himself and his cleverness, though anybody who can let people like Otis from Austin call in is ultimately all right by me  :thumb:

Sorry though Butch, I gotta say, for this Saturday: HAIL TO THE VICTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, even though it won't matter anyway, Oklahoma will roll whoever they play (hope that doesn't upset y'all in Texas too much, though I'm certain the Horns and Aggies will attest to that)

You got that right; how else would one account for that dramatic release of emotion by that Aggie defender on that critical goal line stand late in the fourth that prevented an 84-0 result, while all of the Sooners fell over themselves trying not to score? :skeptic:
