Based on the same idea as Sporting Highlights, this time you can pick events you have seen on Video or TV. Events that maybe you were too young to be at, or if you were old enough, not able to get to the event.

1, Snooker World Final 1985 Dennis Taylor 19 Steve Davis 18 A thrilling end to an unbelievable final, with the scores tied in the last frame, it was all down to who potted the last ball on the table. I was 10 years old when this final was on, and my dad let me stay up to watch it, I think it finally finished just after midnight.

2 Wimbledon Final 1985 Boris Becker winning Wimbledon as a 17 year old, and being the first unseeded player ever to do so. His athleticism was second to none, and it was great watching him throw himself around the court to get to every ball. I think it was Kevin Curran he beat in this final.

3 Thriller in Manilla 1975 Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frasier, an incredible fight with both men knocking fcuk out of each other. Ali won when Frasier failed to get off his stoll at the start of the 15th and final round. There were many Ali fights I could have picked, but this would have to be my favourite.

4 Scotland v England 1967 Scotland travel down to Wembley to play the World Champions, and duly oblige in showing the English how to play, beating them 3-2. Jim Baxter actually sat on the ball taunting the English players to "Come an get it" and the Scotland strikers were taking the ball off of each other trying to score. I know this will probably upset a few of the locals on these pages, but how could I NOT add it.

5 World Cup Final 1970 Simply the best national side that has ever been, they could possibly have given the Lisbon Lions a game......maybe not;) Brazil tore Italy to pieces in a magical display of controlled attacking football. Who could forget Jarzinhio's goal? Superb.

6 Maradona 1986. Can one man win you the World Cup? YES. People will always debate about who was the greatest Pele or Maradona :nod: I just couldn't pick between the two myself - they were both one in a million. But Maradona's displays in the 1986 World Cup were just scintilating! Look at the Belgium game to see how to take the piss and bamboozle defenders, such elegance and great movement he had for such a stocky lad and his finishing was also of the highest quality. Just look at the goal against England, has there been a better individual goal scored?.......as for the second one;)

7 European Cup Final 1960 Real Madrid 7 Eintracht Frankfurt 3 Another game often talked about as being the best ever. And the fact it is the highest scoring final ever played would make it entertaining to say the least. Another thing to remember.....Frankfurt had beaten Rangers 14-2 on aggregate in the Semi-Final, so just how good were Real Madrid!?!

That'll do for now. Obviously there's loads of choices for Celtic games. Nice thread ShugZV, here are my top five, a bit light on the words but nevertheless classics:

"The Rumble In The Jungle", Ali vs. Foreman in Zaire 1975, when everyone thought George was unbeatable. They were wrong.
Headingly 1981 - Botham and Wills turn around a losing position with the most exciting cricket any of us have witnessed. Even better when you know that Lillee and Marsh backed England at 500-1 on the 4th day.
Barbarians (i.e. British Lions) vs. All Blacks 1971, Cardiff Arms Park and, courtesy of Gareth Edwards, "The Try".
Brazil, World Cup 1970. The greatest team playing the greatest game.
British Lions in South Africa 1997, Guscott's drop goal, Rodber's hitting, Johnson's leadership. Need I say more?

I could add Chelsea's winning of the Full Member's Cup Final in the 80's, but that would be tongue in cheeck (sort of) and England winning the rugby World Cup in 2003, but that hasn't happened yet.

i couldn´t be at the two tournaments Ferrocarril Oeste won in Argentinian league (82 and 84). i was too young and didn´t have a father supporting the same team. in fact on 84 we won River Plate the final (my dad´s team). but i remember listening to the radio and wanting to be there: 3-0 away, 1-0 home. oh boy, what a great moment for a small club supporter!
both championships of Argentina in world cups. the first one was at home (78) but i was only 2 years old. the second one i saw it all by TV dying to be on the Azteca stadium on the final vc Germany. :D

Robbie Reinelt's equaliser for Brighton at Hereford, '96. Having been 13-odd points adrift at the bottom of the third, we'd scraped ourselves ahead of Hereford on goal difference and had to play them in the last game. 1-0 down at half time and staring the non-league in the face, up popped Robbie to literally save the day.
James Hunt winning the Formula 1 title in the pissing rain at Japan.
Germany 1 England 5. Nothing more to add on that one.

It has to be:

1- France beating New Zealand in the semi final of the RWC in 1999

2- Beefy Smashing the Aussies around Headingly

3- Lions beating South Africa in 1997. Second Test in particular.

4- England 1-0 Argentina 2002

5- Germany 1-5 England 2001

6- When Europe won the Ryder cup last year. Fantastic.

And as i cant think of any more at this time...

7- England 2-0 Scotland. 1996. And 2000. :evil4:

the 'rumble in the jungle' took place in 1974, not 1975. october 30, to be exact. i was born 3 days later.:D

and goran ivanisevic's win over pat rafter in the 2001 wimbledon men's finals was one of the greatest sporting moments i've ever seen!

almost forgot when duke beat kentucky in the 1992 NCAA basketball eastern title match. grant hill throwing the ball across the court to christian laettner, who scored with less than one second to go, clinching the win for duke. i jumped so high with excitement after that shot i hit my head on the ceiling of my room!

Excellent choice indeed there, Ms. Wood :clap: Swear to God, I also jumped up high, but I only scaped my knuckles against the textured ceiling :lol: Certainly the best basketball game I've ever seen, I was a Duke fan before the game, but it was a shame that Kentucky had to lose, both teams played at a very high level sweetened by the fact that it was the NCAA tournament.

As we are so oftened reminded, Christian was perfect that day, 10 of 10 from the field, and 10 of 10 from the free throw line; one miss and Duke doesn't even get that far.

Go to hell Carolina; Naismith invented basketball, not Dean Smith ;)

Remembering an event for the Sporting Lows topic reminded me of one for here:

Manchester derby, November 1994. United 5 city 0. Watched on TV, and Kanchelskis scoring his 3rd, United's 5th, resulted in me going loopy, jumping onto my bed..... and falling straight through it. :rolleyes:

There are too many highlights from afar to list here so I'll limit it to 3 more.

European Cup Winners' Cup Final, 1991: Man Utd 2, Barcelona 1. First time I saw my team win a European trophy, Hughes' 2nd just beautiful. As was Blackmore's goal-line clearance in the dying minutes.
Aston Villa v Oldham May 1993: Oldham won 1-0, ending Villa's title chances, meaning that, at 23 years old, I could finally say I supported the champions. The final whistle that day saw me sobbing like a child in front of my TV. Happy days!
European Cup Final 1999: Every single day since that night, at least once, I think of Solskjaer putting the ball in the net. A sporting high I doubt will ever be beaten.

it's a shame laettner lost it after college. all the glory went to the second best player of the class of 1992--shaquille o'neal. i know laettner did not want to go to minnesota (despite being a huge prince fan), but what the hell really happened to his career? didn't he end up in canada, or something...i don't follow basketball anymore. not to mention that i had a huge crush on him!

He's not the only Duke player not to make it in the pros; Danny Ferry, Bobby Hurley, Brian Davis, Wojo, Chris Collins, Jason Williams, Grant Hill, Alaa Abdelnaby, the jury is still out on Dunleavy.

Laettner still plays in the NBA, for Washington, and helped lead the Wizards to victory over the Jail Gangsters the other day, though hardly anybody here cares anymore. He's bounced around the league with a few teams, can't remember 'em all, one of the less amusing nights of my life was spent at some courtside seats between the Blazers and T-Wolves, when Christian had long hair and a head band; I only heard "Hey Christian, ever hear about Super Cuts?" about 1,001 times that night. :nonono:

See, I'm still useful to somebody!

Back from injuries again? Seems like half of his career has been on the injured list, and I was also pointing out that there has been a tendency of Duke players, who excel in college, not to do as well in the pros, though I will admit that Grant has done the best of 'em all.

It'll be sad if Orlando loses McGrady, after having lost Shaq, and that whole Eastern division in the NBA is something else; I do believe the leader has a losing record. :nonono:

Oh my god. I can't believe you've mentioned that first one. Although I am a Forest supporter from birth, I've followed Hereford's ups and downs since being at school there. That has to be one of my worst sporting memories!

Hopefully Hereford may recover this year and get back into the league...
