Durutti Column

I went to Manchester to see the Durutti Column on Saturday, at the grandly named "Academy 3" (which turned out to be a black painted room with a sticky floor at the top of the Student's Union building at the University).

Did anyone else from NOOL go?

They were supported by a string quartet called Litmus who opened with a cover of BLT and later on covered LWTUA along with sundry other Manchester tracks.

For anyone interested, the DC set consisted of some new stuff off this year's great "Someone Else's Party" album, plus classics like "Never Known", "The Beggar", "The Missing Boy", "Jacqueline", etc. Vini was great, very self-deprecating and Bruce Mitchell (drummer) was really going for it.

The most amazing thing was how one guitar can be made to sound like about three, just by being played better than I thought possible. Awesome.

All in all a cracking gig, although the two and a half hour train journey home (normally takes one and a half tops) with the pissed couple shagging in the toilet kind of took the edge off it slightly!

If you get the chance (I've only waited about 14 years) go and see them.

I've never seen them live, so your lucky. All i have is The Return Of The Durutti Column and Someone Else's Party (i had to wait 3 months to get that on import). Vinni is an underated genius.

i've got LC reissue on Factory Once and Obey the Time on Factory. Both sweet albums. I also have the Japanese Concert from 85 on DVD...Domo Arrigato i think. It's way better quality than PFD and they were both done around the same time. his work on Late Night, Maudlin Street off of Viva Hate is gorgeous as is Alsation Cousin and a few other Moz tunes from VH.

I'm dying to get the first few Reissues esp. The Return Of and Guitars and Other Machines..

Did they play 'Smile In This Crowd'? i love that song...

Why does everyone feel compelled to like all Factory Bands,? Most were talentless under achievers.

I don't feel compelled. Durutti Column are excellent so :p

And I'm sorry, but WFL by the Mondays and Partyline by Stockholm Monsters are fuckin' amazing records.

Factory released some total shite (Adventure Babies/Quando Quango spring tom mind) by in their early heyday they had some great acts. Just for clarification, I like Crispy Ambulance, Factory era James and Section 25 too. So there.

(No "Smile in the Crowd" by the way.)

Flight and Wild Party by ACR are classics, it's the Wake I really think are shite.

I'm not that much of a completist to enjoy everything on the Factory label, and if I didn't like it, then it was sold, like that US compilation album Young, Popular and Sexy. Rather liked the James singles, but stuff like the Railway Children and the Wake didn't do much for me.

I saw the DC in Edinburgh in August, they were predictably excellent. That is all.

EDIT: Ooh, I never noticed this was my 200th post. I do wish I'd said something more profound. Or even New Order-related.

I was at the Durutti Column gig too, along with some other Neworder regulars.

I didn't realise Domo Arigato was out on DVD - is this a Japan-only release?

Actually, you wouldn't need to wait that long to see them, I reckon any train from Leeds at around 2.30 in the morning would provide similar cabaret.

The perenially sad part about FACTUS 17 was that it promimently features "NO NEW ORDER" printed on the back of that horrid-looking sleeve. And that was my introduction to the rest of Factory's catalog...

I also hear that the Column -may possibly- tour the US in 2004, which would be only the second US tour of thers, the first being in 1986.
