He was also a hairdresser. And never set foot in this country till he was 32.
Not a comedian neither. He was a comedic actor. Couldn't tell a joke or improvise on sketches for love nor money, could only follow a script.
I read his biography on me honeymoon last year.
Had an eye for the ladies though!

Quite good I thought, interesting that in all the later Carry On's ( well Most ) he was called Sid!.
I have 2 intersting documentaries of him on video ( must put em on dvd )
He claimed to get that face from fairground boxing, but in fact had bad acne as a kid.
He has that great quality that you only have to see him and you start to smile ( similar to Juliete ) Yak Yak Yak Yak

You are correct he was South African, however his laugh more than made up for that fact.

the book is fictional, but mentions him several times & kenneth cole - from a film they did together called "what a carve up" also featuring shirley eaton (the bird painted gold in goldfinger)
one of the characters meets him & talks to him about hancock & he's not best pleased.
Yeah Hancock sacked him. Sid was becoming more popular than him and Hancock didn't like it.
Sid never really got over that.
