Well today as I was going back home with a friend of mine, he said, "Hmm... you know Mark E. Smith of the Fall actually never sings, just listen more carefully, he mummbles more his way..." And I didn't accpet it and as we came home we strarted to listen to Fall albums and try to see where he would really "sing", ha. Well, yeah aside from non-Fall songs like Victoria it seems to be true....
And so what? Nothing, he is ever-kool.
Just the funny thing I have never analyzed his "singing", so I was just kinda confused by my friend today.
Could Mark. E. Smith ever sing?

Cheers Green, I've been trying to forget about that painful sound these last 20 years ! Doktor Annabel lies !
I think hed be quite offended that people think he sings, hed be like "you callin me a fookin puff mate?"
anyway The Fall, "FELL" ages ago in terms of quality.

Oh no no no. Two of their last three albums ("The Unutterable" and "TRNFAFCOTC") have been up there with their absolute finest, in my opinion. And the Christmas single was a cracker, if you'll pardon the pun. If the new New Order material is as vintage as any of those, I'll be a very happy man.

It's nice you still track down their latest releases. I mean your heart is still beating.

We are trying to get on the bill for that one - have mailed the band to ask them if they want an opener. Most of their gigs have three two supports already, and I'm fooked if we're going up to Scotland to support anyone !

Nice one! That would be excellent. Both nights?
Listened to a compilation tape of Fall single tracks I'd made years ago, there's a track called Entitled that's pretty close, in terms of MES, for 'normal' singing.
Funky high bass line as well, one of their better efforts. That period was one of the best for writing good songs - the Brix influence.
Mark E Smith, can he sing, NO, can he ramble on endlessly, YES. Are the Fall the greatist living English band around, YES.
Mancunian (well Salfordian) contemporaries of Joy Division/New Order. First single "Bingo Master's Breakout EP" released late 1978. Since which 3,000 line up changes and about 30-odd albums. Makes you really realise how laughable NO's work-rate is. Overseen by obersturmbahnfuhrer Mark E Smith, the only one still in from the original band, i.e. he is The Fall, along with whatever gang of brickies he has as a backing band this week.
Check out the best Fall album thread and also their good website http://www.visi.com/fall/news/fallnews.html. John Peel's favourite band, you either love 'em or hate 'em. An acquired taste.
Commercial over.
