Indian football clubs face ban after 116-goal spree

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Two Indian football teams each competing for promotion to a premier league scored 116 goals between them in separate matches after their opponents had clearly been paid off.

The clubs in western India's Goa state, Curtorim and Wilfred, could be banned for life alongwith their opponnets after notching up basketball-like scores of 61-1 and 55-1 respectively in a bid to sneak past each other, newspapers reported Wednesday.

The Goa Football Asociation (GFA) had ordered simultaneous kick-offs for the two matches played at different venues Tuesday night, as the team scoring the most goals would be promoted to the premier league.

But club officials posted at the two grounds kept in touch with each other by mobile telephones to report progress.

With the matches clearly fixed, play turned into little more than target practice as the two teams showered goals almost every minute-and-a-half, thanks to their respective weaker opponents liberally feeding them loose balls.

Even the goalkeeper of one of the teams joined in the scoring feast, the Indian Express said.

GFA secretary Savio Nessias suspended all four clubs, saying "they made a mockery of football."

"We had anticipated foul play and had sent observers to both matches."

Fans in Goa are mad about football and the state has some of the best football clubs in the country.

Two years ago in Calcutta, another football-crazy city, a team won 114-0 to avoid relegation. But it was not banned since officials "did not find enough evidence" of foul play

Is this the same Heskey who starred in the 5-1 demolition of Germany and had a decent World Cup?

Three games out of 200 ? No wonder England are still shite and Liverpool are an average mid-table side if Heskey is a barometer for success.....

When I was in Antigua in June last year, the taxi driver tok us past his family house and proudly told us that the great England star Emile Heskey's family had lived there before moving to Barbuda and then England, he was gobsmacked when I said they could have the fucker back on a free, then agreed with me after a few seconds !

The one you're presumably gonna offload once Cisse joins the club though?!

Agreed, he gets a hard time. Every team needs a fall guy, sadly he's become England's stooge. People often have a pop when he's done little wrong.

Aye, but you can count the things he's done right on the fingers of one hand. For such a big guy he's a bit of a lightweight in the challenge - spends more time on the deck than a shite boxer !

I'm rather hoping Cisse is better and certainly I'd sell Heskey before Baros. I think if Baros was fit we'd have taken the money from Middlesbrough. He's had some excellent games and I've read the next day journo's scring him 4/10 and slagging him. His scoring record is a bit better than Rooney's this year as well.

A better scoring record than Mickey Rooney ! My God he must be good. :D
