Velvet Underground: peel slowly and see........

Allright, first ever poll by yours truly, and since NO and JD have covered Sister Ray, thought I'd place this in the general chat forum.

The Velvets get a fair amount of attention from the people on this forum, so it'd be of interest to see what side of them that is preferred: the softer and slower numbers like Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, etc, the uptempo rockers like Beginning To See The Light, Waiting For The Man, What Goes On, etc, or the noiser ones, such as Murder Mystery or European Son.

This is also my 2000th post, so thanks to everyone I've been in contact here with, and even those I haven't, it's definitely the best NO site on the web.

Nice one Allan, there's a lot of people got to 2000 on here, but few have packed as much quality into their posts. Always a good read, always switched on. May there be many more.

reminds me of drinking cheap Mexican beer whilst riding around in LA with a friend.

Saw LOU REED at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL a few years back.Great concert although he speaks to the audience NOT at all.Also because of the BOWIE connection ,another great artist IMHO,i have had to go with WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT.Excellent song but so many of these are good it is a hard choice. Congratulations on staying around so long and keep up the good posts. Regards ROCKET MICK

Very tough question, but I went through a bit of a White Light/White Heat phase a few weeks ago, so I'll go with the title track from that...

Too difficult for me to choose between Sister Ray, Venus In Furs, Heroin, Waiting For The Man & White Light-White Heat.

*Just like Barney in 1981! :) I've always thought saying Venus In Furs would have been too obvious, also the whole White album has that cool noise chic and Sister Ray was covered by Joy Division, and what about Heroin... BUT yes, I must surrender, Venus In Furs is definitely their best, a masterpiece really... I've always liked it, but it's never been so important in my life until New Order put it on Back To Mine, it made me rediscover the song, especially in that context, surrounded by other artists... they're good, the most of them, but Venus In Furs is outstanding... those strings, those lyrics, and how Lou sings... it's magic... very few songs in music history have touched these heights... don't you get goosebumps when he whispers the chorus? I am tired... I am weary... I could sleep - a thousand years A thousand dreams... that would awake me... different colours - made of tears.

Pity I couldn't pick them all. Lou Reed's a fuckin genious and no fuckin mistake!

Picked up the Quine tapes box set yet Tabsy? The three versions of Sister Ray run 24:03, 38:00 and 28:43, imagine being in an audience and being treated to that?

Consumer alert: I did pick up the Bataclan 72 acoustic CD a month ago, with Lou, Cale and Nico, and it's pretty good. Decent sound as the VU go unplugged, on this one, I prefer the Cale stuff, including an amusing ditty called The Biggest, Loudest, Hairiest Group Of All, over the other stuff. Nico sounds a bit tired, and I'm not that big a fan of a harmonium. Still, for Velvet fans, it's a lot easier to acquire now than when it was just a hard to find boot.

My cousin got this and (shame on me!) I just didn't find it compelling enough to get myself after a few listens. I'd rather get Live at Max's Kansas City. But it's possible I could change my mind and pick up the Quine box someday

I've gone for "other" as The Gift is my favourite. Venus In Furs and Sunday Morning are close though, but Mr Cale's spoken word thing on The Gift makes me smile every time I listen to it.
