the Prisoner

Don't know if this has been done on here previously, but is anyone into the cult 60's TV series the Prisoner? I've been introduced to it recently and am steadily working my way through all 17 episodes. I recommend it to you all. It's surreal. It stars Patrick McGoohan who plays a character called Number Six, held captive in a strange village. Number Two (the boss) tries all matter of ploys to try and get the secrets out of Number Six's head (why he resigned from a top ranking job in the secret service). Each episode is a self-contained story. Great stuff.

I used to be - what put me off was joining the appreciation society...it's full of strange people who inhabit a fantasy world where they seem to believe all this stuff is true. The magazine they produced was ok for a few issues but became incredibly monotonous - there's only so much you can say about 17 episodes after all! I guess the programmes are still good it's just the obsessives that I don't like!

when i lived in scotland i went out with a guy who introduced me to the show. he wanted to retire to portmeirion and walk around all day in those funny capes....

i think it's more interesting if you get chased around the beach by white balloons.

Apparently if you are a real saddo, you can go along to one of the conventions and take part in a human chess game, as featured in the episode; Checkmate. I'd like to visit Portmeirion - it looks great! I think the big white balloon; Rover, spoils it somehow. Even if it was the 60's.

I first saw this programme as a 4 year old in 1967 and the only reason I can remember it is because of that Rover balloon! It's one of my earliest television memories (along with the Daleks, Cybermen, Ice Warriors and Yeti from Doctor Who!) so I can't agree that it spoils the programme... The main hotel burnt down many years ago so Portmeirion doesn't look quite as it did when The Prisoner was made. It was also used as the location for a Doctor Who story in the 70s. The appreciation society used to send out booking forms for the conventions with their magazine and you've got to be a rich saddo to be able to afford to stay in the village itself. I seem to remember that they're a really bitchy lot and there's always internal wranglings going on - I think there was some hooha a few years ago about some secret videoing of one of the members...kind of ironic when you consider the theme of the programme!

In the saville show, he has a badge from the prisoner ? i think so. "Be seeing you". is that the one filmed in wales?

I've been there, it's in a great spot and is definitely worth a visit.

It was a strange show, and seemed to make more sense if the senses were herbally enhanced I went to Portmerion a few years ago, it was expensive.

oh i remember the prisoner alright, that fucking balloon used to terify me as a kid,as did the daleks and cyber men. looking back it makes u wonder how the fuck they got them shows on telly coz it wouldnt happen these days. shame really,they may have been a bit naff in hindsight but at least they showed imagination and dared to try something new. unlike the drivel we are faced with now IE: anything put out by the bbc.

I've watched all 17 episodes now. Phew! Excellent, although the last five were the weakest. Apart from Living In Harmony, which takes the piss out of westerns very nicely. There's a great twist at the end.
