Nice to see MUFC tumbling further out of the title race.:D

Ferguson no longer having the luxury of being able to buy the title must be a worry.

We were in a champions league place on Saturday morning, so it's incorrect to say we are tumbling further out. Also the reason that happened is because our rivals didn't survive in the cup as long as us, in the case of Newcastle that was because they drew us in an earlier round. What does that tell you about the current clubs around us?

You couldnt beat pompey even when you cheated!!

Owen was obviously so guilty about the fact that that so blatently wasnt a penalty that he sidefooted it to Hislop in embarrasment!!!

3months of the season left yet, it aint over till Arsehole rips off his tie in despair in a couple of months time :evil4:

For what it's worth I don't believe that we'll finish the season above Liverpool or Newcastle but for Charlton to get this far into the season and still be competing for a Champions League place after spending £750,000 on transfers shows what a poor manager Monsieur Houllier is and how so many of his so-called international stars simply couldn't give a toss so long as they get their cartloads of money.

Poor manager? Maybe not the best but he's won 4 major trophies whilst being outspent by 4 other clubs during his tenure. His achievments are certainly comparable with Ferguson's, given Ferguson's massive advantage in budget over the last five years, you'd expect him to win the title each year, he's infact managed to finish as low as 3rd. He also hasn't won a domestic or European cup for the last four seasons. Smacks more of failure to me.

Ferguson and Wenger have delivered the title to their clubs whether they've outspent Houllier or not. When Liverpool came to the Valley both this season and last season they were a very poor side - let's face it, they should be beating Charlton comfortably given their spending power but were completely outplayed by a side that while nowhere near as technically gifted actually looked like it wanted to be out there. Houllier couldn't motivate his team and all he did afterwards was whinge about the referee, luck, the weather or basically anything apart from his own inept management.

Over the 5 years his net spending has averaged 12m a season, that's behind Leeds Chelsea Newcastle and Man Utd for the same period. He's won 4 major trophies. It's ahead of everyone bar Wenger, based on money spent. How's that a poor record?

Cor, you're not gonna let that one lie, are you? Didn't see the incident but wasn't it just a complete f'up by the ref? Can't remember his name but the initials were MM cos he did our cup-tie against Tranmere about three weeks back and played a howler there too.

Said tackle yesterday was done by Matty Taylor who was a bit of a wunderkid at our place two years ago. When he came on as sub at Anfield the Liverpudlian in the Sky Fan Zone commentary said, "He came from Luton. Well, if you're gonna shop at Netto....". Famous last words ... ten minutes later, Matty Taylor equaliser.

It's ahead of everyone bar Wenger, based on money spent. How's that a poor record? Well he hasn't won the Premiership which is what most Liverpool fans seem to think counts and 3 of those major trophies came in the same year. And £12m a year is about £10m a year more than Alan Curbishley's had to spend yet you're below Charlton at the moment. I wouldn't bother quoting what the Arse, ManUre, Chelski and the like have spent at me 'cos quite frankly I couldn't give a toss. All I'm basing my opinion on is what Houllier's achieved at his club compared with the money he's spent...and he's spent a hell of a lot in comparison with the 'lesser' Premiership clubs.

Come on Hank, you have to admit it. Houllier has failed time and again. The only two trophies that have ever mattered on Anfield are the League title and the European Cup. Doesn't it piss you off just a tad to see them going elsewhere every year ? He's bought/played some shockers (not as bad as Pooness, true), but there's no way more than two of this current side would ever have got in the squad of the real good Liverpool sides.

Don't get me started on Souness - his goalkeeper gets an injury time equaliser against us on Saturday followed by his defence going to sleep allowing us to get an even more injury time winner and suddenly his team have done enough to win the game and 'Lady Luck' isn't smiling on him again! The fact that we gifted them their first goal via a suicidal back pass (even though 'Andrew' Cole did his best to cock it up by treading on the ball) seems to have escaped his attention.

I also think with Euro2004 coming up Owen has done players like Vassell,Beattie & Rooney a big favor. Lets be honest,at £85,000 odd a week he should NEVER miss a penalty. I dont hate liverpool,i feel sorry for them cos you`re not a threat in the premiership anymore & thats a shame.

You mean GBH?

It's been deleted. I keep checking ebay for a copy of the DVD.

Picked up the Football Factory on DVD from ebay today. Quality film. Good music, lots of charlie and the occasional fisty-cuffs. Very watchable. The language though, oof. Won't be watching that one with mother.

It's been filming on and off for a couple of years - Dougray Scott and Sean Bean were originally involved but the thing had to be re-shot when they weren't available for later recordings.

Frank Harper and Danny Dyer are in it now (to be honest, a better choice probably).

Details of the film are HERE

Thought it was due for cinematic release in April, but word has it that it might not get a certificate. Language is a bit rife, but the violence isn't really that bad. Danny Dyer does a lot of monologues which I presume are ripped straight from John King's train of thought in the book, but I haven't read it in ages so can't confirm.

They don't once do that opening monologue about Coventry though, which was a hilarious way to open the book.

There's plenty of DVD's of it on ebay, which is where I got my copy. Some of the acting's a bit ropey in places, but it just adds to the charm. Someone should do a drinking/cha-cha game to match it, along the lines of Withnail & I. You'd be dead after about five mins, those lads don't half knock it back.

Wonder if Dufford's in any of the crowd scenes?! :eek3:

I got me a copy of a user called evern, I think. Buy it now for 5 or 7 notes, not sure. Started 'blocking' a bit on me DVD player towards the end, but played perfectly on the PC. Without wishing to spoil the ending it's nicked from one of King's other books, though can't remember which.

I don't agree that the only trophies that have mattered are League and European Cup. We're proud to have won 38 major trophies. The fact most fans try to devalue the other trophies is part of the malaise football finds itself in during the Sky fan era. His transfer record isn't as bad as people make out. It's easy to say Hyypia isn't as good as Hansen but when the standards are set at the very top, who is going to measure up? Does 31m Ferdinand? If so I'd point out Houllier had a deal with West Ham to buy Ferdinand for 12.5m but our board would only sanction 12m. Our fisrt eleven is a fantastic side and had it been fit (or 85% of it fit)for most of this season I think we'd have been somewhere around the anount of points Chelsea have. I think it's frankly ridiculous to judge a manager without taking into account his budget. Phil Collins tries to take into account his budget in comparison to Charlton and ignores the rest of the facts. It's also a bit much to expect them to outperform someone of Wenger's obvious talent. If it does happen then enjoy it while it lasts, as it might not last forever.

As for Monsieur Hulot's transfer record how much did he spend on Diaou or El Hadji Diouf (yeah I know the spelling's probably wrong)? Was that good business? You may think it's a bit much to expect Liverpool to outperform Arsenal but they've been outperformed by Portsmouth twice this season already - is that acceptable? Oh and every team has injuries - Charlton for instance have had our first choice central defensive partnership injured for the whole season and two of our strikers have been out for 4 or 5 months, not to mention having our star midfielder lured away by Chelski - you can't use that as an excuse for poor performance.

I gave you these facts before, on this thread, you seem to have a problem with dealing with large amounts of information and instead choose to focus on isolated snippets. Am I talking to a child here? Get a profile.

From a fan's perspective yes I agree that all the trophies available matter - it is always nice to have your team winning silverware. But, financially they don't carry the same clout as the Championship and the Champions League.

I'm not sure how valid a response to criticism of Houllier's transfer record that is, comparing his dealings with other managers. Twelve wrongs don't make a right ! Ferguson has been as bad with his profligacy. To my mind, only the acquisition of Kirkland and the proven Kewell have been good dealings, maybe Baros, Le Tallec and Sinama-Pongolle in time. The Senegal bandwaggon was a big mistake - Diao and Diouf ? Biscan still owes most of his transfer fee in goods delivered as well. If it wasn't for Steven Gerrard, Liverpool would be the wrong end of the table. I don't think even a fully fit squad (and tell me who does have a fully fit squad !) would make that much difference. Liverpool have become a mid-table side, much as it pains me to say it.

I was having this discussion with my brother-in-law over Christmas (he's a long-standing Liverpool fan who travels 200 miles for home games on a regular basis), his theory was that the current side contained too many players who weren't familiar with English football, too many new players had arrived on the back of a half-decent World Cup showing for their countries. I'm inclined to agree. Half this current Liverpool squad probably don't realise the significance of "This is Anfield" or the vast aura of greatness that still intimidates the opposition at Anfield. To them, it is just another wage packet. Houllier's strange lack of understanding, given his years of Anfield experience, or his attempts to ape Wenger's success at trawling France for good kids have yet to come up with the goods. There's probably only four of the current squad would get in any other Liverpool squad since the 60s.

Try watching the sh&te played at Goodison Park. Once again it's a try to stay in the Premier scenario.

I think it's fair to judge someone against their peers. I did say 85% fit. It's unusual to have 6 players out who would otherwise be first choice for half a season. Ferdinand's absence at MUFC has been cited as why their title challenge has gone of the rails. They also struggle without Keane.

As for other successful signings: Both our current keepers are better than what we had. So both for me a success

Hyypia and Henchoz two of the best signing anywhere in the last 5 years.

Babble was excellent until his serious ill-ness. definitely a success. Finnan has been mostly excellent, too ealy to say in the long-term but mostly positive signs. Pongolle and Le Tallec both look class didn't expcet them to have featured as much as they have and again to early to say but still heralded as a major coup to recruite them when most of Europe wanted them. Baros for me he's been excellent when fit is 1st choice alongside Owen. Success Hamann. Success Kewell for 5m no two ways about it you'd be mad not to pay that. Diouf? still has a queston mark about his temperament but he gets on the ball and gives full-backs a torrid time. A lot of people have questioned his end-product but ignored the bi-products of having a harrangued full back and that many managers have had to put an extra man on him or more than a couple of occasions, substitute their attacking full-back. Some people even ignore the fact that Houllier had agreed to sign him prior to the world cup where he played up-front, having always played on the wing for his old club and the fact that his old club tried to hike up his transfer fee depsite having agreed the 10m asking price, after he'd ripped France apart. He had a great spell towards the back end of last season and was Man of the Match in approx 7 out of ten games this season prior to the Blackburn game that we lost Baros and Carra long-term in. He deserves to be judged in a settled team.

Personally I couldn't give a shit whether Liverpool keep Houllier or not nor where your team finishes up at the end of the season but your attitude towards any sort of debate shows what sort of a person you are.

No mention of the donkeys though Hank ?

Heskey ? Carragher ? Murphy ? I won't include Cheyrou in this as I quite rate him. Won't mention Diao, as he is taking the piss out of the profession half the time with some of his performances.

Couple of points Tim, I can't be arsed arguing everything when at the end of the day it amounts to opinion.

Carragher has been excellent this season as he was at left back in 2001. His England recall is much merited and even the attacking side of his game has come on in leaps. Finnan, I didn't know much about him before he came to us but he was voted into the premiership team of the season by his fellow professionals the two seasons prior to joining us. Not bad for someone at a low-profile club like Fulham.

Why doesn't 1999 count? I'm sure if the Baggies won the European Cup in it's present format you'd accept it!

It's taken me all day long (ha ha) to decipher Mike's logic here, but I think he means that as United weren't league champions the season before, they shouldn't have been allowed to enter the Champions' League. He maybe hasa point, but that's another matter. He rather invalidates it though by showing his lack of football history knowledge by "(European Cups, when it was CHAMPIONS league)" though. It was never a league, or even a series of mini-leagues, when only Champions were eligible.

West Brom in the Champions League ? More chance of those cunts from Kidderminster getting in there.
