I've just read in one of the polish newspaper about a funny competition on bbc.co.uk and I found this : http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/6sense/songsthatsaved/vote.shtml

I vote Cure, or maby Joy Division, or The Darkness, damn, I do'nt know. Maby I should call my mama. hehe:)

The Boy With The Thorn On His Side by The Smiths. It was the first ever song to be important for me. Before I was just listening to what was coming through radio or TV, and didn't care much. Then one day in 1986 I saw that video, and realised how music can make you feel such powerful emotions. It was a life-changing moment, then I became a music fan. In the following months, everything happened, I discovered almost all my favourite bands: Joy Division, Pixies, Prefab Sprout, Sugarcubes, Cocteau Twins... 1987 was the best year in music!

When I was in my mid-teens, Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream (up to "Mayonaise") probably saved my life, or at least saved me from getting into any more trouble than I was getting into. Particularly "Today", "Quiet," and "Mayonaise" were the songs that I listened to over and over. After, when my period of teen-angst-that-led-into-destructive-behavior was over, the Cure's "Open" and "Doing the unstuck" were kind of significant, mostly since they got me through my first couple of years in high school, which, since I went to 3 different junior high schools, seemed strange that I was in one place for more than one year. When I got into New Order, any "angst" I must have had passed. I was 17, and my peers no longer had any significance in my life, I wasn't getting into too much trouble (and figured that I wouldn't be qualified as a young offender much longer), and I was leaving high school in a year.

It took me all day - I decided to vote Cure 'The Pictures of You'. Every time I hear that song I feel a whole lot better. But is this a song than could save my life? I would't say that. Just a nice one, that reminds me a good times.

I can't believe they didn't list anything by NO; where's the justice in that? If they'd had Ceremony in there, I'd have voted for it because when I heard it for the first time - well, call this cheesy if you want but it was like someone had put on the lights and made me see that dance music, great as it is, didn't have the monopoly on quality. I'd say that was the song that saved my life.

I do not think a song ever saved my life. But after last Wednesday and Thursday I have a new appreciation of Vanishing Point and Truth. Definitely the worst days in my life including my father's funeral and other misfortunes.
