Being good Americans, our blood is redder than anyone else's and we make sure everyone knows it by spilling it all the time.
I was looking for the "Far Side" which had Cowboys versus aliens (have it in a book at home) but wasn't able to find it via Yahoo Images ![]()

Um, you're not taking that movie seriously, are you? Let me clarify, you're not taking that staged piece of fiction seriously, are you?
Bowling for Columbine. Having watched it coutless times, if only for the cartoon bit, its right and its wrong.
Its right about Bush, and the US media, although the good old english media likes to instill us with a sense of fear every now and again (anyone for salmon?), and he has some good points about the NRA, and assault weapons.
But i fail to see how he can attept to blame Columbine on anyone but the killers. Has Michael Moore never heard of the term 'individual responsibilty'? I am surprised he didnt get sued for linking the Kosovo conflict and US foreign policy to the shootings. And who knows, if Marilyn Manson (who i do not doubt is actually a very intelligent person) DIDNT sing about death etc etc would they have done it? Its conveniently forgotten by certain people that these people hero worshipped Manson. I'm not blaming Manson but my point is that these kids knew exactly what they were doing, and blaming anyone else is pointless.
Sermon over.

whatever you think about the film, he's got a point about canada. why, when canadians can purchase firearms almost as readily as americans, do they not have the same number of gun-related deaths?

Let's clarify: are you refering to total raw numbers or percentage of population?
Even documentary filmmakers are allowed creative license to reach a higher level of truth. Look at Herzog's documentaries, for example. Jesus, if I wanted unscripted reality, I'd start looking in the mirror every morning, but I'm sure not gonna start now.
One word: MINNESOTA DECLARATION (well, that's two words, but here it is at the bottom of this page: )

as percentage of population. you can't really compare raw numbers because the US has 10 times the population of canada!

I know... Just checking your oil. ;)
It's always been a mystery to me that Americans and Canadians need guns 'in these days' when there isn't much to shoot at for food or defence except the odd bear, other Canadians, or especially, other Americans
Personally I wouldn't be keen to eat any of them.

What in the h-e double hockey sticks is that?
Bowling For Columbine is based in about as much fact as This Is Spinal Tap. And, I like This Is Spinal Tap. And Best In Show.

Wood rules.
I never really thought about guns and people seriously owning them until I came to high school. Even before the Columbine massacre, the police used to come in once a marking period (or 4 times a year) and search each student and his stuff. It was fairly annoying, especially when my belt buckle kept making the metal detector beep, but it made sense, since usually during a search, 200 weapons, knives and guns both, were confiscated. Now, I never had a gun or a knife pulled on me while I was in high school, but it seems kind of absurd that, in a school of about 3400 students, 200 brought weapons with them to school, probably on a daily basis, back in 1999, and several hundred others probably had some at home. Kind of makes me wish that my family should have moved up to Canada at some point.

Bowling For Columbine is based in about as much fact as This Is Spinal Tap. And, I like This Is Spinal Tap. And Best In Show.
'Cinema, like poetry, is inherently able to present a number of dimensions much deeper than the level of the so-called truth that we find in cinema verite and even reality itself, and it is these dimensions that are the most fertile areas for filmmakers. [...] Cinema verite is the accountant's truth; it merely skirts the surface of what constitutes a deeper form of truth in cinema. [...] The boundary between fiction and "documentary" simply does not exist; they are all just films. [...] I know that by making a clear distinction between "fact" and "truth" in my films, I am able to penetrate to a deeper stratum of truth most films do not even notice. The deep inner truth inherent in cinema can be discovered only by not being bureaucratically, politically, and mathematically correct. In other words, I start to invent and play with the "facts" as we know them. Through invention, through imagination, through fabrication, I become more truthful than the little bureaucrats.'
