My mate did me a cd last week of old house records we all used to love when we were younger,i forgot how good it was back then (1988-1993) compared to the house music around today.
It had loads of genuinely good tracks (young mc, denise lopez, jimi polo, etc) so i was wondering,what period of dance music other NOOLers like and have they got any favorite records?
Round here Northern Soul never realy went away, insomuch as most lads could cop a move or two to Junior Walker when the need arose, in fact now at a couple of club nights you get to see one of the broadest demographics possible with teenagers picking up moves from guys in their fifties. So whilst I can understand the view that house got lads onto the dancefloor, round here it was just kinda assimilated, along with the E of course, plus it stopped one of me mates trying to dance like a mime in the Roxy room at Pips , Manchester or Berlin club, one of 'em We used to follow a local dj, lad called nipper and Gerald Simpson, In fact A Guy Called Geralds gig a the Ritz M/Cr was a crackin night

Favourite period was probably when it first exploded used to listen to Souled Out with Stu Allen on key 103 first regular club attended was Quadrant Park. Though Mondays House night at a place called Fallows may have been earlier. Madis Gras and the backroom at Cream were also regular haunts. Was a big Weatherall fan in the early 90's.

Miss Van-Rooy being the sexiest minx to come out of Liverpool hasn't ecaped my attention. Used to have a tape of her on a granada programme that also had World Of Twist doing Sons of the Stage live on it. Think she had a famous boyfriend, I gleened from someone else who remembered her but forget who. I have three mixes on vinyl, how many were there?

My favourite period of dance was probably around 1996, when I first got into it properly (I still love it to this day, BTW; I'm a bit of a clubber). A year or two ago, I made a CD of all the tunes I loved back then - the tracklisting goes like this (see if you remember any of these):
*Random fact: someone mentioned Ultraviolet's Kites in an earlier post - that tune was how Sasha discovered Maria Naylor (for it is she) in the first place. She did a live PA in my favourite club on NYE 2000 and I didn't go, so I didn't find out until afterwards. I've been kicking myself ever since for missing that.

It's gotta be 1989 to about 1995, the years when I actually went proper clubbing. Saturdays in the Sub Club (before it became over-run by stoodents), Thursdays in Rain (Slam being genuinely eclectic)are the two best nights that stick in my mind. Yeah i have it here on 12",just gave it a spin & it jumps. Its quite old (1988) and is on US label DJ International. Its on a few Old School compilations,but i imagine it`d just be a radio edit. Hope the name helps you.
You can also find it on Danny Rampling's Journeys By DJ CD - it's from the 90s and it's probably murder to find now, but when they say "classics" on the box, they really mean it. Wall-to-wall top house tunes!

Charles Webster's (Presence) Born On The 24th of July is actually a touch better than the Presence album but you do have good taste! Try Luomo - Vocal City and Carl Craig's More Revolutionary Songs about Food and Art..not exactly House but not easily catagorized either.

Can I add another to the list? Strings of Life - Rhythm is Rhythm. Gave myself a stitch dancing to this in Sankey's 2 weeks ago, but still not heard anything as amazing as when Danny Krivit played it and kept cutting up the intro til the crowd could take it no more!!

I missed fucking loads because I tried to limit myself to tracks from the late 80's and early 90's that were either house or not that dissimilar to it. There's plenty of later or harder tracks I could have mentioned and there's some earlier ones that are absolute classics such as "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer and "Blue Monday" by some band, the name of which I can't remember.:)

I have been playing house for about 12 years now and still love. In the midwestern US it still seems to be the favorite amoung club goers/ravers given the heavy influence of Chicago. My favorite period of house would have to be 90-94. Still play odds and ends from that period. All time favorite 12" is of course Blue Monday. That things still hits hard. The funny thing is a lot of the younger crowd will ask "who is this", "is this new" ? ha ha ha ha
