Truly pathetic....

Compare his post career with that of Pele...Class and building interest in the game globally versus Crass and rebuilding his nose with plastic surgery....

I really hope he cleans up...he could still be a positive force if only to show how to get away with hand balls near the goal

You jest, surely? Pele is currently advertising Impotency Products. Hardly something to boast about.

If the boy Maradona has any erectile deficienies he'd just shoot his cock full of cocaine and be done with it. Might be the last ever erection he enjoys, but christ it'd be a good 'un!

it seems drugs weren´t the problem this time. even though the drugs made the whole cardiologic problems he has, plus his overweight. i´m not saying he´s clean, because he´s not. but he was really trying hard to get out of that. it was a mix of cardiologic problems and lung infection combined with high blood tension

and i´d like to say something to those who laugh at drug addictions and it´s consecuences, why don´t you try to get rid of your own addictions? i´m sure it´s hard, isn´t it?

on the other hand drugs has anything to do with his skill as a player. i´m sick of hearing opinions about Diego as a player bringing the fact that he can´t be the best because he´s a drug addict. that goal vs England and the other one vs Belgium he did it drug free. maybe it´s a way for some people to justify the fact that he crossed the whole field letting a bunch of players behind and making their team go home.

besides, if drug is such a big deal for some of you i wonder what the hell are you doing here, giving tribute to a bunch of drug and alcohol addicts like the members of NO were/are. what is important is the things you make and what you give to the world in your time in earth. Van Gogh was crazy, Wilde was gay, Picasso was a communist... so what? let´s enjoy what they did without being so fooking judgemental about everything. let´s see the mirror first, shall we? and find that we´re horrible creatures with a couple of good characteristics.

i´m sorry, but sometimes i can´t stand the hypocresy of some people.

Fair enough, but by his own admission he CHEATED when he scored the first. Becoming a drug addict is one thing, but being a cheat is inexcusable. Particularly when you have enough talent that you don't need to be...

Alejo, though undoubtedly Maradona was a fine footballer, he will never ever be seen as just a fine player in England. He will forever be tainted with the fact that he (by his own admission) cheated us out of a match. That will never go away. The other goal he scored will never be seen as the wondergoal it was simply because that should have earned his side only a draw, it will forever be overshadowed by the cheating.

And yes I am glad the cheating bastard is ill, serves him right.

I'd like to send my very best wishes to the one and only Diego Armando Maradona. I could take a cheap shot at the English, but for once I'll refrain::eek: A genuine superstar, he's right up there with Pele and Henrik Larsson:D

The drug's angle is amusing - was listening to Talksport on Saturday on the way to footie and Gary Stevens (or is it Stephens, not sure which one they've got?) implied that the 2nd goal against England might've been 'chemically assisted'. Ho ho, ignorant tw&t.

He's hated (perhaps too strong a word) over here, but when the Beeb ran their top 100 goals thingy a couple of years back (with a national vote) he still came out no.1 with that goal against us. Poetry in motion. You can't take that away from him. And then he did it against Belgium. And then gave Matthaus the run around man-marking him in the final. Considering the lad had to play most of his career dosed up on quortisone (spelling?) after getting done over in Barcelona then he achieved great heights.

How do we know that the proven cheat with the great physique wasn't coked up to eyeballs and on steroids(his cock is small enough) when he ghosted past those players? The reason sport is dying is the whole win at all costs attitude brought about by commerce, and the political ideologies of the Eastern Bloc. Who gives a rats arse about the olympics anymore? Why? because of cheating athletes. Being clean was never an apsect of music that was lauded as a virtue. Absolutely no hypocrisy is involved whatsoever.

I'm not convinced being 'coked up to the eyeballs' helps you score goals like that in football, unless you can tell me different?! :skeptic:

I'd have to said it would have a fairly detrimental effect, bar perhaps on endurance.

Didn't he test positive for cocaine in USA 94, whilst coincidentally enjoying something of an Indian summer on the pitch?

Is coke gonna improve you as a footballer Hanky? fookin doubt it me ole fruitcake. My two wee brothers took an E before one of our games earlier this season:nonono: They were absolutely terrible, and our Daniel is usually one of the best. John probably had a few grammes still in him as well, and he was worse than Daniel!!!

Whether he took drugs is neither here nor there to me, the man was a genius on the field. The QF of 86 was DAM v Belgium, that's how good he was. As for that solo effort - there's never been a better goal than that. The one where he took on the whole England team was good as well:evil4: And please, don't mention John Barnes' in the same sentence;)

Indeed. From memory, I think he tested positive for numerous other banned substances as well?!

Still can't see the charlie made him any 'better' a footballer, per se, mind.

Personally, I don't give a flying one if Maradona did the odd line (well, the odd kilo in his case). Let he who is without sin, et cetera.

I don't much care who takes what. I don't however like the idea that if you play by the rules, you end up a mug as someone cheats their way to the top. I certainly wouldn't like to think I was paying to watch someone on a hiding to nothing because of drugs cheats.

I'm no drugs expert but aren't the main effects of cocaine to increase your heart rate and produce an inner confidence/cockyness. Now if we could perhaps get the current Liverpool team to play with those characteristics...

They're taking drugs. Which is very bad. I thought this was the argument. I still don't understand the rhetoric that Maradona was in any way a world-class footballer because he fancied the odd toot. Well, not the odd, but you get the picture. I couldn't give a fcuk what he shoved up his nose - he was a joy to watch.

Blimey!

its turning one of the best NewOrder threads for ages, if anything this is ON TOPIC! and should be bumped over to the main forum where it may attract more comments/arguments

So what if NewOrder take drugs... but I do think that sports persons are role models for a healthy lifestyle,

counterargument is that budding musicians think they can only unlock that creative process if they take drugs themselves... hmmm

so should there should be some distinction made... :confused2:

New Order aren't competing against "fellow sportsmen" who are not under the influence of substances that may enhance performance......I don't give a toss if they take every drug in the world, but I do draw the line (note obvious puns there..) when honest sportsmen are beaten by drug cheats.

so its ok to take drugs if your a musician and come up with that killer hook or chorus while you are "in the zone" which edges you that record contract over your peers who may be wracking their brains yet suffering from writers block yet refuse to do drugs because of moralistic issues???

Dont get me wrong, I don't agree with what im writing here! but im trying to draw some parallels between the two situations - if indeed there are any to be drawn..?

No argument from me that taking drugs is bad, I haven't once intimated that to be the case. Using them to cheat is the issue.

I don't think there's a parallel. If people are anti-drugs, they're anti-drugs full stop. Surely?

I can't see any situation where you can say it's okay on one hand for a rock star to take cocaine, but it's not okay for a professional footballer to do so. You makes your bed, you lie in it.

well, drugs can kill you. and taking drug don´t make you any better but neither a bad man, just an adict. do drugs make you play better? i don´t think so, you really need to have talent for that. do drugs make you sing or play better? not really, and i don´t think it has anything to do with creativity too. i don´t think that using drugs is cheating (well it really depends on the drug you take) but i think is more an illness than anything else. i think that Maradona is a great player and he still has the magic with him. but he is an adict (i wish he wasn´t) and it is very difficult for him to get out of this. he may never get out, but still it has nothing to do with his gift. but it has a lot to do with his health and with his life. he is not a bad man, he is just an adict. a great player, a great man that couldn´t stand the exposure, the fame, the money, but still the best futbol player in the world.

I'm presuming that has never actually happened? From memory, although someone who can be arsed can google this, I thought Maradona was kicked out of the 94 World Cup for imbibing all sorts of drugs (and not just recreational). So, yes, as an Argie I'd have been well fuct off with him. However, he wasn't caught in 86 and he wasn't caught in 1990. If, indeed, there was actually anything to catch him on (we can presume he got heavily involved in drugs during his year off at Barca, or almost certainly at Napoli but not sure anyone really knows ... I guess tests weren't so stringent in those days?).

Anyways, I didn't think this was the ongoing theme of the thread - people appear to think Maradona was a cheat, not just because he punched (at 5ft6) a ball over a keeper's head but because he entertained himself recreationally in ways which some people don't appreciate. Personally, I don't think he scored the second goal against England cos he'd just shoved half of Bolivia up half-time, I think he did it because he was a truly world-class footballer. And if Lineker had punched (with his fist) Barnes's cross into the roof of the net in the dying minutes instead of letting the defender nick it off his head at the last gasp I for one would've cheered with the best of them and would still be putting it down, even now, as just 'one of those things' that happens in football, eighteen years later. I certainly wouldn't be shouting 'cheat' at our Gary every time his big ears popped up on my telly. But then I don't with Maradona either. Best player I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.

Wales are currently appealing against their expulsion at the hands of a team who had a player test positive for banned drugs.

It's a seperate issue as to wether recreational drugs that are banned have any performance enhancing aspects but I suggested the possibility that he might have been on steroids in 86. His physique was certainly pumped up, as you say tests were a lot less stringent at the time.

No, I'm not. I'm saying that I can't understand why someone thinks it's okay for a rock star to indulge, but not a footballer. If you're anti-drugs (of the recreational) variety then you can't be anti-drugs in certain scenarios, or not others.

We're not gonna get an agreement on much of this, the way it is panning out.

Ask any clean competitor what they think about people who attempt to gain an unfair advantage by taking performance-enhancing drugs, and you will get the same answer. Those same people wouldn't necessarily react the same way when asked about rock stars and their drug habits. It's the fact that those who compete believe that all who compete should do so fairly, a view that I also subscribe to. I don't care what drugs musicians take to enhance their creativity or just because they can, that is immaterial, and is not the same thing at all. It is perfectly possible to be anti-sport drugs and ambivalent to recreational drugs.

just one more thing about this subject. i think everyone here played a sport in his life (football, baseball, hockey, whatever). let´s talk about football. have you got enough balls to say you never cheated? i mean, you never hold the oponent by the shirt, or made a "tactical" foul or overreacting a foul for the opnent to get a yellow card or even touched the ball with your hand? i´m sure everyone did it. now, why the hell sports have referees to say what´s good and what´s bad? we´re missing the referee´s action here. he let Diego get away with it. if he´d do his job, Maradona would have a yellow card, free kick for England, score 0-0 and end of the discussion.

now, i can stand the things said about Diego about 94 because he was on drugs (btw, the file says efedrine) and he was taken out of the tournament. but to say that for that reason everything he did before was under the drug influence is just bollocks. i know it hurts for some english fellas to see the second goal in 86, but to say it was product of drugs to take advantage is just too much. prove it! and don´t talk about being different eras in drug controls. drug controls were there at least since 78 when a scottish player (don´t remember his name) was taken out for drugs too.

besides, why don´t you try it? snort a line and make a goal like that, make Napoli (a second rate team) win a scudetto, play for yourself 2 world cups for your team (that happened in both 86 and 90, especially 90), win one and get to the finals in the other, etc. i´m sure you can´t because you don´t have his talent.

cocaine addiction is a social addiction, just like alcohol (do you want to talk about the english "Drink Team"?). steroids make you stronger in sports, cocaine doesn´t, alcohol doesn´t. both can make you believe you can and try more things because you don´t have fear to do them. if you don´t believe me get in a fight with an alcoholic and try to knock him down, you´ll see he keeps comming and comming same as a cocaine addict. but they punch like ladies and not like Tyson.

in 1984 i travelled to Europe. on the Czechoslovakian border (communist regime) they almost tear the car apart to see what we were carying and why we wanted to enter the country. we were suspicious because the car was from Germany. until we gave this brown uniform guard our passports. he saw them and looked at us with this face -> :skeptic: "Argentina?" he said. my dad said "yes". "Maradona!!!" he replied... and we entered the country in no time. and this happened beyond the iron curtin. do i need to say more?

What's the general feelings towards Maradona in Argentina though, Almanso? There's a lad who posts on another board I frequent who's got an Argie girlfriend who claims he's reviled by most of the country, bar Boca fans (and it's alleged he 'funds' Boca Ultras).

I read the Jimmy Burns book on him years back and I'm pretty sure that he said Maradona was pretty much looked down upon due to his peasant (Indian?) upbringing and that football itself was looked upon disfavourably (again, as a peasant's game) by the rugby and polo-playing 'upper classes'.

I think he got pretty much the same treatment in Spain where again he was just viewed as an 'Indian' by fans there?

well i gotta agree with almanso on this one, name a pro player that hasnt cheated or resorted to subtefuge to get a win. im english and was as gutted as anyone when maradonna did that infamous handball incedent and the goal stood. but thats the game of football innit, just last night watching chelsea v monaco a monaco player tapps makelele on his head and he fell to the floor like hed been hit with a baseballbat hence the monaco player gets sent off???. sickening for a monaco fan sure but if it was the other way around theyd all be cheering. as for maradonna and the drugs and being an example to kids ect who gives a shit,we (the parents) should be the prime examples to our kids not a sports star. although maradonna has had his drug problems and been involved in a few dodgy situations on and off the pitch his talent was unquestionable and hes brought pleasure to millions and i hope he gets well soon.

I think he got pretty much the same treatment in Spain where again he was just viewed as an 'Indian' by fans there? well, you can have different opinions here. the ones that believe he´s a "god" and the ones who always come up in situations like this one to beat him up. he was born in a very poor place (shanty town is the translation i found) and became one of the most famous persons in the world. he had nothing and then he got everything. he had no education but Oxford University gave him an honorary Master’s degree. for some people (upper class mainly) that is unacceptable. for others it´s remarkable. and he´s controversial so it´s difficult to be in the center and not hate him or love him. so it happens the same as other controversial figures around the world.

ah, and the upper classes don´t call him (and all the poor people) "indian" but "black" or "little black head". which is an awful thing to say, especially for some of them having darker color of skin. anyway...

we have several similar examples in the uk,gascoine and best being the most memorable i suppose ie: love or hate em. but as for hank putting beardsleys name forward as being an honest player, why was his nickname BENTface:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Former star still in ICU

Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Diego Maradona was taken off a respirator Friday but remained in intensive care for a sixth consecutive day with severe heart and lung problems. The medical team treating the 43-year-old soccer great said it suspended use of a breathing tube at midday, replacing the tube with a plastic mask to provide Maradona with oxygen support.

The team also said in a statement that Maradona would continue to get treatment for the underlying heart inflammation and lung infection that brought on his latest health crisis.

"The respirator was suspended. He continues to make progress,' the statement said.

Maradona's steadfast fans continued their vigil by burning candles, chanting his name and waving banners outside the downtown Buenos Aires clinic.

"If you're heart gets healthy, so will mine!' one new banner said.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, was admitted to the Suizo-Argentina Clinic on Sunday because of chest pains.

Authorities said the emergency hospitalization was not drug-related. Maradona has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in Cuba for cocaine abuse.

Maradona was suspended from the Italian league while playing for Napoli in 1991 for 15 months following a positive test for cocaine.

Three years later, FIFA suspended him for 15 months because of a positive test at the World Cup in the United States. He retired from pro soccer in 1997.

yeah, fortunately he´s getting better now. unfortunately if he continues like that we won´t have Maradona in the near future. to be healthy he must get clean of everything he takes and i don´t believe he´ll do it.

i posted my opinion about him to be a junkie. but to be fat? what does it have to do with anything? :confused2:

Johan Cruyff for me SUBLIME

Cruyff, outstanding player. no question about it. the best ever? iMHO not a chance.

as some of you like stories (and some even believe them) there´s an interesting story about him, though. what if i tell you he decided not to play in 78 for his team because he had an exclusive personal deal with Adidas's rivals Puma? because of this, he was unwilling to sport the three trademark stripes of Adidas and insisted on a two-striped version instead. he did it in 74. the dutch federation didn´t let him get away with it in 78 and that´s why he decided not to show up. of course, his story tells he wasn´t here because of the militar coup and all that. i used to respect him very much for that since i hate those militar bastards, but when i heard that story and i found out pictures of the 2-stripes t-shirt he used on 74... i started to doubt

The subject is pretty much covered, i agree with some posts 100%, 0% with others, and with the rest somewhere in between. I could write my longest post for Diego, but i ll just say a couple of things: We say for many great players that they were/are "gods". Always exagerating of course, cos all are human, well Maradona was the one that the exageration was the less far from actual reality. Never before, ONE player achieved so much in his club or national team career having such few help from his team mates. Napoli was a second class team before him and it became again after him. The argentinian team of 1986 wasn't at all what u' d call "an impressive bunch of football players", not to mention the '90 team, prolly the worst argentina ever had, which team Maradona took by the hand and almost gave them their second (consecutive) world cup. By the way, im sure you all remember how they lost that final against Germany (that laughable referre's penalty desicion, minutes before the end). Not too fair as well, eh? As for the drug and playing performance issue, im covered by most of the posts regarding the subject. If it was so easy to take a couple of pills and win numerous games by yourself, then we 'd had many many more Maradonas, not just one... Unless of course every footbaler is a drug addict, and he was just the best of all drug addicts . As for me, i ll always feel lucky that i had the chance to see him playing live in my city back in 1988 with Napoli, against a local team (PAOK) for the UEFA cup and how he managed to earn the the respect admiration even of PAOK's worst hooligans in the end, both with his playing skills and his character. I wish him the best.

well, i guess is just a matter of personal values. as a player, Diego was always there representing Argentina, playing with serious injuries, travelling large distances, letting all behind for the national team (remember he played the whole 1990 cup with his ankle with the size of a watermelon). then there is his personal life and the drug issues. but when it comes to his sport life you´d choose Cruyff selfish "economic" behaviour over that. again it´s a matter of personal values. yours are very different than mines

i really think he´s trying to end his life. soon ago his all life manager stealed a lot of money from him and he can´t recover from that. they were the closest friends so Diego is very sad about it. his wife also left him so he must feel pretty lonely right now. and with an addiction and with money to spend.... that could be dangerous. like i said before, i don´`t think we´ll have him around in the near future. that´s so sad for me.
