We're not gonna get an agreement on much of this, the way it is panning out.

Ask any clean competitor what they think about people who attempt to gain an unfair advantage by taking performance-enhancing drugs, and you will get the same answer. Those same people wouldn't necessarily react the same way when asked about rock stars and their drug habits. It's the fact that those who compete believe that all who compete should do so fairly, a view that I also subscribe to. I don't care what drugs musicians take to enhance their creativity or just because they can, that is immaterial, and is not the same thing at all. It is perfectly possible to be anti-sport drugs and ambivalent to recreational drugs.

Left with dust cos we did all the Charlie.....that IS what you mean int it Bruv?:ignore:

Any kids reading - Don't Do It.....unless you like drinking straight Aftershock's at 8 in the morning. Has anyone got a video of Maradona's best displays and goals? THAT would make some video. He was nearly as good as Jinky was Diego:nod:

just one more thing about this subject. i think everyone here played a sport in his life (football, baseball, hockey, whatever). let´s talk about football. have you got enough balls to say you never cheated? i mean, you never hold the oponent by the shirt, or made a "tactical" foul or overreacting a foul for the opnent to get a yellow card or even touched the ball with your hand? i´m sure everyone did it. now, why the hell sports have referees to say what´s good and what´s bad? we´re missing the referee´s action here. he let Diego get away with it. if he´d do his job, Maradona would have a yellow card, free kick for England, score 0-0 and end of the discussion.

now, i can stand the things said about Diego about 94 because he was on drugs (btw, the file says efedrine) and he was taken out of the tournament. but to say that for that reason everything he did before was under the drug influence is just bollocks. i know it hurts for some english fellas to see the second goal in 86, but to say it was product of drugs to take advantage is just too much. prove it! and don´t talk about being different eras in drug controls. drug controls were there at least since 78 when a scottish player (don´t remember his name) was taken out for drugs too.

besides, why don´t you try it? snort a line and make a goal like that, make Napoli (a second rate team) win a scudetto, play for yourself 2 world cups for your team (that happened in both 86 and 90, especially 90), win one and get to the finals in the other, etc. i´m sure you can´t because you don´t have his talent.

cocaine addiction is a social addiction, just like alcohol (do you want to talk about the english "Drink Team"?). steroids make you stronger in sports, cocaine doesn´t, alcohol doesn´t. both can make you believe you can and try more things because you don´t have fear to do them. if you don´t believe me get in a fight with an alcoholic and try to knock him down, you´ll see he keeps comming and comming same as a cocaine addict. but they punch like ladies and not like Tyson.

in 1984 i travelled to Europe. on the Czechoslovakian border (communist regime) they almost tear the car apart to see what we were carying and why we wanted to enter the country. we were suspicious because the car was from Germany. until we gave this brown uniform guard our passports. he saw them and looked at us with this face -> :skeptic: "Argentina?" he said. my dad said "yes". "Maradona!!!" he replied... and we entered the country in no time. and this happened beyond the iron curtin. do i need to say more?

What's the general feelings towards Maradona in Argentina though, Almanso? There's a lad who posts on another board I frequent who's got an Argie girlfriend who claims he's reviled by most of the country, bar Boca fans (and it's alleged he 'funds' Boca Ultras).

I read the Jimmy Burns book on him years back and I'm pretty sure that he said Maradona was pretty much looked down upon due to his peasant (Indian?) upbringing and that football itself was looked upon disfavourably (again, as a peasant's game) by the rugby and polo-playing 'upper classes'.

I think he got pretty much the same treatment in Spain where again he was just viewed as an 'Indian' by fans there?

well i gotta agree with almanso on this one, name a pro player that hasnt cheated or resorted to subtefuge to get a win. im english and was as gutted as anyone when maradonna did that infamous handball incedent and the goal stood. but thats the game of football innit, just last night watching chelsea v monaco a monaco player tapps makelele on his head and he fell to the floor like hed been hit with a baseballbat hence the monaco player gets sent off???. sickening for a monaco fan sure but if it was the other way around theyd all be cheering. as for maradonna and the drugs and being an example to kids ect who gives a shit,we (the parents) should be the prime examples to our kids not a sports star. although maradonna has had his drug problems and been involved in a few dodgy situations on and off the pitch his talent was unquestionable and hes brought pleasure to millions and i hope he gets well soon.

I think he got pretty much the same treatment in Spain where again he was just viewed as an 'Indian' by fans there? well, you can have different opinions here. the ones that believe he´s a "god" and the ones who always come up in situations like this one to beat him up. he was born in a very poor place (shanty town is the translation i found) and became one of the most famous persons in the world. he had nothing and then he got everything. he had no education but Oxford University gave him an honorary Master’s degree. for some people (upper class mainly) that is unacceptable. for others it´s remarkable. and he´s controversial so it´s difficult to be in the center and not hate him or love him. so it happens the same as other controversial figures around the world.

ah, and the upper classes don´t call him (and all the poor people) "indian" but "black" or "little black head". which is an awful thing to say, especially for some of them having darker color of skin. anyway...

we have several similar examples in the uk,gascoine and best being the most memorable i suppose ie: love or hate em. but as for hank putting beardsleys name forward as being an honest player, why was his nickname BENTface:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Former star still in ICU

Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Diego Maradona was taken off a respirator Friday but remained in intensive care for a sixth consecutive day with severe heart and lung problems. The medical team treating the 43-year-old soccer great said it suspended use of a breathing tube at midday, replacing the tube with a plastic mask to provide Maradona with oxygen support.

The team also said in a statement that Maradona would continue to get treatment for the underlying heart inflammation and lung infection that brought on his latest health crisis.

"The respirator was suspended. He continues to make progress,' the statement said.

Maradona's steadfast fans continued their vigil by burning candles, chanting his name and waving banners outside the downtown Buenos Aires clinic.

"If you're heart gets healthy, so will mine!' one new banner said.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, was admitted to the Suizo-Argentina Clinic on Sunday because of chest pains.

Authorities said the emergency hospitalization was not drug-related. Maradona has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in Cuba for cocaine abuse.

Maradona was suspended from the Italian league while playing for Napoli in 1991 for 15 months following a positive test for cocaine.

Three years later, FIFA suspended him for 15 months because of a positive test at the World Cup in the United States. He retired from pro soccer in 1997.

yeah, fortunately he´s getting better now. unfortunately if he continues like that we won´t have Maradona in the near future. to be healthy he must get clean of everything he takes and i don´t believe he´ll do it.

i posted my opinion about him to be a junkie. but to be fat? what does it have to do with anything? :confused2:

Johan Cruyff for me SUBLIME

Cruyff, outstanding player. no question about it. the best ever? iMHO not a chance.

as some of you like stories (and some even believe them) there´s an interesting story about him, though. what if i tell you he decided not to play in 78 for his team because he had an exclusive personal deal with Adidas's rivals Puma? because of this, he was unwilling to sport the three trademark stripes of Adidas and insisted on a two-striped version instead. he did it in 74. the dutch federation didn´t let him get away with it in 78 and that´s why he decided not to show up. of course, his story tells he wasn´t here because of the militar coup and all that. i used to respect him very much for that since i hate those militar bastards, but when i heard that story and i found out pictures of the 2-stripes t-shirt he used on 74... i started to doubt

The subject is pretty much covered, i agree with some posts 100%, 0% with others, and with the rest somewhere in between. I could write my longest post for Diego, but i ll just say a couple of things: We say for many great players that they were/are "gods". Always exagerating of course, cos all are human, well Maradona was the one that the exageration was the less far from actual reality. Never before, ONE player achieved so much in his club or national team career having such few help from his team mates. Napoli was a second class team before him and it became again after him. The argentinian team of 1986 wasn't at all what u' d call "an impressive bunch of football players", not to mention the '90 team, prolly the worst argentina ever had, which team Maradona took by the hand and almost gave them their second (consecutive) world cup. By the way, im sure you all remember how they lost that final against Germany (that laughable referre's penalty desicion, minutes before the end). Not too fair as well, eh? As for the drug and playing performance issue, im covered by most of the posts regarding the subject. If it was so easy to take a couple of pills and win numerous games by yourself, then we 'd had many many more Maradonas, not just one... Unless of course every footbaler is a drug addict, and he was just the best of all drug addicts . As for me, i ll always feel lucky that i had the chance to see him playing live in my city back in 1988 with Napoli, against a local team (PAOK) for the UEFA cup and how he managed to earn the the respect admiration even of PAOK's worst hooligans in the end, both with his playing skills and his character. I wish him the best.

well, i guess is just a matter of personal values. as a player, Diego was always there representing Argentina, playing with serious injuries, travelling large distances, letting all behind for the national team (remember he played the whole 1990 cup with his ankle with the size of a watermelon). then there is his personal life and the drug issues. but when it comes to his sport life you´d choose Cruyff selfish "economic" behaviour over that. again it´s a matter of personal values. yours are very different than mines

i really think he´s trying to end his life. soon ago his all life manager stealed a lot of money from him and he can´t recover from that. they were the closest friends so Diego is very sad about it. his wife also left him so he must feel pretty lonely right now. and with an addiction and with money to spend.... that could be dangerous. like i said before, i don´`t think we´ll have him around in the near future. that´s so sad for me.
