So, we, like, stop seeing New Order on stage because they might be 'on something'?

Or burn our copies of Temptation cos Barney (allegedly) recorded the lyrics whilst under the influence?! :eek3:

Eh? What competition would they be cheating in?

They're taking drugs. Which is very bad. I thought this was the argument. I still don't understand the rhetoric that Maradona was in any way a world-class footballer because he fancied the odd toot. Well, not the odd, but you get the picture. I couldn't give a fcuk what he shoved up his nose - he was a joy to watch.

..and Barney had the cheek to wear a DON'T DO DRUGS t-shirt on The Roxy programme in '87. The cad !:uhoh:

Blimey!

its turning one of the best NewOrder threads for ages, if anything this is ON TOPIC! and should be bumped over to the main forum where it may attract more comments/arguments

So what if NewOrder take drugs... but I do think that sports persons are role models for a healthy lifestyle,

counterargument is that budding musicians think they can only unlock that creative process if they take drugs themselves... hmmm

so should there should be some distinction made... :confused2:

Quite true, sir.

Too many miserable cunts on the main forum - this is like The Young One's being shown on BBC2:nod:

New Order aren't competing against "fellow sportsmen" who are not under the influence of substances that may enhance performance......I don't give a toss if they take every drug in the world, but I do draw the line (note obvious puns there..) when honest sportsmen are beaten by drug cheats.

With my limited knowledge:nod: I'd say coke definitely would affect yer balance for starters.....and your concentration. So I can't see how it would affect another team, it's like playing when you've had a few beers or suffering from a hangover. I will have to put this to the Ultimate test Saturday.....anyone wanna send me a decent wrap? :evil4:

so its ok to take drugs if your a musician and come up with that killer hook or chorus while you are "in the zone" which edges you that record contract over your peers who may be wracking their brains yet suffering from writers block yet refuse to do drugs because of moralistic issues???

Dont get me wrong, I don't agree with what im writing here! but im trying to draw some parallels between the two situations - if indeed there are any to be drawn..?

No argument from me that taking drugs is bad, I haven't once intimated that to be the case. Using them to cheat is the issue.

I don't think there's a parallel. If people are anti-drugs, they're anti-drugs full stop. Surely?

I can't see any situation where you can say it's okay on one hand for a rock star to take cocaine, but it's not okay for a professional footballer to do so. You makes your bed, you lie in it.

Oooops! I meant parallel LINES between the two situations! :evil4:

So following that logic, if you were to spend 4 grand following your team up and down the contry and across Europe all season and they missed out to a team who tested positive for banned substances, you wouldn't be arsed because you like to dabble yourself?

Nope - Baldrick makes my bed. Football and Drugs? An unlikely combination? I think not. Is taking drugs in football cheating? So many questions! Bring back naked cheerleaders that's what I say......and I'm sure Diego himself would approve;)

well, drugs can kill you. and taking drug don´t make you any better but neither a bad man, just an adict. do drugs make you play better? i don´t think so, you really need to have talent for that. do drugs make you sing or play better? not really, and i don´t think it has anything to do with creativity too. i don´t think that using drugs is cheating (well it really depends on the drug you take) but i think is more an illness than anything else. i think that Maradona is a great player and he still has the magic with him. but he is an adict (i wish he wasn´t) and it is very difficult for him to get out of this. he may never get out, but still it has nothing to do with his gift. but it has a lot to do with his health and with his life. he is not a bad man, he is just an adict. a great player, a great man that couldn´t stand the exposure, the fame, the money, but still the best futbol player in the world.

I'm presuming that has never actually happened? From memory, although someone who can be arsed can google this, I thought Maradona was kicked out of the 94 World Cup for imbibing all sorts of drugs (and not just recreational). So, yes, as an Argie I'd have been well fuct off with him. However, he wasn't caught in 86 and he wasn't caught in 1990. If, indeed, there was actually anything to catch him on (we can presume he got heavily involved in drugs during his year off at Barca, or almost certainly at Napoli but not sure anyone really knows ... I guess tests weren't so stringent in those days?).

Anyways, I didn't think this was the ongoing theme of the thread - people appear to think Maradona was a cheat, not just because he punched (at 5ft6) a ball over a keeper's head but because he entertained himself recreationally in ways which some people don't appreciate. Personally, I don't think he scored the second goal against England cos he'd just shoved half of Bolivia up half-time, I think he did it because he was a truly world-class footballer. And if Lineker had punched (with his fist) Barnes's cross into the roof of the net in the dying minutes instead of letting the defender nick it off his head at the last gasp I for one would've cheered with the best of them and would still be putting it down, even now, as just 'one of those things' that happens in football, eighteen years later. I certainly wouldn't be shouting 'cheat' at our Gary every time his big ears popped up on my telly. But then I don't with Maradona either. Best player I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.

Wales are currently appealing against their expulsion at the hands of a team who had a player test positive for banned drugs.

It's a seperate issue as to wether recreational drugs that are banned have any performance enhancing aspects but I suggested the possibility that he might have been on steroids in 86. His physique was certainly pumped up, as you say tests were a lot less stringent at the time.

Al, your arguing with yourself!!

No, I'm not. I'm saying that I can't understand why someone thinks it's okay for a rock star to indulge, but not a footballer. If you're anti-drugs (of the recreational) variety then you can't be anti-drugs in certain scenarios, or not others.

Where's Mary Whitehouse when you need her?!

Dead isn't she? Aren't C4 doing a thing were they're gonna show stuff she tried to ban?

Though I'm brazilian, I'm a fan of Maradona as a player. You cannot don't be one. I remember I bought a Napoli shirt when I was 11, just because of him - not because of Careca or Alemão, those Dumbass :evil4:

And since when cocaine increases somone performance in sports? :skeptic:

Well i have never been averse to the odd recreational classes, as ShugZV will vouch for during that famous "avatar night"

However i think physical ability and mental ability are totally different things to compare,

Sport has a hypocritical side surely? is there drug testing in wrestling? weightlifting? bodybuilding?
