I was watching ESPN and saw a clip from 1989 where the Sabres goalie at the time, Clint Malarchuk, got his carotid artery sliced by an opponent's player's skate. I nearly heaved my breakfast into the toilet at that point. I was too young when this happened, but does anybody here remember that incident?

Show us photographic evidence. Nothing like feeling very squeemish to get one up in the morning.
Oh and also, did Sabres go on to win the game in fine style to uphold his memory? Everyone loves a happy ending after all.

He came back after 3 weeks after 300 stitches, but then his career waned. He's now a goalie coach for the Florida Panthers. Poor guy also had a history of severe depression.

I remember that incident VERY WELL, as I was watching that game live when it happened.
It was a moment of total panic.
The trainer literally saved Malarchuk's life by pressing his finger against his carotide while waiting for an ambulance.
Malarchuk never really got over that incident after that, for obvious reasons.

I remember reading about that when it happened...but I had never seen any visuals until now...

one of the other managers at the store mentioned this when he arrived this afternoon...
i remember that i didnt see it live they showed it during a Rangers game, i read somewhere that they actually had to work on him right in the locker room because he lost so much blood he would have died on the way to the hospital, and yes he started a game 2 weeks after the injury. clint played for a few years in the IHL after his nhl days were over too i think he finally retired in 96 or 97
