Thatcher: soft fuzzy bunny or brutal iron maiden?

In the continuing NOOL spirit of non-controversial topics that have fcuk-all to do with The Cure ( :D ), Thatcher's Legacy is being evaluated on the BBC. So what do you lot think? Soft fuzzy bunny or brutal iron maiden?

just when you start to compare blair to her, you stop and think. heres one espically for uncle liam: tatchers press sec, bernard ingham was in ucd for a nuclear debate (he was all for sellafield, against wind farms, etc) and he says to my group (generally making points to him during the debate) "aha, i see the arthur scargill (trade unionist during the 70s/80s, lead miners strike etc)fan club up there", and one of the boys shouts out "its a pity scargill diddnt finifh you off", to which another one of the boys goes "its a pity the ira diddnt finish you off".we were the only ones laughing, but it was pretty good stuff. as ive said before, im no fan of terrorism or the ira, but were they to take out the tories in the brighton that time, the world would be an awful lot better ;)

Her impact loomed large over Liverpool when I was growing up during the late 80s and early 90s, and it wasn't too great. Still, at least under Maggie I'd have had a student grant (and could have received unemployment benefit during the holidays when temporary jobs are as rare as rockin' horse shit). As it is under Tony, seeing as I come from a family that scrapes the "middle earners" bracket, I've got about 3 loans to pay back, and need to work in the worst places known to man just to scrape together a few quid for a couple of beers on a Friday night! (boo fucking hoo I hear you all cry)

As they say, it's what you do, not what you say, and Tony's not delivering in the former category.

True, can't really argue with this - I'm certainly not sufficiently informed to argue any pros and cons of Thatcher's "reign". I was far too young to fully experience the effects (though the memories of my grandfather's frustration at sudden and brutal unemployment still remain as strong as ever).

My main issue in political terms is Blair's desire to get everyone in full-time education, which is translating into every other frigger applying to study History of Art, or Post-modernistic Philosophy, and the ones trying to get a real degree have to subsidise these swines who are just swanning about drinking lattes and munching on Pret a Manger sarnies for 3 years! I was essentially using this thread to air my frustrations at our Tony...

You can see Thatcher's legacy everywhere, mate: just come down to Stoke and take a look!! But you're right about trying to shove everyone through the Graduate Factory that is University these days: my students rack up SO much debt it's obscene, most of them have to work pretty much full-time just to make ends meet......there's no fucking way I'd go to Uni today [NB - I just caught the last dregs of the grant system, so came out with less than £2000 debt, which is peanuts compared to the average these days....]

All we need now is for Derek Hatton to pop up.

That's my main bugbear too. Why should anyone who's not doing a course related to science, medicine or law have to go to uni at all? The three areas I've named should be the only ones you need a degree for. Staying in education for too long stops you growing up, plus there's the knowledge that everyone who hasn't been to uni's going to hate you once you graduate. I'm lucky because I'm finishing next year, so I'll just miss having to pay the frankly astronomical fees the unis in the UK are wanting. My advice to anyone thinking of going to uni is: Don't. Get a job when you're 16 or 18 and save yourself a load of hassle and money.

As a slight turnabout from my last posting here, but come on: that's intellectual fascism at its worst, particularly as you seem to be implicitly valorising the legal profession when they are, of course, the worst form of a parsitical scum on then planet (apart from Cardiff City fans, of course). And what's wrong with not "growing up"? That's why I'm still here, albeit at the front of the lecture theatre rather than going to sleep at the back. After all, most people who post on here are in their 30s and 40s, are University educated, and are still hopelessly besotted with something as adolescent as a pop group. Not "growing up" has its virtues, surely????
