BEST PIL ALBUM

got myself some p.i.l bootlegs today made me think of how good this band actaully were even the guitar rock of Album was interesting

of course nothing beats the first three albums

what do u think of Johns Post Pistols action..

I love all the post Pistols stuff, never actually liked the Pistols at all. Out of the above albums I have to admit that I haven't got 9, so based on the others my favourite is That what is not.

9 was my first pil album that i had on cassette. so the memories of blasting that in my headphones when i was 11 years old will always stick with me :)

didnt they support new order in 89? it coincides with 9 and technique i think.

I'll have to get back on this one, I lost track after the first 3 albums, though I did enjoy Rise a lot. Never did buy the This Is What You Want album, cause there was a bootleg album just before that came out called Commercial Zone. From the Trouser Press website.......

PiL started work on This Is What You Want before Levene's departure; his guitar parts were wiped off the finished product, leaving them spiked only by Lydon's glum caterwauling. Levene saw to the release of his own version of the session tapes under the name Commercial Zone; the music here is considerably more interesting — perhaps even lively. By taking PiL seriously as a career, Lydon committed heresy against punk anomie. But at least he's still excruciating.

Track listing is Love Song, Mad Max, Bad Night, Solitaire on side one. Two is The Slab, Lou Reed parts 1 and 2, Blue Water, and Miller Hi-Life. Sorry I can't tell ya if Levene's version is better than Lydon's, maybe I should go buy a used copy of This.....

ive heard about the commercial zone bootleg but have never seen a copy

I'm amazed to be the first to vote for the first one: Lowlife/Annalisa/ReligionI & II - what a cracker. The second album is great too- last month I bought it on CD at last, but it's not quite the same as trying to get the fucking records out of the tin whilst holding it upside down and trying not to drop the contents all over the floor. The little tin the CD came in seems a bit sanitised...

Flowers was great too, but after that I'm afraid it's diminishing returns all the way (loved him on Celebrity though!).

pffft i was into pil from the start,mainly out of curiosity ,being a big pistols fan. the first album was awsome imo,"attack" being my fave. metal box (i have the original triple tin box version)however left me thinking they had gone mad,most of it sounded as if they was falling down a flight of stairs with their instruments while john sang over the top of it. flowrs of romance for me was a brilliant album and the best they produced. they have had highlights since of course,singles ect,but i dont think johns heart has been in it as much as it could have been since. mind u hes been fed up of all the bullshit that has been in the music/media industry for many a year so who could blame him. it made me giggle to see how popular he became on iacgmooh and being wooed to appear on this that and the other and even more rotten tv, no wonder he told em all to get lost. good on yer m8

Yep, all for that. My Metal Box is starting to rust a little - perhaps they should provide an aftersales service "How to care for your metal box" kind of thing. I suppose it would help if I brought it in from the lawn.

The Sugacubes, Public Image LTD & New Order Toured the U.S. together in '89 i could kill myself for not seeing that gig

The cd copy of metal box i have is also rusting away in the tin

PIL are fucking brilliant, prolly my all time favorite band.

Metal Box is my favortie album, a masterpiece. But I love The Flowers of Romance, This is What You Want, Album, and 9 as well. All thier albums have a different sound and feel. Lydon was very brave to change his sound on every album.

Ive got Commcercial Zone. Its okay, a few of the songs rock, but I still like This IS What You Want better.

PIL co headlined the Monsters of Art tour in 1989 with New Order. PIL stole the show as well. It must have been hard for NO to come on after a punk icon and brilliant frontman like John Lydon.

I voted for Metal Box... for the Metal Box it comes in. Actually i voted for it because of the fantastic post-punk songs on it. I wonder if the Sex Pistols had stayed together, would this be their second album? Somehow i doubt it.

John wrote some of the lyrics used on First Issue while he was in the Pistols - Religion and Lowlife definitely and possibly Attack too. The Pistols apparently played a version of Religion ('Sod In Heaven' as it was originally called) during their soundcheck at the Dallas Longhorn Ballroom gig in January '78.

My fav. has to be "The Greatest Hits, So Far" as it has all of the best songs on one CD : This is not a love song, Rise, Home, Seattle, Warrior, etc......but it wasnt on the list

*ahem* another vote for Metal Box/Second Edition. *surprise surprise* umm... what happened to Album/Cassette/Compact Disc on the poll?

anyway... there's no denying that Metal Box/Second Edition is a classic. but almost all their early albums are great. i would rank the first four albums likke this:

Public Image - First Issue: 9 Metal Box - Second Edition: 9.5 Flowers of Romance: 8.5 This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get: 8

as for the rest of their discography, they have their moments, but nothing like the first four...

metal box yes but only for the sexy artwork, compact disc was nice too

Metal Box was issued in December (I think) 1979 in a limited edition and Second Edition was issued a few months later for those unable to obtain a metal one or those unwilling to pay what was in those days the fairly extortionate price of something in the region of £8.45. I remember that the Virgin Megastore had racks of Metal Boxes when it first came out and part of the wall was covered in large posters with the lyrics on. The order of the songs was changed for Second Edition to accomodate the tracks in the new format and as a bonus the lyrics were included in a smaller version of the aforementioned posters. My vinyl version has weathered quite well in comparison to all the rusty specimins that appear on eBay unlike the cd version I bought about 10 years ago that is looking a bit sorry for itself...

and the lyrics for Metal Box were published in the NME because they couldn't afford to print them for the album because, you guessed it, the metal box cost to much to manufacture.
