uprising anniversary

maybe you dont know - yesterday we had 60th anniversary of our uprising in Warsaw. It was the biggest civil fight against germans during WWII in Europe. But it is not the point. One of our guest was Schroeder, german chancellor. I had some doubt - what is he doing in my town in such a moment. Now I have not. I saw him shaking hands with the fighters who are still alive, I saw him taking medal "uprising 1944 - Warsaw" and crying, I saw his real tears. Now I know that his stay in Warsaw was necessary and I understand much more as well.

Congrats I watched the Deutsch Welle coverage about the commemoration of the uprising. Pretty interesting stuff.

On another Polish issue:Does "Solidarity" still exist in any form - as a trade union or political group maybe?

right, they are still alive as a both political group (without any success) and trade union. such a mix:)

Nice post, Arek. My dad was 12 years old at the time of the uprising, and was one of the runners who carried messages through the tunnels in the city. The Warsaw Uprising is one of those WWII events which seems to get forgotten when taken against some of the better-known actions, but for Poles everywhere, 1st August will always be remembered.

What the Polish people did during the Warsaw Uprising was incredible. Some statistics:

• 50,000 Poles fought 150,000 Germans during the Uprising
• 150,000 Poles were killed
• 165,000 Poles were deported to concentration camps
• 300,000 Poles were made homeless
• Himmler ordered the destruction of the city of Warsaw

Meanwhile, the Red Army sat by and let the poles and the Germans fight it out...

and the evil thing for them to do as well, and let's not forget the allies total lack of support.
