Wayne Rooney: Newcastle Bound?...

BBC Ceefax (it's like the internet, only older) reported yesterday that Everton turned down a £20 million bid from Newcastle United for Wayne Rooney.

Now today, Bobby Robson is saying that he may increase NUFC's original offer, as he believes the Toffees financial situation will inevitably force them to flog Roonaldo before the transfer window closes. Supposedly Bill Kenwright & co. are still holding out for £30 million, so my guess is, if Rooney does leave soon, it'll be for about £25 million, as I doubt Newcastle will pay the full asking price, but I doubt EFC can resist the money for much longer.

Personally, I don't know any plausible reason why Wayne would want to play at St. James Park. If he decided himself he'd like to move to Geordieland, then that, to me, shows a massive lack of ambition, like Alan Shearer did 8 years ago.

Shearer left a club he'd won the Premiership title with to join his "boyhood club" in 1996, which would have been fair enough if he was in his early-to-mid 30's & winding down his career (like he is now). Shearer should have joined either Manchester United, Arsenal or a big Spanish or Italian club after leaving Blackburn, not the over-hyped Newcastle United: supposedly a footballing hotbed, but the team hasn't won anything since Jesus was a carpenter.

I fear Rooney will make the same mistake Shearer has: namely wasting his career at a painfully-average, under-achieving club. Hopefully Manchester United or Chelsea will loosen the purse-strings somewhat & save Wayne from 7 or 8 years of having an empty trophy cabinet in his Tyneside mansion (though I don't actually think Man Utd need another striker on such a long-term basis, esp. not one as expensive as Roon)

I do think Alan wasted his career though, especially after retiring from international duty in 2000 (I bet he'd still be picked for England's starting XI now most times, despite being 34, if he'd not quit). Roon is still only a teen, though, I suppose if he goes to St. James Park for 3 or 4 years, he'd still be young enough to secure an even bigger money move to Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea or Real Madrid in 2007/2008.

Still hope he won't go to Newcastle though, he may aswell stay at Goodison Park if he's that unambitious. Much as I love the legendary Sir Bobby Robson (probably the most unintentionally funny man in football), he ought to thank his lucky stars he's being forced out of the dump that is the city of Newcastle at the end of the season; the bloody place is jinxed, & David Copperfield would be hard-placed to weave some magic there.

Newcastle fans the best in the country, my arse! They're probably the most patient, though, I'll give `em that... :D

Apparantly Wayne has just handed in a transfer request to Everton, & allegedly favours a move to Newcastle rather than Manchester (the daft apeth)

I don't blame Rooney for not wanting to go to Manchester United, as the city is a cesspit, the fans are complete pricks & the club itself is excessively arrogant (& what have they had to be arrogant about recently? A Cup Final win over Millwall- big wow!), but in terms of his career development, he should really choose Old Trafford over St. James Park.

Then again, if he really wants to sock it to Everton, he should join my favourite Premiership side Liverpool! And turn up at the Anfield press conference wearing a t-shirt with 'The Sun' logo on it! ;)

I think if Rooney really does want to make a fresh start with his career, the only decent thing he can do is either try a secure a move to either Arsenal (who claim they can't afford him, but I doubt that) or Chelsea, as being in London should be far enough from all the narrow-minded northern prejudice, or better still, just go abroad for a couple of years until the fuss dies down. Either way, Manchester or Newcastle are too close to home.

And Newcastle are shit.

"narrow-minded northern prejudice"

How's that for some delicious unintentional irony?

I don't know quite how to respond to this but here goes...

I'm a Newcastle United supporter, but, firstly, i'm not really sure what the thinking is behind us bidding £20 Million plus for Wayne Rooney anyway. He's a brilliant talent, without a shadow of a doubt, but we're crying out for a centre half and the money would be much better spent by us in strengthening our team in the areas where we desperately need it. Although it would create a massive buzz up here if he came (something which we definitely need at the mo!!!) i'm pretty certain he will go to Man U.

I don't think you need to worry too much about Rooney making the wrong career move though, because I'm sure he's got very well paid advisors helping him make the right choices.

It was a bit different with Shearer however. Although i'm not denying what he could have won, if he had moved elsewhere after Blackburn, he showed a bit of integrity (which is quite rare in footy these days) when he came to Newcastle at what was his prime, in my opinion, and he's given no indication of ever regretting it. I wouldn't call it lack of ambition because who knows how things are going to turn out. Plus, Newcastle are not an unambitious club (and that's proven alone by the fact that we are willing to bid £20 million plus for Rooney) it's just that we haven't quite managed to get things right YET!!! Shearer's very special to the fans up here and I think he knows that he would never have been idolised in the same way, at any other club. Plus he's going to be Newcastle manager of course!!!

I don't think Alan wasted his career and I personally think he was right to quit the England squad whilst at the top and, again, showed how true he is to his word by not going back on his decision. Plus, I think his goal scoring record speaks for itself so his career's been anything but wasted and he's never had anything to prove.

The Newcastle fans are fantastic. I know i'm hardly neutral, but I think it's proven by the fact that they turn out in their droves week in and week out, despite having nothing to show for it, and the atmosphere inside St James' Park is absolutely electric. Football is pretty much all people talk about up here and this place is going to erupt if, and when, we eventually win something.

Finally, Newcastle is a brilliant city to live in and is anything but a dump. You've obviously had some kind of bad experience to be so negative about the place, otherwise I don't know why you would react so strongly.

Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion and I guess we'll find out in the next few days what will happen on the Rooney front.

I really feel it for the Everton fans though!!

Julie, I agree that saying Newcastle United are unambitious is incorrect; unambitious is the wrong word, but they are certainly major under-achievers.

But I totally disagree with you about Alan Shearer, the bloke could have had a shelf in his house full of League, FA Cup, Champions League medals if he'd signed for Manchester United back in 1996. I could have even understood his decision to go to Newcastle if they had, say, won the FA or League Cup the previous season, but the fact remains: "The Toon Army" had won nada, zip, zilch in years before Shearer decided to go there, & they've won diddly-squat since, so yes, Alan totally wasted his career at a club that can't win anything for toffee, & I stand by that, & I stand by thinking Shearer is an arsehole for not asking for a move to a bigger, better club after a couple of seasons at Newcastle.

Apologies for calling Newcastle a dump though, the city itself isn't too bad, I was thinking more about the football club itself again. Much nicer place to be than the cesspit that is Manchester, though if you're a multi-million pound rated football player, you'd be better off going to England's capital of drugs, guns & rain than Geordieland. If Rooney ends up at Old Trafford, maybe he should commute...

Man Utd have upped their offer to £25 million today. £25 million for a kid who had a good Euro 2004,but only managed 4 goals last season? I hope we dont sign him,it`ll be another fuckin Veron all over again. I cant belive the price Everton want for him-for an extra £5 million we could buy the whole fuckin club outright!

What the heck is Manchester United gonna do with four strikers? There's no point in purchasing Rooney when you already have Smith, van Nistelrooy and Saha. Man Yoo need a quality midfielder, far more than another striker.

Not a bad forward line now though. Smith is looking better than he has ever looked in his career (though he still looked way below International standard in that showing against Ukraine), and is scoring goals. Saha impresses me with his touch and movement. We all know Van Pistol will score goals for fun. Rooney will create a lot by doing the unexpected from out deep, I can see him playing in behind one striker, a position that Fergie likes to use but one that United have never really made the most of since Edward Sheringham moved on. Scholes can't really play there, he's more effective in a flat middle 4. They may be a challenge to Chelsea and the seemingly unstoppable Arse after all. Can't see anyone else getting remotely close though, even after 4 games.

Since they were inevitably going to lose him anyway, I think Everton have done really well in holding out for the deal they got. Whoever negotiated that did well, I would say.

I'm glad that he went to Man U in the end though, not because I don't think he's an excellent player (although i'm not sure he's worth the rumoured price of £27 Million in total), but because we really couldn't afford to have him here at Newcastle, not when we are crying out for one, in fact two, quality centre halves. I could think of loads of better ways for us to spend that sort of money.

Having said that, the transfers windows closed without us having signed a single player and we're managerless to boot (the joys of being a NUFC supporter!!).

Seriously, shoddy treatment of Sir Bobby though. He didn't deserve that but the writing was on the wall when he was told this would be his last season. It put him in the unenviable position of having to manage the club without being able to make long term plans. I really don't think he had any real input in to either the Woodgate sale or the Rooney bid with both, I believe, being down to Freddy Shepherd who keeps getting his fist in to things which are ultimately the managers responsibility. So now, whoever comes, is going to have to make do with the players we've got here.

Ah well, another joyfull season methinks!!!

I think the way Freddie Shepherd has treated Sir Bobby has been nothing short of a disgrace. Having said that, Shepherd & the word "disgrace" go hand in glove, don't they?

I saw on Sky Sports News that a Newcastle newspaper ran a poll to see who the fans would like to see become the new manager. Apparantly Martin O'Neill won the poll, & I'd like to see him somewhere like Newcastle. He's achieved everything he set out to do & more besides at Celtic, & must be bored now doing the same old thing in the Scottish Pointless League. O'Neill would be a good choice for Toon boss, better than underachievers like Steve McClaren, that's for sure.

The bookies favourite for the NUFC job is Terry Venables, but WHY? What has El Tel achieved in his last two or three managerial jobs? Bugger all, that's what. Venables was a reasonably decent manager 10/15 years ago for England & Spurs but that's almost a different era ago now. Still, if Fartin' Freddie has his heart set on Tel, then to hell with what the Newcastle fans want, eh? (Venables only scored 4% in that newspaper poll) Terry is a great TV pundit & a likeable personality, but he should stay out of the managerial game now, he just can't cut the mustard alongside guys like Wenger, Ferguson & O'Neill.

Just another point on the Rooney saga: I believe he is worth £27 million. I'll be the first to admit he could have done better last season, but people tend to ignore the fact that he's still only 18, & will get a lot better than he is now over the next few years. Man Utd paying that money for him is actually a good investment; they could probably sell him for £35-40 million when he's about 23/24 to somewhere like Real Madrid.

I think a lot of the Rooney bashing is unjustified, I think it's mainly a bunch of Scousers who believe he's now Judas Iscariot Mark II just for wanting to better himself, but on the other hand, he is not the wonderkid the media portrays him as, as great as he is, he could be a lot better & no doubt will be as the seasons go by, & he gets older & more mature playing for a club that is challenging for the Premiership & playing in Europe every season...

Freddie's an arse and I've got no faith what so ever in him!! Martin O'Neill would definitely be my choice, and he came out top in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle poll, but there's no way he'll be prized away from Celtic and I can't really say I blame him.

Terry Venables has been denied, but we'll wait and see. Apparently they will have something in place by Monday, when there will be an announcement to the share holders, so should find out soon enough. The talk up here is that it's probably going to be Steve Bruce or David O'Leary, because Shepherd said something about legal wrangles which suggests that it's someone who is already tied to a club, but i'm not all that fussed on either to be honest. Shearers distanced himself from it, and rightly so, because it's too soon for him and he wants to concentrate on his game in his last season.

Glenn Hoddle has also apparently thrown his hat in and made his availability clear (I definitely don't want to go there) so the circus continues.

We may as well have left Bobby in for the rest of the season since they obviously had no idea of who they wanted to replace him, instead of treating him like crap!!

In terms of Rooney, I certainly wasn't 'Rooney Bashing'. I do think he is a excellent buy for Man U but I think £27 million is a lot considering Beckam moved to Madrid for about £25 million and Owen for much less than half. Also I think it will be a lot of pressure on him to live up to such a large fee. It's all happened really quickly for him when you think about it.

Man United have offered Sir Clive Woodward a coaching job to teach Rooney how to deal with hookers.

Wayne Rooney at £27 million represents good value for money, as he's only 18 & Man Utd could probably make a tidy profit on him if they decide to sell him in the future.

Beckham wasn't worth any more than £25 million or so because he was pushing 30 years old when he signed for Madrid, & Michael Owen only cost about £8 million because his Liverpool contract was up in the summer & then he could have just left for nothing. Owen is worth at least triple what Real paid for him, but such are the consequences of the Bosman Ruling...

They would have to get over £35m to make any profit at all on him, as Everton will receive 25% of any sell on fee.

There seems to be a bit of confusion over the 25% going to Everton should Rooney be sold. I understand it to be 25% of any profit that United make on him, not 25% of whatever amount he's sold for.
