Who wants to start the bets on how long it'll take for the Repubs to be at the center of a riot?

I hope to god they don't use 9/11...but you gotta think, being in New York automatically precludes them using it for their gain. Sick bastards

Anyway, a healthy democracy needs debate and dissent, both which the Bushies are trying to get rid of. Let's hope NYC shows its true colors to the jerks hiding out in Madison Square Garden

Well I believe the whole point they chose NY as the site for the RNC was because of 9/11. Cheney in a recent speech in NY talked about the Twin Towers not being up in the NY skyline anymore, blah blah blah...

Anyways, the Repubs have chosen the most telegenic people in Giulani, Schwarzenneger, and McCain to speak at the convention. Cheney will be the biggest policy speaker at the convention no doubt. The protesters in NY are confined to a small area just like they were for the DNC in Boston.

Just saw the demonstration on the news, 100,000 people turned up including Michael Moore, there was no rioting (not with 12,000 cops watching their every move), although somebody started a fire.

100,000 is the cops number. 250,000 is the organisers number. A general rule for protests:

[(cops number)+(organisers number)] / 2

= real number

So I reckon around 175,000

This isn’t a great number considering the size of the city -if the RNC was in Dublin; I reckon we could pull out more onto the streets.

The pope is right – non violent action is worthless. Generally what happens is a load of hippies decide nobody will have any fun (except the cops) tell everyone to be peaceful (and a crowd of around 175,000 is generally peaceful) then the cops lay into a few on the fringes, everyone gets pissed off, the cops arrest a predefined number (say 100) for the news reports, and the protest is said to be “violent”.

You may as well go in for the kill with a crowd that size, and actively confront the cops.

I don’t know who I have less time for : crusties, hippies, or cops.

Most NYC cops are redneck, Irish, racist, homophobes I hear. Most Irish cops are.................too

I agree 175,000 is a miniscule number for a protest in New York. For Kerry's sake, I hope the protests remain peaceful, for I believe anything rash and idiotic would truly have an adverse effect on the undecided of America, who probably tend not to be of the same young, liberal demographic of the protestors. If the undecided become scared, then they may vote for Bush. For all I care, I hope for Bush that the protestors go break things and loot.

Never been part of a protest movement like that before, and I might never be again. Oh, and for the record, I learned on that particular day that tear gas is not at all comfortable.

Attacks on what? The IRA have basically disbanded, and have to an extent decommissioned. The Continuity- and Real-IRA may still exist but they also do feck all.

And they also don't go attacking people thousands and thousands of miles away, unlike the US

Oh, and you'll also note that *all* the currently even semi active IRA members are from Northern Ireland. And are hence subjects of the United Kingdom. Not Irish.

In the last fifty years there has been the Korean War, Vietnam, Grenada, Chile, Lebanon, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Haiti, etc. Now were all these incidents our faults, not at all. The US did many shady things during the Cold War (Allende, the Sandanistas, etc.) But considering all of this, does it still come anywhere close to Soviet, Chinese, and ethnic cleansings in Rwanda? Be realistic, the US has done many things in the interest of peace, but only if there was an underlying economic interest. The US has been the strongest superpower these past fifty years, and us having to deal with many military conflicts was to be expected. If you wish for no more war in the world, then you are plain mistaken.

Yes, it was quite exciting. We made the mistake of branching off from the major march route and ended up at an intersection (4th and Union) barricaded by riot cops. I suppose we should've guessed that things wouldn't be all that peaceful since we were right next to the Wobblies from the IWW, and they certainly don't have a history of nonviolence (especially in the local area where there was a massacre of them on the Everett docks back in the early 20th century). Anyway, cops started wading into the crowd and pepper-spraying people or beating them over the head a few times, prompting everyone to sit down until the cops cleared off. But that didn't last long and then everyone got REALLY nervous and started putting on gas masks; I managed to tear a strip of clear plastic from some debris nearby and wrap it around my eyes. Then they launched one of those concussion grenades into the crowd which went off about 10 feet away from me and my friends (we were about 15 feet back from the line of cops). Then everyone started screaming and running like mad, so we blindly made a human chain and ran back a block as tear gas started seeping up. I have a photo we took from a block away, right after it happened (and seconds before another volley of concussion grenades encouraged us to move on)--but I don't know how to use my roommate's scanner. Needless to say, we were VERY furious at the police, but I suppose what they did was inevitable and we were just waiting for it. Still, I feel that the violence of the day made it more of an international event than it would have otherwise been, so in that respect, I suppose it was a good thing. Huge protests seem to happen around the world all the time, but one hardly ever hears about them--so hopefully people took notice and tried to see what all the fuss was about.
