BTW, out of curiousity, why does the US still carry the 2 terms rules for the president? Seriously, it's stupid to see some good guys leave because of that rule, isn't it? Notice that in Canada, it usually alternates naturally after 2 terms, except when the opposition has problems like it has now, but still.

I guess Clinton would still be president and would probably go for a 4th term as we speak...

Nicos, there was no term limit until after FDR did his 4 term thing. It was a tradition, started by George Washington, to serve no more than two terms. If I recall correctly, he didn't want any man staying in office too long, to avoid the comparison to being King. It might keep capable people out, but, by the same token, it may keep idiots from staying around too long!

Not going to happen. Virtually every civilised country in the world has a two-term limit on President. We do here because if we didn't DeValera would have stayed in till he died. That said, he did die almost directly after leaving office..

And our president isn't even important - they have no powers. Its too dangerous to let the same person rig more than two elections, as Bush would to stay in.

What I will never understand about the US is why minor social issues like gay marriage assume such huge electoral importance. How many openly gay people does the average working class Kansas guy actually know? Is it that Fox News has left Joe Sixpack with the impression that gay marriage is going to be made compulsory if the Dems get in?

(And why don't the Dems just let Southerners have their guns if they are so important to them? Is it really worth losing votes over? Guns don't kill people, poverty does!)

But I do wonder how far Colin Powell or Condeleeza Rice would have gotten if they'd had the same troubles with the English language. The same guys who defend Bush's 'folksy' speech always seem to turn into defenders of rigorous academic standards when it comes to people speaking non-standard English who aren't white or rich (see 'ebonics' or affirmative action arguments).

I meant pro-rich-and-educated-voters not pro-rich-and-educated-candidates! The candidates are always rich, its a mandatory requirement of having a hope of the Presidency. And I don't feel any enthusiasm about Kerry (good job I'm not a US voter) I doubt his being elected would make a lot of difference to anything, except perhaps in terms of who gets appointed to the Supreme Court.
