Really? Good call! What were you playing? I always end up to pished in Vegas to make any money. Been three times in the last couple of years and never did any better than (just about) break even. I'm usually to be found at 4AM in some low limit, last chance saloon like The Boardwalk trying to claw back my losses with those big silver dollar chips!

I only ever play blackjack which I'm more than competent at. Know my multiple deck strategy chart off by heart! Me and a mate started practicing counting which is relatively easy when it's the two off you sitting in the house with a few beers. Any time we've tried it out at the loacl Gala though it's a different matter. It undoubtedly works but unless you've got a really slow dealer or the ability to do maths at breakneck speed (while counting Aces with your feet!) it's tough to say the least.

I'll master it one day though.

The only casino I've done was on the boat to Amsterdam for the Ajax game a couple of year back. Wheel Roulette.....I just kept gambling on Red and Black, won a good £50.....which was nice:D

Can you imagine the people these casino's would attract though, people with their UB40's as an IOU:evil4:

Grahame you use Basic Strategy with a + / - count and side count of Aces?

Do you also ace locate?

52% edge if you start with an ace

None of the afore-mentioned. I won the lot on slots. Picked up 600 dollars on day one off a quarter (2400-1 shot) then played two dollar games from then on. Biggest win was 960 dollars. Played the 10 dollar machines and doubled up on the last day. Believe you me, sticking 20 dollars in a machine and spinning that wheel is more electrifying than sex. Fucking gets the heart going. I blew 200 dollars in the time a mate of mine took to take a piss, but then picked up 800 dollars off the next spin. Not good for the ticker.

Was over in Vegas for the world poker championships. All the stars where there - Affleck, Ed Norton, etc. Two mates of mine are serious gamblers and one of them's going full-time after being made redundant from his job in Sweden. He is up A LOT of money playing internet poker part-time as it is. Few people here know him cos he did a lot of New Order with me back in the day and did Stockholm with me too on the last tour.

The only thing I chanced in Vegas was the Blackjack and I got caned off that. Fcuk knows how, it ain't the hardest game in the world, but had no joy so swerved after a couple of days.

Just wondering if you are ruining Gala's profits

There are plenty of casinos in Britain relative to its size. I dont know the details of the new proposals but certainly a relaxing of the laws a couple of jumbo casinos and foreign operators may liven up the industry. Staffing will be a headache though, have to be a major upgrade in salaries (acceptance of tips?) you might even get a smile from the dealers it is the service industry after all.

Basically it's a multiple deck "true count" strategy. A slight variation on the basic +/- scheme. I side count aces with my foot (or at least I try to!). Learned from a book by a guy called Silberstang. Bought it in Vegas on my first visit and left it behind in my room in Bally's the last time I visited!!!

Tried to get it over here but I can't remember the book's title, just the surname of the author. Drew a blank at Dillon's. Should "Google" it I suppose, probably available mail order.

As I said though you really need to dedicate a whole load of time to practicing regularly. On the odd time that I've tried it and got a really slow dealer it's worked though which really motivates you top keep practicing!

And I trust this is all in confidence Digital Mike?!!

You could ask James Thomas. Or I'm either a punter or in the business. Long term I always walk out winning. House edge therefore suggests the latter. To answer the previous post, I don't think I know you but I've probably seen you. Also long term Order fan we must have at least a few gigs in common Glastonbury 87 is one for sure.

I always loose in casinos. The only times I win is when I'm too pissesd to know what I'm doing' playing blackjack and can't even see my own cards. Hence I normaly stay out of them.

By the way in the last decade or so almost ever major city in Oz now has a casio, and the state goverments have become increasingly dependant on the tax revenue generated by them. It hasn't done much for society though with especially the poor spnding their dole cheques in the casinos.

Crime has also increased markendly. It seems that almost every week someone is convicted for embezzling major amounts of money so they can spend it on gambling.

So for me the answer is no.

Unfortunately in the UK there are a multitude of other outlets for the public to part with their cash. Casinos for a long time were restricted by stringent laws.It has long been a source of irritation for casinos in the UK and the recent relaxation and proposed deregulation is only levelling the playing field. In addition I dont agree with a nanny state.

We also have other gaming/ gambling outlets. The biggest gambling problem in Oz is the poker machine In the past in large parts of Australia poker machines were restricted to clubs. In the last few years they have also spread to pubs. Many of which seem to be nothing but gambling dens these days. Not a nice place for a nice relaxing beer or two or three.

What I don't understand is why a casino is supposed to help 'regenerate' an area, while a crack den is considered bad. What's the difference? Both are feeding peoples' addictions while sucking money from them.

I rather liked Las Vegas when I was there (spent only £20 in 3 days, including food, what a tight bastard I am), but that's because its a special resort that folk go to from all over, I doubt the places that will spring up after this bill will have trapeze artists and white tigers etc.

I just wonder why the government is doing this now, its not as if there's any great demand for it. Its more grist for my Mad Conspiracy Theory (TM) that Tony is being blackmailed by the US government. Either that or he's just an arse.

I think the general perception is deregulation will turn the UK into one giant casino. This is misguided at best. It will eradicate the arcane laws that govern the licensing of casinos and create an opportunity for more and bigger casinos. Don't be fooled, those who propose to open giant operations won't just throw a wad of cash at the first available site in the hope that business will be forthcoming. Ultimately the result should be a general upgrading of the quality of the casinos more facilities and more variation in the available games. Quite possibly some of the long standing provincial clubs will close down due to a jumbo operation opening relatively near to them, perhaps not a bad thing if memory serves. It will also open up the world of casinos to the vast majority who lost interest once they understood membership was required and a 24 hour cooling off period before gaming could begin(in my day 48 hours!)Laws will not be waived or flaunted casinos generate business if only through recycling the black economy back in to the system (laundering?) not really but people with excess cash on their hands do like a punt, easy come easy go.Don't think crack houses provide jobs or pay taxes unless there has been a major change over there.Or Tony could just be an Arse!

As much as it can be fun to have the odd flutter, unfortunately gambling seems to a large degree have become just another tax on those wh can least afford it. Governments are increasingly reliant on the taxes it generates. However there is a bit of a backlash occurring here. In South Australia there is a memeber of parliament whose party is the Anti Pokies Party. State Government have started to curb the number of Poker Machines.

I can only hope for Mike that there isn't too much more legal gambling in the UK, otherwise there may be a backlash there as well, and the end result may actually be less gamling venues and less employment in that industry.

Gambling is on ever street corner(and thanks to the internet in virtually every home).God knows how many Pubs in the UK but almost all have slot machines, upwards of 8000 bookmakers I believe, the omnipresent lottery and 130+ casinos. Perhaps then it is understandable then why casino operators want freer access to the marketplace. A casino environment is not for everyone but the major complaint were the severe restrictions in place. When I started casinos were not allowed to advertise, tout for business, strict membership policy no alcohol or live music on the gaming floor. All this in place and it's a bloody wonder they survived.Casinos are not exclusively the world of James Bond, tuxedos and Baccarat or Capone, the Krays hookers and guns. It can be a great night out if someone has an addictive personality then they will find their addiction be it drugs, gambling, alcohol, women or spending ridiculous amounts of time and money on a pop group.
