I always loose in casinos. The only times I win is when I'm too pissesd to know what I'm doing' playing blackjack and can't even see my own cards. Hence I normaly stay out of them.
By the way in the last decade or so almost ever major city in Oz now has a casio, and the state goverments have become increasingly dependant on the tax revenue generated by them. It hasn't done much for society though with especially the poor spnding their dole cheques in the casinos.
Crime has also increased markendly. It seems that almost every week someone is convicted for embezzling major amounts of money so they can spend it on gambling.
So for me the answer is no.

We also have other gaming/ gambling outlets. The biggest gambling problem in Oz is the poker machine In the past in large parts of Australia poker machines were restricted to clubs. In the last few years they have also spread to pubs. Many of which seem to be nothing but gambling dens these days. Not a nice place for a nice relaxing beer or two or three.

What I don't understand is why a casino is supposed to help 'regenerate' an area, while a crack den is considered bad. What's the difference? Both are feeding peoples' addictions while sucking money from them.
I rather liked Las Vegas when I was there (spent only £20 in 3 days, including food, what a tight bastard I am), but that's because its a special resort that folk go to from all over, I doubt the places that will spring up after this bill will have trapeze artists and white tigers etc.
I just wonder why the government is doing this now, its not as if there's any great demand for it. Its more grist for my Mad Conspiracy Theory (TM) that Tony is being blackmailed by the US government. Either that or he's just an arse.
I think the general perception is deregulation will turn the UK into one giant casino. This is misguided at best. It will eradicate the arcane laws that govern the licensing of casinos and create an opportunity for more and bigger casinos. Don't be fooled, those who propose to open giant operations won't just throw a wad of cash at the first available site in the hope that business will be forthcoming. Ultimately the result should be a general upgrading of the quality of the casinos more facilities and more variation in the available games. Quite possibly some of the long standing provincial clubs will close down due to a jumbo operation opening relatively near to them, perhaps not a bad thing if memory serves. It will also open up the world of casinos to the vast majority who lost interest once they understood membership was required and a 24 hour cooling off period before gaming could begin(in my day 48 hours!)Laws will not be waived or flaunted casinos generate business if only through recycling the black economy back in to the system (laundering?) not really but people with excess cash on their hands do like a punt,easy come easy go.Don't think crack houses provide jobs or pay taxes unless there has been a major change over there.Or Tony could just be an Arse!

As much as it can be fun to have the odd flutter, unfortunately gambling seems to a large degree have become just another tax on those wh can least afford it. Governments are increasingly reliant on the taxes it generates. However there is a bit of a backlash occurring here. In South Australia there is a memeber of parliament whose party is the Anti Pokies Party. State Government have started to curb the number of Poker Machines.
I can only hope for Mike that there isn't too much more legal gambling in the UK, otherwise there may be a backlash there as well, and the end result may actually be less gamling venues and less employment in that industry.
Gambling is on ever street corner(and thanks to the internet in virtually every home).God knows how many Pubs in the UK but almost all have slot machines, upwards of 8000 bookmakers I believe,the omnipresent lottery and 130+ casinos. Perhaps then it is understandable then why casino operators want freer access to the marketplace. A casino environment is not for everyone but the major complaint were the severe restrictions in place.When I started casinos were not allowed to advertise, tout for business, strict membership policy no alcohol or live music on the gaming floor. All this in place and it's a bloody wonder they survived.Casinos are not exclusively the world of James Bond, tuxedos and Baccarat or Capone, the Krays hookers and guns. It can be a great night out if someone has an addictive personality then they will find their addiction be it drugs, gambling, alcohol,women or spending ridiculous amounts of time and money on a pop group.
