The Mission U.K. appreciation thread!

This is probably a waste of time since I seriously doubt any of you guys have heard of this underrated hard rock band before. They're called The Mission U.K. and they are simply one of my favorite hard rock bands of all fucking time! Everyone should go out and buy the following albums NOW!!!

These two albums are MASTERPIECES!!! I'm talking perfection here! Think Sisters of Mercy, Alice in Chains, and a dash of Stone Temple Pilots all mixed in one and taken to the NEXT LEVEL! They're that good! The Mission U.K. takes a giant shit on all these new crappy rock bands like Greenday, Good Charlottle, and the Offspring. They have a sound all their own and do a great job of getting the music heavy without it sounding clustered and messy!

The Mission? Wayne Hussey? From the late 80's? Dull as ditchwater Goth nonsense? No, never heard of them...

I remember leaving Reading 89 early specifically to avoid having to see them. No mean feat as the car was in the middle of the campsite. Managed to manouver a way through the mess and only hit one tent-peg.

Funny how things change over time. Back in the day, when Eldritch threw the toys out the pram once too often and Wayne and Lurch went off on a Mission impossible, I really resented The Mission as being in some way responsible for the end of the Sisters. Hussey was a joke as a front man in a live setting, he was seemingly trying to out-Eldritch Eldritch. Some of the songs were great, but the pose was just not what I was looking for.

Listening to some 1984 Sisters demos again recently, which included Hussey singing songs later released by Eldritch, as well as songs that later became Mission standards, it made me realise that yes they had actually been quite good. Listened to a couple of bootlegs as well, I can put up with them now.

Wouldn't say they were quite as good as Pingu or whatever his name is wants us to believe though!

First thing, are you actually for real here? Second, they are called The Mission where they come from. Third, if they are "hard rock", you need to get out a bit more. Fookin' nancy namby-pamby goths is what they are. Sisters of Mercy eh? Strange. Two of them used to be in the Sisters. At the same time. You can assess for yourself who was in the front door and who was in the back way. Green Day are a new rock band? May I respectfully suggest (and I do mean respectfully) that you purchase a new stylus post haste if you in any way correlate the sounds of Green Day and The Mission (Leeds, UK). That's like comparing The Beatles to The Fall.

my (ex) wife was a massive fan, i actually had to go & see them at the same venue that wayne hussey saw his first concert (pink floyd he said it was).

Remember seeing The Mission in 1987. Didn't go to see them of course but the support Leed's finest, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. Unfortunately got slaughtered beforehand and missed all but the Lorries set bar the last three songs.

The Mission set was alright to be fair.

Remember seeing Hussey on the James Whale Show. Pished out his brains, constantly swearing and pissing about. Whale had to physically throw him out of the studio. Funny as fook.

For me that was the Mission's one redeeming feature: they had this ridiculously portentuous goth image when really they were just a bunch of pissheads from Leeds who'd have been better suited to being lairy on the terraces at Elland Road than the Dark Gods of Goth they so clearly wanted to be.

I remember someone telling me about the carnage at their Brum NEC sho around 1989 when they were at the peak of their popularity. The fans trashed the place, resulting in a virtual ban on alcohol in the NEC fore the next few years (ie: only a few bars with massively overpiced beer, resulting in it being nigh-on impossible to get pissed....)

I'd never heard of anything of the US bands of the Mission or the Charlatans, but the (US ) Beat did have a record out on CBS before the (UK) Beat's records appeared, they were a decent power-pop outfit.

Could never tell the difference between The Mission and Sisters Of Mercy, all I know is that Patricia Morrison was in one of 'em at one time. As for Leeds' finest, well that would have to be either Gang Of Four or Mekons.

An appreciation , Wayne Hussey defied both the laws of nature and Darwinism by managing to get further up his own arse than would seem physicaly possible , furthermore he managed this in record time and with a fair bit of entertainment value thrown in

I honestly feel like I'm the 4th grader and you guys are the 12th grade seniors giving me the rough scrubbing across my head

But anyway, I won't even begin to try and debate any of the things you guys said about Wayne Hussey's personal life and what he wants or doesn't want to try to be. I mean afterall, I'm a 31yr old black dude living in Los Angeles who grew up discovering bands such as these off KROQ radio while you guys were more or less THERE, living it...if you get my drift. Hence why you know so much trivia about these UK bands. Leeds? Never even heard of it? Is it in London? *shrug*

Anyway for the record, yes I was being serious and I really do enjoy their music. But I must admit I hav not heard any Sisters of Mercy material and want to pick up their early stuff. I realize you guys have listened to every British rock band that's ever existed and will welcome you schooling me on what's good and what's shit. BUT....you must admit that your points being made in this thread are more or less personal attacks on The Mission's lead singer. Instead, I would like you tell me what it is you don't like about their MUSIC. Not about Wayne. I find it rather strange that seemingly no one here likes songs like Tower Strength, Butterfly on a Wheel, Beyond the Pale, Deliverance, and Belief. Everyone's taste is subjective, but I'd really like to know how anyone can sit down, listen to those tracks and called them garbage. Or for that matter....anything but brilliant.

Now...that being said, I want to reiterate what I said earlier....I'm an L.A. native and probably one of the few Americans here on this forum obssesed with British rock/pop/alternaitve. I grew up on the genre listening only to KROQ. Therefore, while I did discover quite a few great bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, theThe, etc, It's only natural that my exposure to great British music is nowhere near as enormous as you guys who have posted in this thread.

Being that you're Brits, I would like you to recommend some bands other than The Mission but with a similiar sound or even bands you feel shit all over them. I welcome recommendations of excellent British rock bands with open arms. Hell, I haven't even gotten around to buying any Radio Head albums yet. And I still need to pick up shit from The Pixies.

So anyway I just wanted to clear why my pick for an appreciation thread belonged to The Mission. I enjoy the music but again, I can certainly understand why I'm being laughed at in here and it's simply due to the fact that I have not had the exposure to the bands YOU think are better because none of my friends listen to this type of music and I stopped listening to radio 7 years ago when Richard Blade resigned from KR0Q. Everything on LA radio went to shit after he left. :(

Butterfly wheel and Deliverance , tap me feet to them if they come on the radio , that said never a big fan of the Mission , fields of the Nephhillim et al ...but if nothing else was on and they were in town , well a few beers and a smoke and a good night was guaranteed , same for Sisters of M.... but goth type stuff , Bauhaus was as near as I got, sadly just as Pete Murphy was becomin a Bowie for the 80's , they covered Ziggy and became the Bowie of the 70's , so I left them alone .

Pete Murphy solo work though is top notch , Last Two Weeks is superb

Well, as long as we're tapping into Brit knowledge here, does anybody remember/have anything to say about Rings' I Wanna Be Free, from Chiswick's Longshots, Dead Certs, and Odds on Favourites?

Like Mr Mac, I never got the Goth thing. To me it was just incredibly uncool... Didn't like the image, so never really payed attention to the music. Maybe that makes me shallow.

Having said that, Temple Of Love by the Sisters is a fucking great song.

I never made it onto the Goth appreciation, again hated the image and hence tried to steer clear of the music, though that was difficult in the Leeds area 20 years ago! This is perhaps one of anumber of good reasons why there is such a loathing of the Cure as they flirted with the image and were certainly championed by that lot. But Sisters of Mercy stand out head and shoulders in that genre, like it or not. I got over my distaste of goths for a night and went to see SoM at a reunion gig about 10 years ago. Bloody impresive they were!

As for other music, you appear to have a taste for 80's and early nineties so I would try get compilations of a few labels - Factory (obviously), 4AD (cocteaus, Modern English, Pixies) and dare I say Mute? Other bands you may like(as with Pixies not strictly UK) Echo & the Bunnymen, Spear of Destiny/Theatre of Hate, Jesus & Mary Chain, Pulp, The Shamen, EMF, Stone Roses, ...

Finally back to Leeds, seeing the Mekons mentioned has anyone seen the Chuck Death cartoon book featuring 'Spiggy Eldritch' and many others - an excellent read. Last, The Wedding Present are surely Leeds' finest?

I liked it when Tony James joined the Sisters and they temporarily became a soft metal Sigue Sigue Sputnik tribute act....

Never much cared for Goth bands, too much associated with rich art student types. Had a friend who went out with a posh Goth girl, he ended up stealing from his employer to try and keep up with her spending habits, got in a lot of trouble.

Was funny to read Rob Smith in an interview recently desperately insisting the Cure were never Goths (I never percieved them as such at the time...but maybe he protests too much?). But I do like 'This Corrosion'. Was that the Mission or Sisters of Mercy?

Reading this thread made me realise how fucking lucky I was to be born in England and have the chance to see and hear a lot of great and not so great bands first hand. The sheer vastness of the states does not lend itself to the type of gig going some here indulged in in the eighties. Never a goth, can take or leave the mission early Sisters were better. JT was right avoiding Goth in the Leeds area(suburbs of London, american friends) 20 years ago was bloody impossible. JT two words, Xclusive batley , sure you had your dancing shoes on at least once for Temple of Love. There's been a lot worse bands touted on this site, stick with it Isamu oh and try the Psychedelic Furs.

and anytime you see 'UK' or 'london' before or after a band's name, please disregard it as it's the american record label's doing (because there once was an american band of the same name so they have to add the extra bit for legal reasons). as for the mission, my ex-flatmate in london dated wayne hussey back in the '80s...when she was 15 and he was in his 30s! she was a proto-goth in those days--now she's married with 3 kids, living in south london, and listening to R&B!

1. she was an, erm, precocious teenager, shall we say. she ran away from home in croatia at 14 to live with her older sister in london, so she was worldlier than most 15-year-olds.

Mate, please stop refering to them as Mission UK, it makes them sound like a foreign branch of some odd company. Nobody here is remotely aware of the existence of "The Mission, incestville".

Gotta say the Roses are better, I can vaguely remember liking one mission tune, but don't even know it's name, but I like a fair few stone roses tracks. Sort of comparing apples and oranges though. Definitely prefered the Sisters, This Corrosion is a masterwork, but I bet I'd cringe and not turn it up to New Order volume if I played it now.

Funny, in my school/social circles, the pretentious wankers who discovered and subsequently worshiped, and subsubsequently pretended they'd never heard of The Mission, were previously (and in many cases, concurrently and ongoingly) into another band.

Anyone care to guess?

Confession to make. Heard the radio the other week and two rather familiar songs came on "Wishing Well" and "Dream On". Neither of them were being sung by Wayne Hussey. I had to look up on tinternet to find out that they were probably the Gary Moore and Aeorsmith originals, that I had never heard, and hadn't realised The Mission hadn't written them!

The Smiths. Goth Well I never wish I'd known. As for The Sof Mercy. FAL and Always Was w/ a Running Club way back.. the Guys were well into 'em. Trails and the mud yet remained fairly clueless. Didn't realize 1/2 of it. Ten minute break. Has his voice has stood the Test of Time. T of Love.
