Ratzinger. The ex-Nazi.

Out of curiousity, how will he be named in English?

Ben 16? :D

It's Benoît XVI in french, but I'm curious to know in english!

No David has retired, for he has been dismayed by the late pope's passing, but I will be taking over for Pope Benedict XVI (aka Pope Benedict Arnold). I will also be reinstating the Hitler Youth :D

So, Anthony Hopkins has been named pope?

Well... I didn't want to actually use the current libel, whereas we can prove he was in the Hilter Youth.

I'm glad I'm not a catholic. Don't have to revere the bastard.

That's a little bit odd. Couldn't they find a decent Italian? Or Italians can't do it anymore?

Anyway, Germany is half-Catholic and half-Protestant. A well-kwon fact. Yet the population of Germany actually is not as religious as that of Poland or Italy. It's a quite modern country.

Well, the previous pope beatified josemaria escriva, founder of opus dei, suspected anti-semite, fascist, and admirer of both Hitler and Franco - while it lasted anyhow.

This piece of scum could soon be a saint. Lovely.

How long will it take this pope to be shot? Sooner than later I hope.

Not my fault, I assure you.

On one hand, you can't really blame the guy for being in the Hitler Youth. After all, children were indoctrinated into the Nazi mindset from the very start and knew no better. Look at someone like Gunther Grass who spent his whole life trying to live down the shame of being part of the Nazi party by writing anti-Nazi novels.

On the other hand (the one I prefer), he was a fucking Hitler Youth and that doesn't look good on anyone's resume. Bad enough that the Catholics were complacent during Hitler's rise to power after they and the Communists were kicked out of government after the Reichstag fire. Good taste for the Church to roll over for Mussolini and do nothing to condemn the holocaust.

And people wonder where my anti-Catholic, anti-religious bent comes from.

Wait, Ratzinger the ultraconservative?

I knew they'd never choose South American

In Germany nobody would understand this discussion. If he would be a nazi, then he would have been in big trouble in Germany, because of German History.

All of the upset Catholics simply have to follow the historical example set by their predecessors.

From 1378 to 1409, there were TWO popes. And from 1409 to 1417 there were THREE popes. Can't all you Catholic discontents band together and create a schism and vote in another pope?

We Lutherans have it so much easier - just go to a different church if you don't like the man in charge. I guess the Reformation had some value. :D

during WWII, EVERYONE was in the hitler youth. one of my college professors grew up in hungary and was a member of the hitler youth despite hating the nazis. he described it as follows: if a young person wanted any hope of being successful, he or she had no choice but to join the hitler youth. it was cosmetic for many people.

of course, that doesn't mean that this guy wasn't a nazi. ;)

and i was sort of hoping for an african pope (you did mention robert mugabe...).

hey, maybe kids will now learn roman numerals again! 'cause they sure as hell don't know them now!

The whole Hitler Youth thing is irrelevant, really. The real problem is that an arch-conservative pope appointed arch-conservative cardinals, who selected-- surprise!!-- an arch-conservative cardinal to be the next pope. I just love how he maneuvered behind the scenes to get elected, and now is talking as if God chose him.

I'm really looking forward to hearing God's views on contraception, homosexuality, women in the church, the celibate priesthood, Galileo Galilei-- no wait, the last fossil dealt with that issue, nevermind; oral sex, extra-marital sex, sex with boys-- oops, sorry again, that's one area God apparently has no opinion on. My bad!

Anyway, REALLY looking forward to this papacy. Especially the next time I'm shagging my ex, because she'll be wearing her naughty catholic schoolgirl outfit just for the occasion. She promises there'll be a Brazilian under her uniform. :shades:

No, not one of our Brazilian NOOLers. :D

So its jawohl mein Papst.

I'm Lutheran, so this doesn't matter to me. The catholics will always have a pope, so I can't understand all this happiness and applause. Indeed the pope is dead long live the pope.

Anyway if you don't like this guy, he's 78, just wait a few years and you'll have a new one.

I am aware of that, and I was just kidding. I didn't think that if it was entirely in German and someone didn't know said language the joke would make any sense. Since "Jawohl" and "mein" are well-known even amongst strictly people that don't know German, I thought it might be a little funny to have "Pope" in there. Sorry if my attempt at humor failed!

Fuck the Hitler Youth. Were his parents members of the Party? As Blue said the point is not that he spent his childhood defending The Bunker from Soviet tanks, rather that Herr Ratzinberg is the former Grand Inquisitor and extremely conservative in his Catholism. Thus the Church will remain in the dark Ages--no birth control, no role for women, and a haven for child molestors because he will not allow priests to marry. Sure John Paull II shared the same view but he made an attempt to reach out and visit the people of the world, encouraged interfaith dialog and sought peace. Herr Ratz will sit on the throne and bitch that Catholics are sinners.

Is it really going to be any different? So what this guy is very conservative and against a whole lots of things which we consider normal. My daughter will be taking her first holy communion next Sunday, at the same time as the new pontiff is being inaugurated. The service will be lead by a WOMAN ! and life will just carry on as normal.

Yours faithfully, a non practising proddie

What does the Hitlerjugend have to do with the year 2005? It was a youth organization, created after Boy Scouts, 60 years ago. The only Hitlerjugend boy who tried to "follow" the Parteiprinzipien after WWII was the leader of National Democratic Party in West Germany in the late 60's (that's when this pro-nazi party had its little heyday), whose name I forgot. And it was not Realpolitik, gentlemen.

In the Communist East Germany there were "pioneers", another Boy Scout-like organization. And 90% of the population of former East Germany under the age of 60 have been members of that organization. Ha, a friend of mine told me once that they sang songs originally written for the Hitlerjugend, just some lyrics were changed. :)

Kardinal Ratzinger was liberal in the 7Os. Since his arrival in Rome 1981 he is conservative. He defind the catholic position of the pope. He made the rules and the pope was more representive. German catholics critized him for this rules. But now he will change, because now he is the representive and another one defines the vatican position.

Some people on here simply have too much time on their hands! The Pope's a Nazi? :nonono:

As has been stated he was in the Hitler Youth, and also stated you had no choice at that time. Time for people to grow up and get on with it instead of people reeling out failures of the Church from the past. In every faith there has been fundemental fuck ups somewhere along the line. Whilst I'm a lazy catholic and disagree with certain issues, I'm still proud of my upbringing and my beliefs, afterall I was the coolest alterboy that has ever been:D

Let's give the new Pope a chance, and have less of this self righteous garbage on MY forum.

It's always good to put a German in charge of anything important....yep, that worked out real well circa 1940-1945, eh? :p (I'm of German descent, so I can make that joke. A blitzkrieg on anyone who disagrees)

The whole Hitler Youth thing is "irrelevant", but what was interesting was the way one pontiff pundit put it on CNN: "a youthful indiscretion". I thought that was reserved for Dubya

Anyway, I don't think any of this matters in my life, I'm not Catholic or anything. But if he turns out to be a ripe asshole, I imagine a lot of bile will be directed his way. He's 78, anyway...how much longer can he rule?

Let's get back to something that really matters.....American Idol, for instance :p

Perhaps his experience in wartime Germany fills his heart for the need for peace. Few things are sadder than using children to operate anti-aircraft weapons. They had a picture of him back then in the paper today. Reminded me of the boy in Downfall.

Nah matey, my beliefs are kept to masel (most of the time) I've just been iritated by a lot of people telling me the Pope's a German / Nazi, afterall, the British Royal Family is built on German foundations :uhoh: I must be just about the only person on the board willing to give the new guy a chance. He was chosen because it's seen as moving on in the same direction as JP2, the guy's 78 and is supposed to be very clever. They usually opt for a shorter reign of Pope after such a long one. If he makes mistakes, then I'll be happy for everyone to come on here and moan, but until then people should give it a rest fer a while. I hate moderating religious / political threads!
